Phil Thompson, formerly in the jewelry business at Paris, wa9 burned to death on the lGth at Sheridan Lake, Colo. While drunk he endeavored to start a fire in his stove with coal oil. There was an explosion and before he could be rescued from the flames his bead, arms and legs were completely burned off.

The trial of J. B. Benefield, of Mattoon, on the charge of murder, resulted in hie acquittal. This is one of the oases growing out of the hanging William Monre by the mob in the euramerof 1888.
