kine, chairman of the Democratic county central committee, who, it waa thought lost week, could not survive a severe attack of congestion, is now better, and thought by the family physician to be out of danger.

The city "cow catcher" was on extra duty last night, impounding twentythree night-prowling kine—a "boss" collection, sure.

For the first time in our history, the city elected water works trustees last Tuesday: W. W. Moore, Llewellyn Evans, and William Shaw, who, at a special session of the council held last night, were severally placed under bonds of $5,000 for the proper discharge of their duties.

The rains of last Saturday and Sunday were not gt neral throughout Clay county, but coo lined to the north and south, a strip through the central part getting no more !i in a sprinkle. 'Albert A. Brewer, for some time a teacher of penmanship at the Terre Haute commercial college, later, bookkeeper for the lioyal spice mills, Wichita, Kan., has made a run back to Center Point, the place of his nativity, and, by the aid of the clerk of the Clay circuit court, kidnapped a Miss Emma Leachman, whom, as we have reason to suspect, he will carry back with him to the boom city—the land of the "augar-bowl" and the "salt-box."

A meeting of the operators'! ondj'miners' executive committees was held here yesterday forenoon and afternoon, discussing the situation, but nothing settled.

Neighborhood News Notes. The Kaox county watermelon crop is in splendid condition and promises to be a large one.

A 10-year-old boy was seen walking on the street at Logansport Sunday afternoon so drunk he could hardly move.

John Burnell, working in a stoneyard at Danville, had his feet badly maehed Saturday afternoon by a large stone falling on them.

Saturday night the residence of John Glenn, near Vincennes, was burned to the ground with its contents. Loss, $1,500 insurance, $850.

Mrs. Elizabeth Brown died Sunday at her home near Prairie City, Clay county, from burns received a few days ago while burning a brush heap in her yard.

The Sullivan county commissioners have rejected all bids for building a jail and sheriff's residence, and will readvertiee on the present plans.

The Humane society at Vincennes has secured the conviction of a number of men for cruelty to animals during the past month. The last case will be tried to-day.

The general conference of the German evangelical synod for this district, whioh is composed of Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, will convene at St. John Church, Vincennes, on Thursday, and continue until Monday.

Robert W. Pottatind his wife, Nancy J. Potts, of Monroe City, Knox county, are in jail on a charge of arson. It is alleged that Mrs. Potts attempted to burn down their own dwelling. Her husband is nccuscd of being au accessory in the alleged crime.

THE BLOCK COAL MINKS.

Tlie Conference Off, AM tlie Operators Refuse to Arbitrate. Special to the Indianapolis News.

BKAKITJ,

Intl., May 11.—The committee

of live appointed at the delegate convention of miner?, last Thursday, was in conference yesterday afternoon with representatives of the operator's state executive board. The miners' request for arbitration was again formally refused on the ground that the condition of the market does not admit of arbitration. The offer of 70 cents for summer and 75 cents for winter is the best that can be done. The meeting re suited in nothing definite, but another conference is called for to-day. The strike among the miners in Illinois may help toward an adjustment of the difficulty here, since if our mines were running, more orders would certainly come in.

Watson, Little & Co., of Chicago, operators of the soutb mine, deny the report that they have offered their miners last summer's prices. They say 70 cents is all that can be paid, and that they are with the rest of the operators in the demand for the reduction.

LATKK—The conference between the operators and miners closed finally at noon to-day, the former still refusing tc arbitrate. The delegates will refer the question back to the miners for further action.

The differences which resulted in the late strike of the miners of the Springfield, III., district were adjusted at a joint meeting of miners and operators. It waa agreed that the price to be paid for mining from May 11 to October 1, 1S89, should be 55 cents per ton from October 1 to May 1,1890, (50 cents per ton, all mines to have acheck-weighman, to be paid through the office, and a seven-eighths-inch screen.

The Illinois house of representatives yesterday passed McCall's bill amending and revising the mining laws, by a unanimous vote. ^4

Dry Goods.

NKW YORK, Bfay 14.—The Jobbing trade in dry goods was moderate, but a fair business was done at first bands. Agents continue to sell r'u~d lota of cotton goods for fall, while a large business was done In 4-4 bleached shirtings, following a reduction of 14 cent per yard, made in Wamsutta, New York mills, Utlca nonparlel and Mohawk, Acme brands, the price of each being made 1014 cents a yard. This Is not to be taken as a break In the market, or weakening, as It has been looked for. and as It Is only going back to last fall's prices for orders, the busts on which most all stocks have been reduced, and on which basis the general cotton goods market has an upward tendency, with some goods already advanced. Woolen hosiery and underwear were more active.
