A Horse Thief Lynched.

Thirty People Drowned.

MANILA, March 26.—The Spanish steamer Mindano has been sunk by collision with the Spanish steamer Yisayas. Thirty of her crew and passengers were drowned.

/Pt-' AiroSEMiNTOT The audience attracted to the Opera house by Lydia Thompson's burlesque company was large, but not of the kind which reserves seats to any extent. "Penelope," the burlesque presented, offers some catchy music and a display of -burlesquees of various degrees of comeliness, shapeliness and age. Lydia Thompson, herself, has been before the public many years and preserves her figure better than her voice. While no individual singers were noticeably

ood the singing in chorus was pleasing. J. B. Redcliffe and Kelleher contributed the comedy which showed any fun.

There was graceful dancing by Lydia Thompson and Miss Millie Marion, the Cupid, and the eccentric dancing by Miss Rose Newham, the eccentricity being chiefly the easy motion which carried her foot over her head.

Johnson & Slavin's minstrels will no doubt meet with a hearty reception at Naylor's next Saturday evening. They come back headed by some of the cleverest men in the burnt cork art, with the usual attachment of sprightly dancere, good singers and a display of pretty scenery illustrating the birth, advance, rise and triumph of minstrelsy. William Henry Rioe, the famous burlesque artist, will be a special feature. The advance sale opens to-morrow morning.

Mr. Geo. L. Smith, manager of James O'Neill's "Monte Cristo" company, is in the city completing arrangements for the appearance of Mr. O'Neill and his excellent company in "Monte Cristo" at Naylor's on Wednesday evening, April 3d.

DECIDED AGAINST GOVERN Oil HO VET.

The Case of the New Trustee for the Insane Hospital. INDIANAPOLIS. March 26.—The argument on demurrer in the case of the state on relation of Joseph L. Carson vs. Governor Hovey to compel the governor to issue a commission to Carson as a member of the new board ef trustees of of the insane hospital was heard by Judge Howland to-day. He sustained the demurrer, thus holding in favor of the new boards and against the governor. By agreement no mandate was issued, and the case was appealed at once to the supreme court. The legislature selected the trustees and the governor refused to issue commissions, claiming that the legislature, had no power to name the men who should fill these offices. It has been the custom for many years for the legislature to select the trustees of the state benevolent institutions, and Governor Hovey is the first executive to question the constitutionality of such action. To-day's decision is understood to be pro forma, and the real test will be heard in the supreme court. -g
