I have no private purpose to accomplish no party projects to build up nothing to btrxc hut my country. Z. Tatlob. Female Phtsicias. The Philadelphia Times eajs that a young vornan is one of the resident assistant physicians at the Philadelphia almhouse! She visits the several wards, prescribes, &c.,just as her male associates do. She is the same ladjr whom the press have alluded to, as a medical student in Geueva Col lege, N. Y. It is her intention, we learn, to visit Europe; as soon as she obtains her diploma, and then to return to this country to found a vudical college for female physicians! The male M. Ds will have to look out. Female M. D.'s, if pretty, will get all the business. Gzs. Lewis Cass asd the Irish People. We clip the following from the New York Tribune, The author Mr. William E. Bobinson, the regular Washington correspondent of the Tr ibune, who writes over the signature of "Richelieu." Mr. Robinson is a natire of Ireland, and a more euergetic and worth advocate of the liberty of that unfortunate and down-trodden country is nowhere to be found: Washisctos, Thursday, June 23. The friends of Lewis Cass tti trying to make it appear that he is the enemy of England, and the friend of Ireland. As 1 do not Tike to see Irishmen deceived I wish tomakea remark ou this subject. The man who supported Louis Phillippe and abused the clubs of Paris, which have since upset Louis Phillippe and burned the very throne that Lewis Cass praised, could not be a very sincere hater of Victoria, or her throne which is crushing Ireland in the dust. But no matter what Gen. Cuss hates, let us see what he loves. I am told that he loved Ireland because he voted for the Irish relief bill; but I know something ot the history of that bill, and I know that Gen. Cass betrayed the friends of Ireland on that measure. The friends of the bill knew that if it passed the Senate on the morning of the 27th of February, when it was moved to take it np by Mr. Crittenden, that it would probably pass the House before -it adjourned on , following Wednesday. Mr. Cass was in his neat upon this occasion, but did not vole for the bill, though his name was called three times in hearing.' Mr. Crittenden's motion failed. The bill did not reach the House till , Monday, and was lost. 1 saw at the time he ; was meanly dodging, and atked several gentlejut ii iu uuuic me lati, mm a in iu i, it uevrssary, substantiate the charge which 1 now make of his refusing to vote for the Irish relief bill. I He had made a speech the day before in favor 'of it: but in tin meantime it became known ' that Mr. Polk would veto it. (Mr. Cas? now fcays he approvtsof what James K. Polk has lone as President.) He sat in his neat and heard the shrieks of peri-diing thousands shrinking into graves of famine in Ireland. He refused to vole a single syllable to save them 'though he made a blarney speech for the bill. .Now his friends call upon the Irish to vote for him, as their friend! I have made this statement merely to show h was not their friend on the Irish relief question. ! But I have another specimen of his friendship to the Irish to expose. Some time after Mr. Polk came into power, be nominated Geo. M. Woodward of Ponu?ylvauia as one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of the U. States. Ml the friends of Ireland appealed to thi Senators to reject the nomination. Public meetings were held ia Philadelphia ind elsewhere, at which protests were adopt?d, declaring that those Senators who voted or the Native Judge would be looked upon as oes to lnsiimen. dome oi moss appeals were tublished at the tim? ia the Tribune. I unr eif sat up several nights, wri.in, to expose he bigotry and Nativism of Judge Woodward. .be vote was ot course taken in secret sesion, and Lewis Cass voted for him. He tho't e might as well give thi? Naturalized citizens . stab in the dark, as he thought they would lever find it out beneath the seal of secrecy. iet this is the man whom the Locofoco papers all the frienJ of the Irish! lhe liritish Govrnment, who put Judge Lefroy on the Bench o try John Milchel, and the Loco fo cos, who oted to put a bigoted Native on the Bench of ur highest Court, arc about equally friendly s the Ins! I might give other specimens of Gen. Cass's iendship to the Irish, but these are enough ) show that no Irishman who respects him If can call Lewis Cuss friendly lo his fellowpantrymen. . "The (whig) Convention assembled, the ree Slates having only two vacancies in their ileßations the Slave States ten. . The free "ates have IC8 voles in the Convention the we states 101 free state majority C7. The Estates having the power hold a caucus, and i unable to agres upon a Northern caudu'ate che Convention proceeded to ballot, each m. - mm m m legate voting by and lor iumseii, anu uener Zachart Taylor is triumphantly nominal . receiving votes from every State in the lionarMsvidence of national popularity, untcedented in conventions where there were .al candidates." Thus speaks the Cincinnati Gazette, and i ms to us, under such circumstances, those tended whigs who have since bolted belse of the nomination of a southern man re acted without reason. CT The declaration of Independence elo ! nfCtj enumerates the abuses of Executive ver by George III., at the head of which ids prominent tne charge of a violation o lig principles: He has refused his assent to laws the most home, und necessary jor the public good. or. this the head and front of all their crie 'cca. our Whig sires fought and conquered rious old Whig principle ! It is worlh as :h now as in "76. Rally whigs, rally around bid patriot Taylor who says he will not re"his assent to laws the most wholesome necessary for the public good.
The Distress or tue Court Editor. The
Washington correspondent of the New York Herald thus describes the eloquent distress and tribulation of the Government editor at the prospect before him and his party: - Ritchie is confounded and perplexed "lo the top of his bent." "What is to be done, gentlemen; in. the njrae of God, what is to be done? This is a horrid business. And Marlin Vau Buren that northern man with southern principles! Great God, what ingratitude to the Democratic party. To suffer timid- d wild boy of his to lead him about by the nose like a child.. Why, tlm man ia in his dotage or he is just showing his cloven hoof God d n him. Such are some of the regular ticket execrations of the Utica doings. Such are some of the specimens of the harmony of the harinouious democracy. - . Old Rouen asd Ready's popularity ox deck. The St. Louis Republican relates an amusing scene that was recently enacted on oue of the upper Mississippi packets, which occurred whilst taking a vote for Ficsideiit. The most officious man. in insisting upon the vote, was a United Slates officer, whose zeal outran his judgment considerably. When the vote was taken in the cabin, it was nearly 3 to 1 for old Zack, over every body els?. "Never mind," exclaimed the office holder, "we will have the vote of the deck there you will find the true Democracy." He was not a deck passenger himself. The committee went down to the deck, and took the vote there; and the thirty-eight passengers on deck, all were-Ju favor of old Rough and Ready but . seven, and twoof ihem swore terribly th?y wouldn't vote for Cass no how. uncle Sams atiacno was considerably chop-fallen. Locoroco Testimony. A great blow was made over Col. Jefferson Davis, of Mississippi. when he declared his intention, in despite of his family connexion with Gen. Taylor, to sup port for President the nominee of a Democratic National Convention, whoever he might be. Well, when we can get the testimony of - distinguished democrats in behalf of our whicaudidate, we feel pretty well satisfied. It is good evidence. Col. Davis, as we before stated, was an invited guest at the late dinner to Mr. Crittenden by his friends in Washington. The gallant American army in Mexico was toasted. This produced calls for Senator Jefferson Davis, of Mississippi, who rose and called to know If there was no officer of the army pres ent? The cry was, "yes, you are here, and you must respond.1- He did so, and made a very eloquent and much applauded speech. He al luded to Gen. Taylor's present political position, which, he said, was a source of some re gret to him. He did not wish to see him tram melled by party ties. He then went on to eu logize the army, and in doing so, he traced with a master's hand, and with all the fervor of one who feels what he says, the military ca reer of Gen. Taylor from Fort Harrison to Buena Vista, and so portrayed his stetling virtues and great worth as to charm his listening au ditors. Willi burning indignation he alluded to the power behind the old chief which took rom him his regulars just before the battle of Bu-Mii Vista, aud left him and his raw volunteers to the mercy of Santa Anna and his welldisciplined mighty hosts. Lamartine. Mr. Walsh, the very able correspondent of the National Intelligencer, in his late letter Irom l'ris. ays: Lamartine is certainly falling again into dis credit. It seems to his fate to bj called upon in all hours of difficulty and danger to stand forlh as the champion of peace and order, aim in that poiuion h! has always done his duty, and been hailed with acclamation. Hut, the dan ger over, he is charged with a want of firmness , , .
