DAILY JOURNAL. THURSDAY MORXIXC MAYA.
ExiYlXATlox. We take pleasure in giving infor mation to the public that there wilt be a public exam illation of the pupils of Ma. M. W. S.utukd's Female Seminary on to-morrow (Friday) commencing at 9 o'clock A. M. and continuing throughout the day. At the close of the examination vie learn, an Address to the Young Ladies of the Seminary is exiecUl from Rev. Mr. Dodgr. This i? one of the best insti tution for girls ever opened in our city, and deserves the liberal support ami encouragement of our citizen?. A recess ol only one week, at this time is given when the Summer term commences. Parents will ofcour?e attend the examination. - . 3" We wi-h to direct the attention of our frit- nds and tle public to the advertisements of .Messrs Kkie sex Sc Morgan in our column?. They have a very large &. desirable stock of dry goods on hand just received from t lie Eastern cities, and we arc satisfied that no better bargains can le had any where than they offer. One of the firm rest hs in an Eastern city, ml being constantly on the spot and acquainted with all tlie markets from which the est derives supplies possesses advantages for purchasing that few enjoy. Tlie house in this city is under the direction of the junior partner, who is most liberal In his dealings and fat winning customers from all parts of the country, (.ive him a call and satisfy yourselves that what we say is true. New Mrsic. We have received from W. C. Peters Sc Co, Louisville, a new and beautiful piece ol muic entitled, ' Welcome, Welcome. Merry May." Written Ly Miss Annie Inne Butler, a young girl toit.Q 10 or II years of age. Music composted by W, C. Fcters. The words are beautiful, and while read ing them we arc half - inclined to supcct Profe,4or Butler, the father ot the young lady, for a large share of their beauty. We have presented the piece to a .Iady friend of our'a whose execution w ill do it jus tice. We subjoin the words. - Merry May comes lightly tripping Through the woods and meadows gay; O'er the grassy carpet skipping, Welcome, welcome, merry, merry May. ' Now the blue eyed heaven's glances Brightly on the waters play, Where the silver bubble dances Welcome, merry, merry .May! Birds in sweetest song united. Warble on th blooming spray How they charm the ear delighted. Welcome, welcome, merry, merry May! And the phnt throughout the hours Of the bright and gladsome day . - ; Carols forth its song in flowers, Welcome, merry, merry May. Through the mead the streamlet straying, Murmurs iiiumc on its way. With the bright -eyed flowers playing Welcome, welcome, merry, merry May. While aU nature thus to meet her Joins in one harmonious lay, Let us also sing to greet her Welcome, merry, merry May! Daily Evaxsville JouexauTIiis staunch Whi sheet, for the last year published TriJ weekly and weekly, is now issued daily. The first and second Nos. of the new issues are on our table, and upon an examination of the contents editoriaUelectiousandadrertiements, commercial and business, we cannot but form a most favorable impression of the enterprising spirit of the Editor and the liberal and business character of those patronizing the paper. - Evausville is regarded as an important point: she now has two daily papers, both appear to be well supported. The Journal is decidedly one of the best papers in the State, and deserves a libeml patronage. We hail the enterprise with pleasure and most cordially do we wish it success. A'cic Albanv ISullelin. 9 Thank you, brother, for the above handsome notice. We hope and believe the liberality of our citizens will enable us to continue our improvements until the Journal shall stand second to no paper iu the Union. ave before us the three first numbers of the "Evassville Daily Journal," they have quite a business like appearance. The enterprising publishers deserve well of the citizens of Evansville, and ought tobe liberally sustained. We heartily wish them success in a pecuniary way, and we think they would realize it, if they would renounce old tricks,-aud odd notions about Governmental af fairs, and come out and advocate principles of tne ngnt sort. f miction Democratic Clarion. We are truly gratified to have merited your lind wiahes, and etum you our thanks. As to "advocating principles of the right sort,'' vre believe we are doing so to the best of our ability we think we are right and shall keep on in our course. Etassfille Daily Joubxal. We have received the firsthand second numbers of the new Daily Journal, commenced at Evansville. It is good size, and typographically a handsome sheet. The editors certainly deserve great credit, and we trust will be properlr rewarded for their enterprise. Wabah (Terrc Haute) Courier. It is worth an effort to win praise from such i a quarter. Thank you, air. - A RtruBLicAX Blacksmith AState Saved. -Amid the nr-ay curious scenes' that the European revolution have caused, the following is too good to be lost; L, "The Elector of Hesse Cassel fa mall stp with abouTCOO.000 inhabitants) was deaf, to all appeals from the people. The mob, therewn., miumcu iu use lurre, oeeing mis ne fled into his gardens and attempted to escape. He was caught, however, by a blacksmith who carried him back to his drawing room. The j man then locked the door and demanded comi . W, vuiai uciiiauua. Alieneevrstiinnid no! The blacksmith, then, by way of giving an example of phrsical force, smashed with one blow of his arm a highly ornamented tabic into atoms. This done, he shook bis fist at the Elector and told him he should never leave the room till he had yielded all that was required of him. The result need hardly be told. Tne Elector consented. The blacksmith, however, was a practical man, and was not disposed to trust to the promise of a Prince without fortifying himself with collateral evidence. He compelled the Elector to write a proclamation "willingly according to all his people's just requests." This was forthwith promulgated, and thus by one brawny arm and
the rouh good nature of its possessor, a State
was saved, tue Hector and his people are now on the best terms and seem not to knowhow to make enough of each other." fcSrWenrc authorized u announce JOHN EPIKER as a candidate for a scat in the Iowcr House of the next IiTcislaturo. at the ensuing election. tttrW are authorized to announce WILLIAM WHITTLESEY as a candidate lor a seat in the next IgU-lature. . . mari STEAMBOAT REGISTER.
