Dust is a gieat enemy of window plants during the winter, and they must either be well protected or be given an occasional washing with milk-warm water.
A good application of wood ashes on the llnver beds intended for next spring planting will be found very beneficial. Work well into the surface.
New planting of raspberries should be tnade every third year, as after this time the older plants will have passed their best stage for bearing.
Generally the older a tree gets the less fit it becomes to bear transplanting to a good advantage, and more work will be required to secure a good start to grow.
There are quite a number of varieties of grapes that will give much better results if the vines are laid down and are properly protected during the winter.
D.vaif pears do much the beet on a moist subsoil and with a rich loam that is thoroughly prepared. If not rich it should bo made so by the application of well rolled manure.
The cherry is one of the best fruit trees that.v.e have that can also be utilized as a shade. The principal objection to planting it in the yard is the liability, or rather disposition, to send up sprouts.
An old apple tree can often be entirely renovated by carefully pruning, scraping oil' the old barb-, digging the soil up carefully around Ihe roots and applying a good fertilizer, working well into the soil.
In setting a young tree in the place where an old one has died it will pay to take out a quantity of the old soil and replace it with new. Thorough work in this respect will give much more satisfactory results. In trimming trees always let one leader grow up etraight and then let the branches grow out from this. By this plan crotched trees that are iiabla to split may be avoided.

A uniform, low temperature is much the best for keeping fruits. Trees that are to be transplanted nt xf. spring will be the better if a deep, narrow trench is cut around them three feet from the stem with good sized trees, or less with smaller.
