mmmmmm rrum the rUtnburg Gazette. THE past summer (1j47) has been a very remarkable one. Erequent and heavy min, followed by intense and long continued heat, had theellect, in tn.tirst place, to promote a rapi.l growth of succ ilntJ vegetation, mid in t ho second to produce a rapid decomposition of vegetable matter, giving rise to much uiina and spreading sickness, disease and death, in Lv"vjs which had heretofore been remarkable for their sulubrity. We are credibly informed, that whole meadows, on which the crass was unusually heavy, rotted to : he ground and was not lit to be cut. In Indiana and Illinois, thesdekness was so general, that there wa not enough w ell persons to attend upon the sick, whose sulli rings were prvtracted by a want ol proper remedies, as well as of good nursing. Much ol this sulh ring might have U en prevented, had every fa m :ly kept on luind a supply of medicines-suited to counteract the illi cts of tins miasma, w ith which the atmospliere at certain times is f urcharged. Ro.3. THl.S world has ever been the scene of the fircest struggles between Truth and error. No sooner does Truth propound an important theory, than error, with its legion of allies, seeks to arrest its progress. A inot illustrious instance ol this, was the opposition made to th; immortal Je.nner. His mas ter mind was le I, under Providence, to thediscovcry of Vaccination, by w hich that dreadful scourge, the small hmx, was robbed ol i tu terrors. He found that the nutter from pustules upon the udder ol a cow conl:ii!ied a principle wluvli would produce the nlmoft divine results lor which he had so patiently and anx ously sought. Oppo-i!on arose. Interested persons high in social rank and professional jiosit ion, ridiculed what they dared not deny! They asserted that many vaccinated iersons became covered with hair, and t cu e.xhiiuK tl horns t and a tail: and that 111 om case a chil l ran on all lours, bellowing like a bull. Cut ihe current was soon turned. The liri'ish Parliatneni voted him XiM) sterling ($100,000,) and tlu world aug bis prais'S. The same sii:it has come down to our own time.
