Washington, July 31, 9 P. M. TBe Senate, being called to order, proceeded to business. Mr. Benton gare notice that he would move for the establishment of a temporary Government in California. Mr. Breese, trom the Committee on public Lands, reported a bill to settle the titles of California lands, granting donation rights to actual settlers. The committee of conference on the natal bill reported. A debate ensued on the provision for the Chagres steamers to stop at Charleston. In the House of Representatives, the Committee of the Whole was discharged from the ' farther consideration of the bill granting lands to the Slates of Georgia and Alabama for railroad purposes. Mr. Thompson, of Tcnn., moved to la j the bill on the table. Pittsburg, July, 31, 9 P. M.
The operatives of the Victory Manufacturing ' Works are on a strike for the ten hour law.
' Some of them went to work at the Pennsjlva
nia mills in Alleghanjtown, when some of the other operatives attacked them. They dispersed the sheriff's posse, and several of the police were badly wounded. The editor gives a description and such a description of this battle, that we must transcribe it: 'One of the most brilliant acts of the Amer ican army during the war of 1812 with the Brit-1 ish and Indian?, was the repulsion of their uni ted forces at Canard's Bridge, by the gallant General Cass. After standing a heavy fire from our old English enemy, be in triumph drove them from their ramparts, and scattered their forces. Again the Brlish rallied and charged on Gen. Cass, but were routed with a signal effect. A third time they returned and attacked the American army, and a third time lid the gallant army under Gen. Cass repulse them with great havoc. Not content with standing three heavy cannonades against their superior armed force, he drove them in triumph nine miles, at every btep giving the British scoundrels a 'fire in the rear.'
