Special to the Express. BKAZH^, Ind., May 2*2.—Seven hundred persons went frotn this city to Momence to-day on an excursion.
The county commiyioners hare let contract for re-rooting of court house, slate roof, for $493.50, to be completed within sixty days.
The electric light company, McDowell lumber company, E. W. Smith, J. N. Halstead, and Crawford & McCrimmon hare posted notices at their mills and shops that henceforth all. payment of employes will b9 made by the hour.
The water works trustees elected at the regular May election, the first chosen by the city, after giving bond each in sum of $5,000, and before entering actively upon the discharge of their duties came before the city council last night and all tendered their resignation, because of the insufficiency of the compensation, the council having fixed their salary at $25 per annum. The resignations were accepted.
The following are the salaries paid Brazil city officers: Mayor, $500 clerk, $480 treasurer, $675 marshal, $480 city attorney, $250 police, $40 per month city civil engineer. $3.75 per day street commissioner, $2 per day councilman, $100 per year.

Mr. Phillips, of Brazil, is the possessor of a four-legged chicken, hatched Monday.
The Brazil tire department, assisted by a band, gave a picnic at Momence yesterday.
William A. Kice, of Montgomery county, has been bitten by a colt suppostd to be alllicted with hydrophobia.
Monday evening the Sunday school pupils of the M. E. Cburcb, at Mattoou, organized a branch of tbe Loyal temperance legion with 154 members.
John Ferguson, a Loxo, 111., boy, found a railroad torpedo and, not knowing what it was, exploded it with a rock, badly lacerating his face and hands.
Miss Minnie Robinson, of Kelteyville, was thrown from a wagon onto a pile of rocks by a runaway horse at Danville, Monday afternoon, and badly cut about the head, face and neck.
Oscar Bowles, a former resident of Covingtoa, was arrested at Chicago Saturday, charged with burning his sister to death in a box car on the O., I. & W. tracks near Covington about a year ago.
Blue Mountain Joe introduced a new and novel way of drawing a crowd at Clinton last Saturday. He bought the toll bridge across the river on that day and allowed the farmers to cross free of charge.
While cleaning the windows of the Red Front saloon at Crawfordsville Tuesday morning Wesley Foster fell off a step-ladder and through one of the large panes of glass, llis right hand was badly cut, and he also received a gash or two in the head.
Tom Hoffman, the burglar with whom the Vincennes police have had so much trouble during the past two years, pleaded guilty to numerous charges, Tuesday, and was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary, disfranchised for three years, fined $50, and made to pay the costs of the suit.
A young man named Aaron Winter£» 18 years old, living near Sumner, 111., slipped from an O. & M. train about three miles west of Vincennes while stealing a ride Tuesday and fell under the cars. His left leg was run over between the ankle and knee, and his right foot crushed horribly. He was taken to Vincennes for treatment.
The following changes in salaries of city officials were made in a secret session of the city council at Crawfordsville this week, and is causing much talk among the citizens: The salaries of the first and second assistants of the tire department were raised from $40 to $50, that of the mayor from $G00 and fees to $700 and fees, and the city clerk from $450 and fees to $600 and fees.
Vincennes Sun: The Cable mining company, which has just been incorporated under Indiana laws is composed of Dr. J. H. Rabb, J. L. Bayard, S. N. Chambers, W. A. Cullop and Mrs. M. D. Malott, of this city, and W. J. Benton, C. B. Clarke, of Santa Fe county, New Mexico. The purpose of the company is to mine gold ore and a shaft has already been sunk 150 feet. Ore is being taken out that assays $15 to $20 per ton and the lead grows richer the deeper the shaft is Bunk.
Mayor Grant's Appointments. NKW VOKK, May 22.—Precisely at noon to-day Mayor Grant made announcement of his appointments as follows: Police commissioner—James J. Martin. Commissioner of charities and corrections—Edward Sheehy. Corporation counsel—William H. Clark. Djck commissioner—J. Sargant Crane. Police justices—Charles N. Tainter, Edward Ilogan and General John Cochrane.
