NEWS OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
The Block Coal ^iners Are Leaving the Clay County Field.
IT IS THOUGHT BUT ONE-THIRD WILL REMAIN.
Arrested and While in Jail His Wife Returns to Her First j•„.» Husband—Notes.
Special to the Express. BRAZIL, Jnd., May 28.—The block
coal miners are leaving Clay county daily. It is estimated that there were three thousand in the district last fall, one thousand of whom were sent adrift by the closing down of mines then that there were two thousand when the scale expired, May 1st of whom at least four hundred have since left. They go out on almost every train. A cjtizen of Center Point reports halt gone from that place. A miner here, of many years' experience, who is watching the situation closely, said yesterday: "Unless a scale is agreed on very soon, there will be lees than a thousand miners left in the district." They go to the adjacent bituminous territory, to the mines of Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania. "Assurance of work," as they express it, "will induce about all of us to leave the block coal district." The Staunton miners held a meeting and decided to accept the scale and go to work, on the condition that they are not required to sign any'ironclad contract), and that none of their number are discriminated against and victimized. A scale has also been agreed on at the Clay City and Lancaster works, where the men have gone to work at 70 cents. .Co*rt.
BRAZIL, Ind., May 28.—Clay circuit court is in session. Several criminal cases have been disposed of, but no convictions. Worley, the self constituted committee of one to solicit fundBforthe relief of the Center Point miners, takes a change of venue to Putnam county. Schoonover, the Saline man who stole the tobacco and cheese from the E. & I. depot, for which the company had to pay, was released, the prosecution failing to appear. Having spent several months in jail, a former husband of his wife having re-claimed and re-married her during the time, the judge thought he had already borne enough to requite the demands of justice. The grand jury will not be called'at the present term, and it is thought that the docket can be disposed of within ten days or two weeks.
