Elisiia Embree visited our city on yesterday on private business, and straight way it was determined by the Rough and Ready Club that he should address the citizens at Camp Taylor;' accordingly notice was given, and short though it was, the citizens turned out in large numbers and spacious as the 'camp' is it was well filled to hear this faithful Representative of the People, who, plain, modest, and honest as old Rough and Beidy himself, is just the man to gather arouud him the honest of all parties. We were rejoiced to see so large a number of the hard working, honest portion of the opposite party present last night, and we sincerely hope the exposition Judge Embree made of how matters are conducted at Washington by those whom the people have placed in office as their servants to do their WOrk, will serve to open their eyes to the gross corruption which is there practised a Corruption that overtops and swallows up every principle of honesty, and cheats the people of their rights and their liberties. Judge Embree well said that as at present conducted the people have but little if any voice in the Go-vernment-that the office-holders are tht Government, who conduct and controle affairs, not for the benefit of the people, for they never think ol the people, but to keep themselves in office and tobe able to dispense the spoils of office and money wrung from the working classes among themselves and their friends. Arid if the people fdil In November next to make a proper selection fur the Presidency this State of things mint an.l will grow worse. Cass is not the man to put there, for it is proved that wherever spoils arc found he is there hard .at work, and if he has talent for anything it is for getting an extra share. II; knows how to charge u pon Unt ie Sams Treasury if he knows nothing about charging his c ount ry'srtifmies. (ici). Taylor, on the other hand, has made no xlra charges of thi kind. His attacks have been made in fair fight against the enemies of his country, and against them alone, and a man who has been for forty years in the service of his country, handling millions of the peopled money and settling complicated accounts with very one, and who has come out at last free from debt to the trea.-ury, with no extra chargf against the government and asking for no extra allowances, may certainly be trusted with the exercise of executive olliee. The people know Gm. Taylor is both honest and capable aud arc tletc rmiued to trust him. We never before I lad the pleasure of!inrm ( - Judge Embree on the stump, and knowing that tie had no intt ntion of making a speech when he arrived in our city, we were highly delighted as was the entire audience, at the happy manner with wjiich he performed the duty im posed upon him. We insist that the proper committee of the Club invite Judge Embree to speakatthis place again between this and the election and give timely notice to the citizens of the county that they may be present and bear him. Contrast between Grs. Tatlob and Ges. Cas3. A writer in the Providence (II. 1.) Journal draws this contrast: Mr. Css has been selected QS the per?Ollifi cation of ultraism he is audacious in his designs and resolute in his ambition he is tenacious of his opinions and never modest in maintaining them he loves the turmoil of war, because it will enlarge the boundaries of his ambition. To secure the office of Picsideiil he will become the sycophant to seduce the ret kless and ignorant, he will promise the rewards of official patronage; his election will neutralize the conservative influence and add strength to that radical epirit which seek its own reward though at the sacrifice of national prosperity. With these elements of destruction.it is fortunate that the Whig Convention has selected a candidate of sufficient popularity to command success. We go into the contest with no mis givings, but elated with hope aud confident of victory. The old issues are for the time abandoned, and we must overt ome ancient prejudices, confidence must be restored, enthusiasm awakened, and with resolute and persevering efforts the result is no longer a matter of con jecture. Gen. Taylor hasalrealy won universal approbation for his modest and consistent deportment in every emergency. A man of fci..ular courage and possessed of remarkable prudence ardent in his friendship and liberal in his principles unexceptionable in his private character, aud with a mind and heart at tached to the great interests of his countryrtOt identified with local sectional divisions, butlrectoact and disposal to the right; en joying the confidence of distinguished Whigs, end recommended by a host of friends as a man who will discharge the duties of the office with wisdom, integrity and fidelity.
