On his return from HotSprlngs he heard, for the first time, of the S. S. S. as a remedy for rheumatism. He tried It and six bottles made a "•oiupleto cure. BRAZIL THE BANNER BOOM TOWN OF THE STATE.
A Protest Against the Payment of Railroad Tax—A New Swindle in Illinois.
A farmer named Thomas, near Carini 111., felled a tree upon his wife accident ally and she will probably die.
Friday of last week, four persons were buried at Brazil who were killed out right or died from injuries in the mines
Milroy Gordon & Co., of Greencastle, assigned Wednesday. Assets, $9,000 liabilities, S7, ")00, and there is no thought but that the creditors will receive dollar for dollar.
Aaron I. Doty, of Greencastle, is the fortunate owner of a gold coin about one-fourth as large as a gold dollar. It bears a single inscription, jg". It was the gift of a '49er.
All the wild animals of this vicinity are not gone. This week a shipment of 1,500 6kins was made from Rockville. Of these 500 were skunk, and the remainder mink, COOD, opossum and fox.
An effort is being made by the citizens of Clay county to get a new mail line established between Brazil and Clay City. The advantages are many, and everybody is signing a petition in its favor.
The Rockville Republican this week was isued in double form that is eight pages. Tlio extra space is devoted to Christmas advertisements and almost every business in the town is repns sented.-
Silas Moore, who was postmaster of a small office in Lawrence county, 111 failed to settle up with the department and ran away. After a chase of two weeks he has just been captured by a United States deputy marshal.
The Vincennes News, under Mr, Knight's management, lias been increased in size and is now a eevei column patent inside folio. The paper is Demo cratie and already is much improved, (ireater improvements yro promise-:!.
The Mattoon Commercial this week issued a twenty pago Christmas edition, bound to get there, no doubt, and dis tanco all competitors. There is plenty of good Christinas reading in the paper, not t' mention other miscellaneous matter
Clem Porter, a^ent nf the Vtndalia at Deiinison, who a few days ago severely cut a young man named Waller, with a razor, has escaped prosecution by resigning and leaving. Waller agreed to not prosecute him if lie would leave the country.
The explosion of a keg of powder in Anchor mine, at Brazil Thursday, more or less burned Win. Furgeson, Andy Woods, Joe Flynn and Wm. Smith Flynn lives at Perth, the rest at Carbon. Woods was worst burned. He will ba laid up for some weeks.
The latest swindle that has been op eraled with success in parts of Illinois is the sale of Shetland ponies from photographs. The buyer makes a selection and pays ?5 in advance, the balance to be paid upon the arrival of the pony which, strange to say, never arrives.
The Brazil Democrat thinks it knows what it is saying when the following emphatic statement is made: "Without puffing, blowing, or prevaricating, we rise to say that no town in the state of equal size with Brazil, though it be in the gas'belt, has had a more substantially prosperous season of improvement and commercial activity."
In the case of the officers and directors of the Knox County Fair association, who wero tried for permitting gambling on the grounds, tho two directors were lined S'2o each, and the officers discharged. The judge held thattho officers had no power to prevent tho lease of the ground for gambling purposes, while the directors had the power to lease, aud exercised it. Bocause it was the first offense the fine was made $8.
Crawfordsville Star: Major Safely's $20,000 residence at Lodi, in Parko county, is nearing completion. The interior ia all of hard wood finish, a few rooms being of mahogany, and all other appointments of this gorgeous palace are of a like substantial character throughout. The major will read his evening mail by gas light, having tho necessary machinery to manufacture this metroolitan illuminator from gasoline.
Citizens of Brown township, Montgomery county, protested against the payment of a tax levied several years ago in avor of the old Anderson, Lebanon & St. Louis railroad, which has recently been put on the duplicate to be used in the construction of theMidland. Arguments were heard by tho commissioners this week on both sides, and the board decided to cancel the tax. Colonel Crawford, of the Midland, will appeal from their decision, and there will be further litigation.
Rockville Tribune: No wonder so lany people hold tho law in contempt, 'here is no lack of reasons for it, and such an experience as this county is now aviug is one. A judge sends the Roberts case to another county, appoints an attorney whoso known method-is to get all he can out of the public treasury for such business then another judge appoints an attorney to prosecute and grants new trials, which with other judicial "monkeying." piles up unnecessary expense on the taxpayers. And after all of this, which on the face of it shows only an attempt to evade justice, the criminal is likely to go unpunished, and the money spent to be worse than wasted.
