From the Pittiburg Gazelle. THE past summer (1847) has been a very remarkable one. Frequent and heavy rain, followed by intense and long continued heat, bad the effect, in the first place, to promote a rapid growth of succulni vegetation, and in the second , to produce a rapid decomposition of vegetable matter, giving rise to much mi"na and spreading sickness, disease and death, in j which hsd heretofore been remarkable for their salubrity. We are credibly informed, that whole meadows, on which the grass was unusually heavy, rotted to the ground and was not fit to be cut. In Indiana and Illinois, the sicknesa was so general, that there was not enough well persons to attend upon the sick, whose sutii rings were prctracted by a want of proper remedies, as well as of good nursing. Much ot this suffering might have been prevented, had every famil v Lent nn hand a suddIv of medicines suited to coun

Io. 3. THld world has ever been the scene of the firceat struggles between Truth and error. No sooner does Truth propound an important theory, than er ror. with its legion of allies, seeks to arrest its pro zress. A most illustrious instance of this, was the oDPosition made to the immortal Jex.vek. His mas ter mind was led, under Providence, to the discovery of Vaccination, by which that dreadful scourge, the smallpox, was rubbed of its terrors. He tound that the nutter from pustules upon the udder of a cow contained a Drincinlo which would produce the almost divine results tor which he had so patiently and anx ously sought. Oppositon arose. Interested persons high in social rank and proipjaionnl position, ridiculed what they dared not deny! Thty ? serted that many vaccinated persons became covered with hair, and even exhibited horns rand a tailfanu that in one case a child ran on all fours, bellowing like a bull. But the current was oon turned. The British Parliament voted him X20,tXO sterling ($100,0W,) and the world sang his praises. The same spirit has come down to our own time.
