"kM CITY IN BRIEF. A Charles Wilson, of 700 north Water street, fell in a fit at First and Main streets last night, and had to be assisted home.He frequently falls in a fit on the street.!

Mr. R. S. Judd, the contractor layiDg the concrete walks about the new Normal school building, began grading the Sixth street walk yesterday, preparatory to laying the concrete.

A lady of Seeleyville presented to County Commissioner Dickerson, yesterday, a petition asking the county commissioners not to grant license to Mart Knant and Lewis Hurburt to sell liquor at Seeleyville. The petition was signed by sixty ladies, and was originated and presented under the management of the W. C. T. U. of that place.

Tbe entertainment given by the ladies of Asbury Church at Dowling hall last night was well attended. The musical part of the programme predominated, there being but one recitation, that by Miss Filbeck. The ladies of the church desire to publicly thank Professor Kilburn and all those who so kindly assisted in the musical last night.

Last night as Charley Poole, a colored man well known in the west end, was walking with. a colored woman near Sixth Btreet near Main, another colored woman began throwing stones at them. They ran to a hack, hustled into it and were driven away.

PERSONAL.

Colonel Hudson continued to improve yesterday. Now is the time to select from a large stock of bedroom suites at Probst Ji Fisbeck's.

Voice culture and instrumental music thoroughly taught by Prof.,1. R. Bukowitz at 1003 South Center street.

The novel "She," by H. Rider Haggard, the English novelist, is a wonderful piece of imagination. "Robert Elsemere," by Mrs. Ward Hunt, startled the religious world to a new train of thought and thinking. The most novel thing about Old Cobweb Hall is the success Peter Staff, its proprietor, has made in the sale of pure goods, bought direct. The people know, are convinced, believe and patronize him when they want a pure liquor for medical purpose. Always kept in stock.

DR. GLOVER,

Specialty, diseases of the Rectum. REMOVED TO SEVENTH* POPLAR STREETS.

My full line of fall and winter woolens now in stock. A. C. FORD, 521 Main street.

Peter Miller will not make a display at the Fair this year as he is kept busy making up his fall stock of harness. However, the display at his store, 505 Main street, in the line of light and heavy harness is finer than ever before. He has just received a new and complete line of turf goods and anything a horseman may need can be found fit his store. Sign of dappled gray horse,

Who's got the Key?

GREATEST LINE OF 3CJITARS in the city. The opera music store, 320 Main street, distances all competitors in guitars. They have the following different makes: Martin, Washburn, Bruno, Benary, and Sontag, besides a full line of cheaper grades.

FILLING A LONG FELT WANT By supplying the people of this vicinity with the very best of boots, shoes and slippers at prices never equalled.

A discount given on all fall and winter suits ordered before September 5th. A. C. FORD.

FINE FOOT WEAR.

As usual we find the enterprising shoe king of this city, (Mr. T. J. Griffith) at the fair with a beautiful display of boots, shoes and slippers. He has certainly the highest grades of foot wear. He requests careful inspection. His place of business is at No. 32 south Fourth Btreet, east side, between Main and Ohio.

"MUSIC SOOTHES THE SAVAGE BREAST." No one but is influenced by sweet music. The Opera Music Store, 320 Main street, is tilled with musical instruments. Accordeone, harmonicons, mandolins, banjos, zithers, violins and all kinds of sheet music. And the prices? Why, they will astonish you they are so reasonable.

TOY STOVE.

A UNIQUE GIFT TO THE SMARTEST CII5

This stove is to be presented to the girl residing in Vigo county, 12 years old or under, who makes the greatest number of correct words of the letters contained in "Townley stove company, 009 WAbash avenue." Lists to be handed in before 12 o'clock Monday, September 2nd. This fine toy stove is on exhibition in the Art hall at the fair grounds. Examine it and work for it. Value of little store S8.

YOUR HEATING STOVE

This winter can be bought of George H. Snyder, at 21 south Fourth street, at a considerable saving of expense. George sells at the bottom. He doesn't care to carry goods over and he makee prices which do not fail to keep the stoves moving. He makes a specialty of tinning and if your roof or gutters need repairs it will be well to call on him.

If you leave your order for your fall I suit now you have the full line to select from and will be sure to have the suit when you want it. A. C. FORD, Isgsi 521 Main street.

The Edgar county fair will be held at Paris, 111., September 3d, 4th, 5th and 6th, and Edgar county will, no doubt, sustain its reputation for being among the best county fairs in Illinois. This I year the displays in all departments and the special attractions will be finer than I ever before. The T. H. P. R. R. will run a daily excursion during the fair at I one far*, for round trip."! Train leaves

Never saw anything like those fine kid shoes for ladies at $2. GEO. A. TAYLOR, 1105 Main street.

NOT AT THE FAIR.

It is so unusual for the enterprising shoe firm of Stein & Hecklesberg to be without a display at the fair that their absence attracted attention. It was also a source of regret to the firm, but the fact is that Stein & Hecklesberg are pushed so with the work of getting in order their immense fall stock of boots and shoes that they have had no time to make preparation for anB exhibit at the fair. Always in the fsrefront with novelties in footwear, their stock will be heavier than ever this fall and will em: brace everything useful and stylish in footwear.
