September 19. 1877, prohibiting animals running at large, and repealing all ordinance and parts of Section 1. From and after the passage and publication of this ordinance It shall te unlawful for any person or persons owning, keeping or harboring any animal of the bovine species, or any horse. Jack. mule, colt hog, boar, sow or barrow to permit the same to run at large within the limits of said city. Any person or persons violating the provisions of tills section snail upon conviction thereof be fined In any sura not less than one dollar or exceeding the sum of twenty-five dollars and cost of prosecution added thereto.

RocKviLr-E, Ind., May 15.—The murder trial of David Watson, the butcher, for the killiDg of John Hudson at Judson last fall, was commenced yesterday afternoon, the entire lime being consumed in soliciting a jury. Congressman Johnston, Frank Howard and Howard Maxwell are for the defense, and Messrs. Puett & Hadley and Prosecutor Daniels for the Btate. Watson and Hudson had an altercation about a dog and Hudson was stabbed and killed. Watson is subject to epileptic fits and his attorneys will fight his case on this line. It will occupy the court's attention about four or five days, as there are many witnesses.

The Parke county normal, in charge of W. H. Elson and others, started out Monday with thirty members. The membership is growing and the instructors are the beet to be found.

A Brakeman Killed,

Special to the Express. CLINTON, Ind., May 15.—A brakeman named Nelson, employed on Mike Burke's switching crew at the Newport gravel pit, had both legs cut off near the body, while attempting to couple a water tank to the steam shovel, Monday. In stepping from the tank, in some way his foot was caught between the ties, and he was thrown across the track. He died yesterday from the injuries received. When found he had 398 on his person. He was a stranger to the rest of the railroad men, and it was his tirst day with the C.

[A Danville special says: Edward Taylor, of this city, was crushed to death while making a car coupling at Newport, Ind., last night. Taylor was a carpenter, and was braking on the road a couple of days to oblige a friend who had left to attend his mother's funeral.]

The E. & I. Company Appeal a Dunnage Salt—Tliat Church War. Special to the Express.

BRAZIL, Ind., May 15.—At the March term of Clay circuit court Dr. B. P. Spelbring, of Saline City, obtained a judgment for |7G against the E. & I. railroad company for services rendered a passenger injured in the South branch wreck of November 18th, 18S7. The defense was made on the plea that no member of the company nor any of its agents had employed or ordered such service. The defendant now appeals to the supreme court.

Fred Schultz, our enterprising young druggiBt, has bought a $200-a-foot front on south side east Main street, and will proceed at once to put up a brick business room.

The case of Williams against the rolling mill for damages, venued from this county, is this week.on trial in the Putnam circuit court. Williams was badly and permanently injured in the explosion of January 9th, 1888. The rolling mill company took the change to Putnam county.

A special session of the Vincennes Presbytery will convene at Vincennes soon to take action on the relations of the Rev. T. Calvin Stewart and his congregation, this city.

Neighborhood News Notes.

Carpenters are scarce at Paris. Hog cholera is raging at Ridge Farm, 111.

The ladies of Dana are endeavoring to establish a library association. A branch of the humane society was organized at Hoopeston, III., Monday.

The state Sunday school convention of Illinois convened at Mattoon Tuesday.

The Wabash river at Clinton is at a lower stage now than at any other time during the past forty years.

A whole drove of hogs owned by A. H. Bowers, of Darlington, were overcome by heat last week and perished.

Among twenty-two traveling men stopping at a hotel in Crawfordsville last Sunday were eleven clothing salesmen.

A number of petitions are being circulated at Crawfordsville getting signatures of those in favor of free gravel roads.

Mrs. Sarah Skaggs, a Montgomery county pioneer, died at her home in Crawfordsville Monday morning at the ripe old age of ST.

A ball of fire about the size of a man's fist was Been by many persons Monday evening dancing along the electric light wire at Danville.

The gas company at Crawfordsville have secured the services of an expert driller to remove the broken drill from the bottom of their well.

John Kane, a machinist employed at the Washington shops, got a finger badly mashed, Tuesday, by getting it caught in a lathe which he was running.

Levi Goodson, the colored man caught in the act of robbing the postoflice at VincenneB Sunday, April 28th, was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary by Judge Woods Monday.

Newport is happy over the fact that she is to have anew Houring mill with a capacity of seventy-live barrels daily. The proprietors are Colonel Orr and Mr. Purdy, of Hutsonville, 111.

In accordance with a new state law the factories and all employers of Crawfordsville have adopted the eight-hour system. Where it is necessary for the men to work over that time they are paid by the hour.

Brazil Timee: Printed notices are posted at various places over the city warning miners of this section not to go to either Gordon, Strawn, Johnson mines, Th ruber or Newcastle, Texas, claiming that in doing so it meant "blacklegging." The notices are signed by a committee of Texas miners.
