E. Summers & Co., bankers at Martinsviljp, 111., have sold their business to Dwigcine, Starbuck &, Co of Chicago, who will conduct it under the name of the "People's bank."

Anew band recently organized at Vincennes under the leadership of Professor Harry Ward, of Terre Ilaut.o, will make its lirst appearance New Year's day. It consists of twenty-one pieces.

The proceedings of the meeting of the Woman's synodical home and foreign societies of Indiana held at Terre Haute last Oj'ober, have just been published by the Crawfordsville Journul in noat pamphlet form.

A company was formed a*. Paxton last week to operate a canning factory. The following named were elected officers: President, Wm. Purcell treasurer, Jonas Ladson secretary, Homer Hamilton. It is expected operation will begin January lot.

William Furney, formerly of Washington township, Putnam county, who was recently convicted of murdering a man in Karsa3, secured a new trial and was acquitted. His cousin, James Furney, was also convicted, but is again being tried.

Alonzo Berryman, of Union township, Montgomery county, sued the township for damages, claiming that a pond which was formed after the grading of a road caused ceveral membors of his family to have typhoid fever. He received $300 judgment.

Tuesday the Crawfordsville ArgusNews issued a handsome supplement in connection with their regular issue containing a complete list of the leading business houses of Indiauapolif, besides a picture of the soldiers' monument and the state-house.

All of the freight engines on the Vandalia have been draped in mourning, memorial of Will Baiersdorf, whose sad death occurred last Saturday.

J. A. Hollister, night yardmaster for the Wabash atTilton, Isas been appointed general yardmaster at Danville, to succeed George B. Russell, resigned.

It is rumored that the American express company is about to gain control of the express business on the E. &T. H., which is now handled by the Adams.

President Mackey, cf the E. & T. H., was in the city yesterday morning conferring with other officials of that road who are attending the Keith-Bledsoe trial.

Switchmen George Ellis and William Bennett, of the E. & T. II., retired Tuesday evening, and John Burgess and Frank Ohlenschlager wore appointed to succeed them.

Wm. Marquis, aged 14 years, was arrested at Worthington last Sunday by Detectives Furlong and Sollett,of the Wabash, charged with attempting to wreck the fast express on the Wabash at Rich Valley last October.

The electric headlights with which two of the engines on the Vandalia are equipped are attracting much attention from the residents along the line. Every evening the. depots are crowded with visitors waiting to see them pass through.

John Harring, a brakeman on the T. H. & P., had his left forearm terribly crushed between the bumpers Tuesday* while making a coupling at Isabel!, III. The llssh was badly lacerated Bnd bones broken, but none of the arteries were severed. He lives at Paris.

Tuesday afternoon while the wipers were engaged in cleaning the 23, which had just been brought in from off the toad, they discovered a live chicken roosting on the trucks. It was dusty and dirty and looked as if it had had a long ride, but when and where it got on is a mystery.

The New York Central directors yesterday declared the usual quarterly dividend of 1 per cent., and also an extra dividend of one-half per cent., being the first extra dividend the company has paid since the announcement of the policy a year ago to return to a 5 per cent, dividen 1 basis as soon as practicable.

The car service association, which was organized last week, met yesterday at Indianapolis, and elected Mr. D. T. Bacon to the office of general manager. There were several candidates for this responsible position. Mr. Bacon has had years of experience in lines of business akin to what his duties will be in this association. At one time he was connected with the B. & O. express company, and he has had to do much with matters of transportation. The new manager will take hold at once, and have everything in shape for beginning business January 1.

At the new Dennison hotel yesterday were gathered near a dozen officera of the Pennsylvania company. First Vice President J. N. McCullougb, James McCrea, general manager of the lines west of Pittsburg John F. Miller, superintendent of the lines west of Pittsburg, and several other officials from outside of Indianapolis, besides the local officers,

were of the party. The meeting is one of those informal and friendly conferences concerning the welfare of the Pennsylvania lines, which the authorities of this corporation make it their poliey to hold.

RX'WILSON-CUMMINS FUNERALS.

Kiiilroad Mou Pay Their Last Respects to the Lamented Dead. The funerals of the two men killed Monday morning in the O., I. & W. accident, near Covington, took place to-day, says the Indianapolis News of last evening. This morning over 150 railroad men marched to the late residence of Trainmaster J. M. Cummins, 97 west Seventh street, where, at 9 o'clock, services were conducted by the Rav. J. A. liondthaler. They followed the remains to the Union station, whence the dead was taken to Charleston, 111., for burial. The engine of the train conveying the body was heavily draped in mourning. Among the flowers was the design of a locomotive several feet in length. J. A. Van Winkle, general superintendent of the I. & St. L,aud the DHII-bearers, including H. Hervy, J. W. Vest and A. Bullmat,, conductors U. J. McConney, local Bgent T. S. Smiley, chief clerk of the freight department, and George McCutcheon. ysrdmaater, were among those who accompanied the remains to Charleston.

This afternoon the railroad men marched to the late residence of Superindendent I. II. Wilson. Services were conducted by the R*v. Dr. J. E. Gilbert. The burial at Crown Hiil was private.

Btiflitlo Car Service Association." BLTI-'AI.O, December 18.—The organization of the Buffalo car service association Wcis completed here to-day. The agreement was voted for by all the roads centering in this city except the Grand Trunk and the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburg, whose representatives withheld their assent until their supervisors had been consulted further. Superintendent Edward, of tho Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg, formerly superintendent of the Erie Jk Buffalo division, was elected manager at a ealary of S3,000 per year. The new agreement goes into effect February 1, 1S90, on which day car service collectios will begin.
