CORRUPTION IN A LEGISLATURE.
Hold Charges or Hribi-ry In the SlUnourl LecUlature.
ST. LOLIS, December 10.—The PcstDispatch cf this morning print?, under rtaming headlines, a tive-eoluran expose of alleged legislative corruption at Jefferson Cily, Mo. It claims that the live stock inspection bill, introduced by the St. .Louis butchers' union in the last legislature, was dt-fiated by the absolute purchase of state senators. It is admitted by the friends of the measure that a fund of 1,000 was raised to be expended in support of the bill, but that the money was to be uEed in theboodling of legislators is denied. It is claimed however, that legislators sold out to the butchers and then increased their infumy by d6Berting their employers when the vote came on that they met the agents of the dreoaod beef monopoly and in bogus games of poker pretended to win what was really a bribe for their votes that they openly negotiated for senatorial votes and disclosed that they were ready to vote for whichever side would pay them the most that one senator offered to guarantee th« vote cf a combine if he was uiveu $1,000 for one of the trio, but he was loo high and tha votes were cast for the dressed beef interest. It is further claimed thnt the dress beef combine distributed 625,000 in boodling, and that the money was handled by two young men from Kansas City that members of the houEe of representative received money and voted accordingly, but some senators received it and vot#d the oth' wav. Finallythe bold charge is mads that "the dressed beef monopoly secured the defeat of the bill, spending more iu" ?y than the butchers had, and they s,.»nt" it on ths senators who voted against the measure." The bill waaor.e which provided that no beef should be gold in the state of Missouri u: less it had been inspected on the hcof. It was a light between the butchers and the dressed beef combine and the latter one.
The Post Dispatch tbeu priuts a number of interviews with parties who were interested in the passage of the live stock inspection bill, all of which admit that money was used and many of whom a«E«rt they were notilied just how much money the dressed beef combine proposed to use in defeating the measure, and the amount was five timee as much at' the butchets could raise.
Three of the state senators, whose names Bre mixed up iu the Ecandal, were interviewed, but all denied there was auy foundation for the boodle story. The re*ult of the expose will doubtless be an investigation and sensational developments are looked for.
AN IMPORTANT SHIPPING CHANGE.
The IS. & O. Koad Driven th« l'urn«» I.lno of Steamer* From Kaltlmora. BAi.Tt.MoKt:, December 10.—The Fur-
ness iine of 6teBmers will in all probability be forced to withdraw its business from this city. It appears that about a week or so ago the Furness line received written notification from the B. & O. railroad company that after January 1, 1S10, the company would not ijuote their rates in the West or give them "through bills of lading." This, of course, means that the steamship company must quit pier 3'-! at Locust point. The Furness line is naturally compelled to seek dock accommodations elsewhere, and they have already made arrangements for wharfage for several of their vessels at Newport Xewp, Ya., where they can get the same rates as here aud save the time necessary to come up the Chespeake bay, but it will be a serious blow to the commerce of Baltimore because the Furness lines receives a considerable portion of the total tonnage business which comes to this port.
There are many surmises among the shipping interests as to the cause of the action taken by the railroad company and it has even been rumored that the B. Jt O. railroad intends to build a line of transatlantic vessels of their own. It is also said among business men, that Newport News is practically owned by New York people and the action of the
B. A O. railroad may seriously interfere with the shipping of grain from the west by the way of this port.
