Indianapolis News: "The increase in the volume of business transacted by the (J., H. & D. system may be indicated by the amount of new ruling stock placed on its tracks within a few weeks. This consists of ten entirely new engines and between 5,000 and t,000 cats of all kinds.
The freight business on the Vandalia is very heavy comparatively at present. Daring the summer months there is usually a falling eff and the number of clerks in the freigh office reduced, but a fieight man btated yesterday that at pres ent the entire winter force is on duty, and thev are having all the work that can be handled.
As the men in the Vandalia erecting department were lifting engine 175 ofl her wheels, a rail which served as a bar broke, and tbe whole locomotive dropped distance of six inches. Had tbe engine been much higher, there would probably have been several men under it, and the result very bad, but as it was no one was irjured and the engine was not
It is not generally undei stood what a general overhauling of an engine is. Every few years it is necessary to repair an engine, and it is sent to the shops. The engine is taken off the wheels, stripped, the boiler sent to the boiler department for cleaning and overhauling, the fire box repaired, the drivers planed down and if necessary new tires put on, the frame taken apart and new pieces put in when needed, then put together again, the boiler put on, covered and finally painted. That is a general overhsuling.
Indianapolis News: "The Niagara excursion, which left ttie Union depot at 11 o'clock to-day over the C.,.H. & D. road, proved to be a large affair. There weie six reclining chair and sleeping eats which were entirely filled, so that persons buying tickets to dav could not secure ssa's in them, ana besides these were four ordinary coaches literally orowded. No stop is to be made after leaving this city until Hamilton is r«ached. An improvised dining car is on tue train, which may be used as a boarding place while the excursionists remain at the falls."
The Indianapolis Journal recently stated that Supt. Neils on, of the C., H. & D. and Vandalia. had requested the heads of all departments to look about and see where there is a chance to further economize in tbe operations of the road, either by leducing the number of men or their wages. Supt. Neilson was in the city yesterday and said that as yet there had been no consultation in regard to lowering wages. He said that it was the object to reduce expenses as much as possible, but he bad not done anything in regard to lowering salaries, or said anything of the kind reportt.d in the Journal.
The Cayugs, Vermillion county. Jour nal has seen the report that the Illinois Central is tiving to jet into the Indiana coal fields and says: "They have already got the right of way from Paxton to Danville. It will ba remembered by our tit'zens that a survey was made a few years ago for a railroad to run from this place to ville by the way Coil Branch. There is no doubt the Illinois Central folks have their eyes on that road. 11' the road IB built at all, and at present there seems to be no doubt abcut it, it will be built through this place if any effort at all is ade by our people."
