AMUSEMENTS.
The Fenner & Crane All Star comedy company made its first appearance in this city at the Opera house last evening, appearing in "Pique." The company in all respects is the best that has been here playing at the popular prices of 10, 20 and 30 cents, and this comparison is made as to acting, costuming, and all that contributes to a first-class performance. The merit of the company is in its completeness of detail and Btage preparation quite as much as in the artistic excellence of the ladies and gentlemen of the company. There can be no doubt that the w»ek will witness steadily increasing audiences. This evening "The Sea of Ice" will be presented.
On Friday evening, August 30, the picturesque and romantic play, "Beacon Lights," will be presented, Fenner & Crane's company laying off on that date. The piece was presented here last season, and left a very good impression. The company, which is a capable one, includes Mr.. J. H. Cassar, Miss Xeva Wharton and the talented soubrette, Mies Fanny Cohen. The advance sale opens on Wednesday morning. Regular prices.
Messrs. Fenner «.t Crane carry all the special scenery and effects used in the "Sea of Ice," which is to be put on tonight.
Mme. Modjeska is in New York. Wilson Barret sails for New York October 2.
Emma Abbot begins her season September 16 in Cleveland. The Bald win-Melville company opened at Greenville, Ohio, last night.

unusual for the enterprising
shoe firm of Stein & Heckleeberg to be without a display at the fair that their I absence attracted attention. It was also a source of regret to the firm, but the fact is that Stein & Heckleeberg are pushed so with the work of getting in order their immense fall stock of boots and shoes that they have had no time to make preparation for ans exhibit at the fair. Always in the fsrefront with nov-1 elties in footwear, their stock will be heavier than ever this fall and'will embrace everything useful and stylish in footwear.
The Edgar county fair will be held at PafiB, III., September 3d, 4th, 5th and 6th, and Edgar county will, no doubt, I sustain its reputation for being among the best county fairs in Illinois. This year the displays in all departments and the special attractions will be finer than ever before. The T. H, & P. R. Peter Miller will not make a display at the Fair this year as he is kept busy making up his fall stock of harness. However, the display at his store, 505 Main street, in the line of light and heavy harness is finer than ever before. He has just received a new and complete line of turf goods 'and anything a horseman may need can be found fit his store.
