Mr. "Reynold?, Manager of Guarantee Co.. Discusses ,the Reek Formation.

the

HE TAKES ISSUE WITH PROF WA LDO, OF THE POLYTECHNIC

The Variations in the Strata in This State, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

To the Editor of the Ervrcits: SIR: The purpose of this commun cation is to in a timely manner preclude the improper naming of the oil producing rock as found in the vicinity of Terre Haute. ID your Monday's issue, De cember Gib, you published an article from the pen of Professor C. A. Waldo, of the Polytechnic institute. The state ments there used for. outlining the anticlinal and for naming the rock corniferous are previous and much farther fetched than his conclusions without argument that the Guarantee No. 2 will find the rock fifty to sixty feet below the rock level of the produc ing wells and therefore be a failure. Con cerning the statements made by him and without being technical, it may be asserted that any attempt to name stratified rock from merely local obser vations, of rocks and drillings gathered from wells so unfortunately bunched and from tke seeming resemblance of the drillings to other well known and easily distinguished stratifications distant points must in almost all cases be fallacious and liable to bring confus' ion upon the already unphilosophical ar rangement and names given to the known rocks of our United States. All investigations must be carried over wide areas and in different directions, and the variations in elevations above sea level must be given careful and proper con sideration, for the same geological age may produce rockB of widely different characteristics in different localities and at a connected geological horizon. It is clearly shown that the Devonian rocks

New York state are sandstones and shale, but while these were forming in New York state and in the Appalachian or Pennsylvania oil fields to the southwest, limestones were forming in the central states, Indiana and Illinois, and the Devonian rocks, where found in these states, are mainly shales of very little thickness. The term cornifarous (limestone) is from the Latin cornu, a horn, and fero to bear, for the reason that its distinguishing characteristic is the presence in its beds of horn or flinty crystals or nodules, and bsariDg, instead of fossile, as the corals of the Niagara, seldom anything else than shells. The place of the corniferous is in the Devonian, and at its base and far removed from the knobstone group mentioned by Professor Waldo as seemingly identified in the wells here, but which certainly have not been found in wells bore west, of the coal bluffs, east of the city The Genesee slate of the Devonian found in wells here, is little else than indurated mud charged with bitumen. The place oE this formation was distinctly found and marked in Guarantee No. 2, now drilliogat Eighth and Spruce streets, but far above the locale given it by Pro fessor Waldo, and was, as in the Guaran tee No. 1 and Pha-nix and Rose wells Nos. 1 and 2, charged with petroleum. The rock, however, has no physical resemblance to the Ohio or Genesee shale, as mentioned in the article named. In deference to the scholarly opinions of the professor's articl", I, however, believe it is easy to prove that the oil producing rock here is the Niagara limestone, aud I hope the question will be taken up by competent geologists and the productive horizon, both for scientific and practical purposes, definitely named and described. My own reasons for calling the oil rock the Niagara are as follows: First, the fossils thus far found at the oil producing depth are characteristic of the Niagara. A rare and valuable coral specimen was blown out of the Exchange well when it was snot with glycerine, and I tried to get it long enough to classify it but for a failure to appreciate its scientific value it was examined carelessly and curiously by everybody, and finally lost. Fossils found above the oil horizon were Devonian. Second, the position of the oil rock is traceable north and east and northwest and southeast from the wells already drilled in this and other parts of the state, until we find the Niagara the bed-rock of the great gas fields north of Indianapolis, and the upper rock of the Cincinnati arch, extending through Ohio to and beyond Findlay. The mouth of the Joseph well is 498 feet above tide Staunton well 710 feet above tide. The Joseph well found the rock at 1.G85, the Staunton at 1,453, showing an elevationto the east of 30 feet to the mile. Koightsville and ReelBville show a similar rate of elevation to the east sufficient to put the rock in place at Noblesville, as the great Niagara or bed rock of that gas region, and in a measure account for the terrific artesian pressure and water volume of the lower water veins here found. The Miagara is known to extend over a vast area and is productive of oil and gas in paying quantities in Kansas and Missouri, and at Chicago it is highly petroliferous and shows a like descent in its dip to the south. Wherever it is dolomitic it is petroliferous. Here at Terre Haute in all the productive wells it is highly dolomitic. The same may be said of all limestone rocks of whatever name whether Trenton, as in Ohio, or corniferous, as in Canada. Where these rocks are found as described by Professor Waldo as white and shelly the wells drilled for oil are found unproductive. It must have been from some of the unproductive wells the specimens mentioned were examined, for they were in every case white and shelly, and if these terms were used to identify the horizon as corniferous they are too widely applicable to limestones of various geological ages to serve any valuable purpose in this instance. That the rock here, whatever its name, may properly be, is productive, thousands of barrels flowing from one well renders undeniable That the anticlinal, the reservoir desideratum exists here has been as fully established by the drill. The direction of the anticlinal is, however, buried beneath the drift, and is still a matter of conjecture. Tt|© records of the wells to the east and lorth-' east of the producing wells show a Wpid descent to and an abrupt elevatioraBt or near the Exchange well. The ideser,

THE TERRE HAUTE EXPRESS, SUNDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 15, 1859

named from east to west. Whether Guarantee No. 2

is to be pro

ductive or not no man can safely pre diet. It was located, however, on correct principles. The .great educator of geologists, the 2,000 pounds of iron tipped with steel drills and urged by the piuck of the men interested, will, within a few days, give further evidence of all the points merely referred to in the interests only of a correct local nomenclature for future uses in scientific references and investigations. If upon each one of the rgdii drawn by Professor Waldo, with Guarantee No. 1 as a center, the wells already drilled had been located by the plucky searchers for the "fascinating stuff," the rock might go unnamed for time, for. as I believe, the oil would havi busied some of tbem.

A DIAMOND'S SURE PROOF.

A Simple Method to Ascertain the Gen ulneneAS of the Stone. A diamond expert has made public ready way of identifying one of those jewels. Prick a needle hole through card and look at it through the doubtful stone. If it is spurious two holes will be seen distinctly on the card if it is a dia mond only one hole will be visible, for there ii no other stono at all resembling the diamond but that gives a double re flection.

This property is also made use of for determining an uncertain stone. If the finger is placed behind it, and looked at through the stone with a magnifier, the grain of the skin will be plainly visible if the stone is not a diamond, but other wise it will not be distinguished at all A diamond in a solid setting may be die tinguished in the same way. If genu ine, the setting at the back cannot be distinguished, but if a false stone either the foil or the setting may be plainly seen.—| Jewelers' Raview.
