LOANING THE SCHOOL FOND.

Fifty-Nine Application* for that Which Will Come to Vlfo County.

There has been much talk o( there being an abundance o( money in circulation and the (acts support the assertion, but the (act that a good thing can not be too generally distributed ana can not be in too large quantities is now being illustrated in the county auditor's office. The school (und money which is about to be distributed among the oounties has brought fifty-nine applications to borrow that whioh will oome to thiB county. First come, first served, will govern the loan. Auditor Armstrong says that there are enough applications in now to take all o( the $91,648. There is now in circulation in this county $114,000 o( Bchool (und money. The two amounts will aggregate $205,647.

PERSONAL.

Qet a five foot lawn settee (or $2.75, at Probst & Fisbeok's. Unole Sam is a mighty name. Known at home, respected abroad. 'Old Cobweb Hall is a name known in Terre Haute, respected in Vigo county, and has a reputation (or honesty and (air dealing seldom acquired by a liquor dealer. Why so? Because its proprietor keeps faith with the people keeps pure goods bought direct.

The Township Assessor's Report.

Asesssor Cornell says that the value of new improvements will reach $100,000 when the list is completed, as there are many lists to be oollected yet. Where Potatoes Come From.

Potatoes are natives of Chili and Peru, and were originally taken to England from Santa Fe by Sir John Hawkins in 1563. Others ascribe their introduction to Britain to Sir Francis Drake in 1586, while their general introduction is mentioned by many' writers as occurring in 1592. Their first culture in Ireland is referred to Sir Walter Raleigh, who had large estates in that country, about Youghal, in Cork county. It is said that potatoes were not known in Flanders until 1620. Hedyn says a fine kind of potatoe was first brought from America by Mr. Howard, who cultivated it at Caldington, near Bedford, in 1765, and its culture became general soon after. Italy doee not appear to loom up as the original potatoe garden.

Soaked Corn for Hogs.

Where hogB are kept on clover in summer we should prefer to soak the corn, since, at such times, their teeth are apt to be tender. The corn should be soaked about twelve hours. As a rule, when the teeth of hogs are sound, we do not think it pays to soak the corn. Especially with hungry hogs, they do not so (ully grind down soaked corn as when (ed dry. Authorities, and also the results o( experiments, differ as to the economy o( (eeding soaked rather than dry corn. The trouble of soaking corn is but little. I( you wish to try the experiment, have two suitable vessels, and soak alternately in each, using clean water each time for soaking.

Even in summer bedding should be provided in the stalls for all olassss of stock that are confined at night, aa cleanliness is very important in the summer season. The lees manure in the stalls and stables the (ewer flies and insects.

Small potatoes, pumpkins, sugar beets, mangels and turnips thoroughly oooked and mixed with a mixture of equal parta ground oats, corn and mill feed form a rood recommended for fattening fall pig®-

Crab grass will soon appear now, as it is a summer plant.' It is very easily destroyed when young, bnt if allowed to grow is not eradioatea without difficultly.

The evidence* of the valoeottheoil findinthleoity ooatinue to multiply with thedaya. The la—ing of lan^ ilw a alow and tedious proosss at fint.becauae thoee owning lands were not fied that they would not be trapped.but SB the days p—ITFL the oilflever apiead and land became more •ccisesabls, still there remained aprafsrenoe to lease to home people rather than strangers and that preference prevails 'generally. The work of the Standard oil company ia always more or leas fruitful," and that company succeeded in purch ten acna of land, so far aa heard titanthen may be mom. The fact that this company had sent representative men to this city, and this fact that they mained here, waa strong evidence of the rating of the oil find by experienced oil men. The purohaae of land by this same company waa additional udoonoluaive proof that the indications had not been misjudged. Ths presence of thousands of visitors in the city on. Thursday left no doubt aa to the interest our neighbors of the valley are taking in the discovery. The interest of home people haa not relazed in the organization of liew compenies, commencing new wells, leaning land and entertaining visitors who come to look upon the gushing wonders. Large numbers of leases have been filed with the county reoorder, leaass to different home people and to strangers. Loaaca ot oil landa made yeeterdav the biggest day the county recorder has since his election, thirty-one ininstruments being filed for record. Of these instruments four were releases of mortgages, four were quit claim deeds, five were warranty deeds and the mainder leasee for oil lands. These eighteen leasee comprised 1,190 acres of land, and were made to Josephue Collett and Charles T. Doxey, the latter ot Andereon, Ind. The leases and tracts are the following:

All the wells iat which the drills were being used yesterday rapid progress was made. The Kinser and Exchange wellB were both in the neighborhood o( six hundred (eet and racing for advantage.

In the account o( the excursions on Thursday mention o( the T. H. & P. was omitted. There were more than four hundrnd excursionists on its trains, which large number waa largely owing to the in(atigable efforts of the company's officials who were among the first to become actively interested in the excursion project.
