JUST GARBIN’ By MARYLYNN J. HOLDER
Am on the gossip front after a few weeks on the rationing front and first we tell of the new arrival that is reigning supreme in the household of the Mace McGUIRES on S. Elliott street—mother (Mrs. Lucille) and baby are fine and did you say that Birdie E. Hollins-Woolridge is expecting that bundle from heaven and then guess ’tis about time the Arthur WADDYS’ announced the new edition or am I late?—what, you don’t know about the 10 p. m. curfew they are planning in Henderson and what about the one they have for this city and guess you’ve seen Freddie Mockabee in the'burg from South Bend—he’s here to get his sheepskin at this June’s Commencement at Lincoln and we' expect another Mid-Year grad in any day now—he’s Leroy Yates, from Indiana U.
CONGRATS TO YOU FIVE — Gladies Middlebrook, Izetta VanLeer, Wilma Arnett, Marian Edwards and Madella Gracey, upon the completion of four years’ study at Evansville College—have heard mighty fine things ’bout the splendid record you five have had at the institution and such has a tendency to better race relations—more power to you in the years to come—and my Mother and Dad report a swell time in Owensboro during the week-end—in-cluded in the party were, two sisters, Shirley and Carol.
Up from Camp Rucker, Alabama, this week came 1st Lt. Clifford Hooper, handsome as ever and just imagine how the city femmes have been orbing him as he makes the rounds and another of the members of the armed forces is in the city—called here on account of a serious accident suffered by his brother—refer to Alvin Jackson—and did you enjoy that Andy Kirk stage revue at the Grand—we did and most of all, the sensational acts of Sinclair and Leroy—two Harlem sharpies' with jive and jive galore—sorta very much on the talented side, too—don’t you think and their rendition of “If I Didn’t Care,” an impersonation of the “Ink Spots” (they’ll be here next Friday) is really interesting and very easily tops the impersonation by, the -Glenn Miller singers on the platter. June Richmond did, “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To” in a very torchy manner and with her up-country upsweep with that gardenia and with a gorgeous black lace gown and white slippers—was something on the eye and ear-appeal side—she encored with “Murder, He Says,” done in a typical June Richmond swing style—Stepin Fetchit was there as was “Big Time Crop,” who does a novelty dance minus the crutch—very interesting and the Andy Kirk ork is a long throw from the featured Pha Terrell days when it was very much on the sweet side but as the cats say, 1 ”*“truly solid” . . . Andy and boys really swing out now.
They say the Swingland Revue minstrels at the Dodson World Fair Shows, now showing on Hiway No. 41 are good and the ork’s very swingy—they’ll be here ’till June 5th, maybe through that day—guess you’ll be seeing me at the Ink S^ots—Lucky Millinder' swingeroo on the eve of June 4th—will be there.
