We learn tnat the Superiutendant of the O'Rielljr Telegraph Company has arrived in this city, and either has or soon will hare a competent force of workmen to put up the line connecting us at Vincennes with the St. Louis and Louisville Telegraph Line. He i& waiting for instructions from St. Louis. DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION. Baltimore, May 22. - The evening session of the Democratic conTention, on Monday, elected Andrew Stevenson, president, several vices and secretaries. . The committee reported on all the debates favorably, except those from New York. These were laid over, and perhaps will not again be taken up. May 23. . Mr. Stevenson, of Va., took the chair, at the opening of the JJemocratic convention this morning. . He made a very pertinent speech on the occasion. . Frayer was delivered by the Rev. Mr. Plummer. A Tote of thanks was tendered to Eryce, chairman, pro tern. Jude Mr. Morton, of Mass., moved to adopt the rules of the convention of l&U, except the two-thirds rule. This moticn was warmly discussed by Mr. Yancy, in favor of the two-thirds rule of s-aid convention. He remarked that they could do withc'it Neu York, if they desired to abandon the Demcciatic party. Mr. Morse, of Louisiana, spoke against the rule. He said it had before been the mt-aus oi disappointing the Democracy, and it might now be the means of springing some new outsider upon the people, and then farewell to Democracy. Mr. 'Morse explained that he meant no disrespect to Mr. Polk. (Here the alarm arose of the gallery giving way, A terrific scene ensued. Persons jumping from the windows and rushing from the gallery. Many were hurl; none, however, badly or mortally. After a recess of half an hour the panic subsided. It was discovered that the alarm arose from the cracking of a bench.) At the re-assembly of the convention, the debate on the two-thirds rule was resumed and finally adopted, by a vote of 175 to 73. . Among the ways was, Ohio, 23; Indiana, 9; Missouri, 6; and Wisconsin, 4. The Bum-burners were excluded from the convention on their refusal to pledge themselves to the support of the nominee. The convention then took a recess till 5, r. m. At 5, P. M., the convention met. The session was mostly occupied by debate onthe report of the committee of credentials of the delegates, which report was finally laid on the table. Two Barn-buners and two Hunkers will be allowed to address the convention to-morrow, respecting their claims upon the convention. The convention then adjourned till 'J, A. M., Wednesday. New York, May 23, 11, P. M. A telegraphic despatch was received from Paris, on the evening of the 5th inst., which was brought bv the Her mail. It is the latest news received. Some unexplained difficulty had occurred on the organization of the new Kenubiic. A com promise was effected and Lamartine, Dupont De Leure and Ledru Rollin will be proposed as Consuls. There were three candidates for President. The rote of the Chamber stood. Busher, 391; Yulate, 234; Ronet, 91. The former bejng chosen. CCT"It will be seen by the following tele graph report for the Louisville Journal that the Locofoco National Convention, up to ! o'clock Wednesday evening, had not dispos ed of the case of the New York delegations. It is probable during the evening session the Old Hunkers triumphed over the Barnburners. If so, the Journal thinks, the nominations may possibly have been made yesterday. Baltimoee, May 24, P. M. . Up to 10, A. M., the Democratic convention did nothing. A motion to admit members of Congress to seats within tili ball wag laid on the table. No individual distinctions, it was proclaimed would be allowed. Mr. Cameron moved that the Revolutionary soldiers be allowed scats within the hall, which was carried. Mr. Boggs, of North Carolina, offered a resolution to admit both the delegations from New Ycrk, which was laid on the table. The order of the day was called for, to-wit: the resolution allowing the two N. Y. delegations to address the convention in support of their respective claims. Mr. Dickinson, Old Hunker, spoke first, and was followed by Mr. Smith. Messrs. Foster Hunter end Preston King, Barnburners, then spoke for one hour each. Mr. Preston King, in his speech, said that the Wilmot proviso was the ultimatum of his associates. The Ohio delegation, by solemn resolution; had avowed it, and if it was overlooked the Democratic party would disband. Mr. Yancey, of Alabama, after all the delegates had spoken, moved that the Hunker delegates be received. He spoke against the Wilmot proviso, and maintained that slavery was solely a State institute. The convention here adjourned till 5 P. M. Pittsburgh, May 24, SJ P. M. The market is exceedingly dull for all articles. Prices are unchanged. The river is at a stand, with 9 feet water in the channel. New York, May 24,9 P. M. The Cambria sailed to-day with 80 passen gers and near half a million of specie. Sales of Genesee Cour at $5 25333 73, and western at $5 23. Holders of wheat are firm, but buyers do not meet them. The mairct lor cum and oats is dull. Sales of prime yellow corn at 5(i357c.
