GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Good Rains Over Much of the Spring Wheat Region. CHICAGO, May 8.—There were good rams all over the sprlng-whejit country, enough It was thought, to effectually break the drought. Thin was of course a bearish tuituence. On the other hand were the large export purchases reported from New York late yesterday aft -moon and the large decrease, 2.240,000 bu, In the quantity of wheat and Dour on ocean passage as per the official cable to the board. July wheat opened at 78l£e, against 78Sfe8 7844c at the close last night. Ten minutes after the start the market was steady around 78y4f?78%c, though it had in tbe meantime touched 78*»c and 78\c. Receipts of corn were 23 cars less than were expected, and on this July opened tttm at 3414334% selling immediately afterward at 353tt?3SVbc. Receipts of hogs were 1,500 head less than expected and prices were 6c h'gber. July pork opened 5c up at $11.93.
Receipts were 14 cars winter wheat, 2 cars spring, 260 cars corn, and 132 cars oats. Withdrawals front store were 8,0u6 bu winter wheat, 3.773 bu spring, 331,827 bu corn, and 81,429 bu oats..
There was a very sensational bulge In May wheat It opened at 8256c against 83c as the close last night. Hutchinson and Schwartz-Dupee started bidding on It and speedily rushed It up to 86t^c. June, In the meantime, advanced from 82lic to 81c, and July advanced to 791,RC. When July touched 79c Hutchinson's men began losell it out The crowd kept buying it for some little time, but at the end of the first hour July broke to 78\c and there Were some signs of weakness. The probability that llutchlnson worked the near future up for the ,mrpoeeof unloading July did not seem to occur tbe average trader. In the meantime July com advanced to 3o%t?35Vc under buying by shorts. The light receipts, the smallness of local stocks, the large shipments, and the momentary strength in wheat caused the advance. July pork opened at $11.96, sold to $12.00, and reacted to $11.90 within a few minutes after the opening
