American Facts. It is amon the worst
omens of the day that we have iu the U. S. no national feeling, no genuine love of coun try. The traveler in other lands finds eve rywhere the institutions and productions of a people prized by themselves thoueh they may be condemned by strangers. Here the order is changed. II any work in literature, art, or science, is by an American, it is ' set down by the mob of geniiemen who talk ol such matter? as altogether worthless, or as deserving a favorable regard only on account ol its resemblance topntneihin? fire:'ii.' The greatest lxicographer, and philo logist, was Noah Webster, an American. i he inventors, whose works have been productive of the greatest amount of happiness to mankind, in the last century, were Godfrey, Filch, Fulton, and Whitney 11 Americans. Ex. pa. Thrilling Sckne. A most exciting svenc recently occurred at the suspension bridge below the falls i f Ningara. As two neu were crossing, and abotii 200 yards trum the Canada side, they heard a noise iike the falling of a heavy body over the precipice a few yards above the bridge, and immediately observed a little girl rushing pasr several men to the lower side of the bridge, where she descended a sort of ladder, m idt by inserting pins into a pole placed in an upright position, from the top of the bank to a .-o t of recess under the clilf, a distance of SO r DO feet. From the point whore she de fended the 'aider she made her way with ire at rapidity beneath the overhanging cliils. and over the foaming waters that fretted wildly below, until she reached the point from above which she started. There de scending a few steps, she was seen attempt iug to raise and carry an object, which the gentlemen watching her movement became t'nuvinced was a child, that had fallen over he precipice. They hastened to the emi tf tho bridge, aud sent down some men, uh had not known of the accident. The child, a little girl 7 or 8 years of age, was I ished to the back of one of the men and rought up, alive, although greatly injured, uving one or both of its legs broken, and ne eye considerably bruised, but 'it will probably recover. That the child was not instantly killed is truly astonishing, as it must have fallen over 100 feet perpendicuirly, without anything to impede its progress on lue oroKen stones ociow. i no nine gill, only eleven or twelve years old, who de scended the dizzy height into the fearful :hasm below, cannot U2 suilictently admired for her coolness aud . courage. itc York Herald. A strange hscovery was accidentally made on Wednes lav last, at an ancient house iu the town of Brighton, on the vicinity ol the Worcestei Railroad, at the Cambridge Crossing, scalled. As a Mr. Howard, the present occupint of the house, was at wotk in his cellir; the earth partially gave way, and brought io light a room of some twelve feet in depih. with plank sides and top. The roof of 1 h i underground den was, about four feet below the surface, and was entered by a trap door and a pair of steps. This much of the 'ncral appearance of things was ascertain ed, and a removal of the earth, which was caved in, will, without doubt, bring to light iiioie particulars of this alliir. Mr. Howard was enabled, by a pirtial breaking way o! ihe planking, to hook out several , kegs from tho room, o:ie of which was about half full ol riitinieifeit American half dollars, all of the due of 1833.
