Lane. The notice was short, but, notwithstanding, the audience was large, and contained a good many more "Whigs than locofocos, u ho were induced lo attend to hear what could or would be Mid about Gen. Taylor, the IYopIes candidate for the Trefeidency. We have no time now to notice the speeches of either gentleman, if in fact they require a notice. They were like all the locofoco speeches that we have heard so far in Indiana, very poor apologies indeedso we thiuk, so thought the crowd, and so thought the speakers themselves; for they apologised when they commenced, apologised as they went along, and apologid when they concluded, as it was right and proper .hey bnouiuuo. ut course ;ir. uwen who re members the time when he ran against V f - 11 1. 1 Mr. rayne peiiecuy wen but lias no recollection of the time when he was a candidate against Judge Embree was sore ly perpltxed because the whigs in the pres cnt fight had no platform the locos had i large platform, one that was calculated to hold any quantity, but the whig, the stingy fel lows, had nothing but the Constitution to fitand upon, and as a consequence locofoco or ators had a hard time of it fighting against it although they are prepared to do it as usual rauier man 101 me tat oinces tney nave so long enjoyed. Mr. 0. spoke about an hour. and labortd very hard during the lime. II failed to raise the first whisper of applause for Cass, but succeeded in stirring up Old Zack's friends, who, when they got upon the street gave voice to their feelings in cheers for the 'irood old man and brave soldier. It was alto gether the tamest affair we have attended in a long time, aud the locos themselves looked, and no doubt felt, that if their great gun couldn't fight a "better li k"agaiutold Hough and Ready an I the Constitution thxn he did last night, they would undoubtingly find themselves in November next in the situation of Santa Anna at Bucna Vista, badly w hipped and scattered. The whigs were pleased, the locos mortified, and several who went to the meeting no', caring how they voted, came away confirmed Taylor men. Therefore, we say so fir, good, and the more &uch p(ethes there are made the better for the Whigs. Gen. Lane in his ren arks unid all that he had formerly aid of Gen. Taylor, hi- old tomliMtidcr. Increase or PurcLATiox in South Europe. We Und tu some of the late papers some statistics with regard to the treat increase in Souih Europe in population. The Atla, wit! much reason, attributes the now convulsed state of these old countries, in a great part, to their rapid physical increase without corresponding intellectual and moral increase. In 1731, Ireland had a population of 2,372,C21; in 1911 , fche had 8,205,000. Thus in the last 100 years, Ireland ha iuereased at the rate of 20 per tent, emy 10 years. The area of Ireldud is less than 31,000 square miles, or . about 20,000,000 of our acres. In 1831, she Lad 260 per.-ous to the qua re mile, or oite person to evtry two acres and a half of ground. In 1754, France bad 18,000,107 inhabitants. In 1830, ihe had 31,000,000, an increase of about 10 per cent, in 10 years. Fiani-e lias an area of 510,000 square miles, or about 1C5 persons to the square mile. Taking the above element, says the Atlas, with similar ones from other countries into a general view, and we have the following increase of population for southern Europe tince the peace of 1515. J-ranee increased 5,000.000 Trussia " 4,000,000 Ireland " 2,000,000 England.Scotlund and Wales incnl, 5,000,000 Spain increased 4,000,000 lklgium and Holland increased 500,000 Italy iucreased 1,000,000 Austria, and the residue of Germany ; increased 6,000,000 Increase in 30 years 27,500,000 The reader sees, in this statement, that Europe, south of the Elbe and Danube, has increased twenty-seven millions of inhabitants in less than a feneration! This is seven tnillions greater than the entire population of the 'L'nitedStates.and nearly equal to theentirepopulation of North America ! Such a sture idous fact as this, brings us up to the primary cau e of social di lHult ies in Europe. The fact is Europe has rapidly increased in population, without a corresponding increase in the means of comfortable subsistence. Died On Tuesday evening, August 1st, John li., infant ton of Uaac K. and Susan Mills.
