Mrs. Martha C. Hathaway and husband sold to Herman O. Foster a lot of tifty-three feet froutage, ou the north aide of Main street, opposite the west line of Thirteeutb-and-a-half street, for &1,000, yesterday.
A skittish young horse hitohed to a light skeleton buggy, in which a young man and woman were riding, became frightened at an engine on the Van at the Chestnut Btreet crossing yesterday afternoon aud ran away. The horse started up Tenth street kicking and jumping, but was caught by an employe of the Bhops before any great damage was done. The dash-board was shattered, and the young man driving was slightly bruised below the knee by a kick from the horse.

Mr. Hugh Daily and Miss Julia Bolter, both of Alum Cave, Sullivan county, were married at St. Joseph's Church, Tuesday evening. Father McEvoy, officiated.
Mrs. William Cook, of north Fourteenth Btreet, and Mrs. Philips, of South Bend, who have been visiting here, leave this afternoon for a visit among friends and relatives at Paris, 111.

G. J. Grammar's Authority aa Traffic Manager Is Extended to All th® System.
An average of thirty-five freight care daily are repaired in the Van shops. The Van pay-car returned from ita trip up the Logan yesterday.
M. Maxwell, superintendent of. con' etruction on the Bee line, was in the city yesterday.
Robert Edwrfda, of the boiler shop, has been appointed inspector of boilers in the round house.
John Wagoner, of the machine ehope, who was injured a few days ago by a piece of iron falling on his foot, is able to be out.
The car works have turned out this week forty of Street's Western stable cars, and yesterday fourteen of them were taken to Chicago.
Joseph Derolf, of the machine shops, went up to Marmont Btation yesterday and laid the pipes for the fountain in the park at that place.
The C., H. '& D. carries persons between all points on Sunday at one fare for the rouDd trip, that is, between any points at which Sunday trains stop.
The ticket brokers in convention yesterday at New York bewailed the fact that the railroad companies were trying to have the business declared illegitimate.
It is stated that under the new schedule the fast express over the I. & St. L. road covers the eighteen miles between Danville and the Belt crossing in fifteen or sixteen minutes.
The case of the state of Ohio against Henry S. Ives and George H. Staynor for swindling the stockholders of the C.. H. & D. railroad was decided in the state supreme court Tuesday in favor of the defendants.
Crawfordsville Argus News: The Vandalia is decorating its stations all along the line and fixing them up for the summer. Blooming geraniums and foliage plants have been set out about the fountain at the Main street station and it is now one of the prettiest places in the city.
In a general order issued by D. J. Mackey, president of the Mackey system, and George P. Evans, general manager of the L., E. & St. L. railway, to the effect that G. J. Grammer's authority as traffic manager is to extend over the said L., E. & St. L. consolidated, with headquarters at Evansville, Ind. His authority goes into effect on and after May 21,1889.
At a meeting of the Belleville & Centralia and Eastern Illinois &. St. Louis railroads held Tuesday it was determined to consolidate these lines with the Mackey system, which comprises the Louisville, Evansville & St. Louis, the Evansville & Terre Haute and the Peoria, Decatur & Evansville. The Belleville, Centralia & Eastern will now construct a line from Belleville to Mt. Vernon, which will complete the link of the Mackey system into St. Louis.
Logansport Journal: A novel step has been taken by the master mechanic of the Wabash road. An .imperative order has been issued that in future no young man will be given a situation in their shops to learn any of the skilled trades who has not passed a satisfactory examination in the third grade of the common schools, or of a grade in other schools equal to that grade, and a certi ticate to that effect, signed by the principal or superintendent, will be required,

AMUSEMENTS.
"The Celebrated Cas9," a3 presented by the Melville dramatic company, was one of the best plays of the ^jeek. The important parts of Jean Renaud, De Moray and O'Rourke were well played. There was a good house, most of it on the first floor.
SOME FAMOUS BRIDGES.
Coalbrookdale bridge, England, is the first cast iron bridge. It was built over the Severn in 1779.
The covered bridge at Pavia, over the Ticino, was built in the fourteenth century. The roof is held by 100 granite columns.
The bridge at Havre de Grace, over the Susquehanna, is 3,271 feet long, and is divided into twelve wooden spans, resting on granite piers.
The bridge of Holy Trinty at Florence was built in 1569. It is 322 feet long, constructed of white marble, and stands unrivaled as a work of art.
The cantilever bridge over the Niagara is built almost entirely of steel. Its length is S10 feet, the total weight is 3,000 tons, and the cost was §900,000.
The Rialto at Venice is said to have been built from the desigus of Michael Angelo. It is a single marble arch, ninety-eight and a half feet long, and was finished in 1591.
The Bridge of Sighs at Venice, over which condeniaed prisoners were transported from the hall of judgment to the place of execution, was built in 1589.
The bridge at Burton, over the tfrent, was formerly the longest bridge in England, being 1,545 feet. It is now partially removed. Built in the twelfth century.
Tay bidge, old bridge over the Tay at Dundee, destroyed December 28,1879. New bridge, about two miles long, has eighty-five piers height above high water, seventy-seven feet.
The Niagara suspension bridge was built by R.iebline in 1852 '55 at a cost of §400,000. It is 245 feet above the water, 821 feet long, and the strength is estimated at 1,200 tons.
Clifton suspension bridge, at Bristol, has a span of 703 feet at a height of 245 feet above the water. The carriage-way is twenty feet wide and the foot-way five and a half feet wide. Cost, $500,000.
The Britannia bridge crosses the Menai strait,' Wales, at an elevation of 103 feet above high water. It is of wrought iro", 1,511 feet long, and was finished in 1850. Cost, $3,000,000. .•--J
