Mr. William Hicks is a gentleman of much pertonal importance in Terre Haute.
If there w^re no all i.ight gamMirg •aloona thfre would net be this constant fear that the faro banks nld resume operations:
The Democratic press is much per turbed over Mr. Blaine'snnvoments and have started him homeward a year before hisj.mrnev is over.
General Boulanger, who wanted to tijht all Germany, now asks permission to fight one little Frenchman. "God the music hells" is a ii rst rate description
General Simon Boliver Buckner was more successful yesterday in K°ntucky thsn in his contests ia the war, but he had Betty and the bsby to help him.
The next time the tally sfceet forgets are tried the prosecution will please see to it that Sim (Joy's reputation is net presented to the jury as that of an honorable man.
The gamblers are trying very hard to prv open the town. The police must vigilant this week if they would obey the orders issued to them. There was gambling Sunday night in a gambling room, and it is reported that a reguiar game is going in another place.
All the rag-tag and bob tail of the Democracy that a week ago was ready to throw Coy and his gang overboard as Jonahs, will now follow tbe lead of the "Damn—their—cowardly—souls" or«an, and want to join in a popular ovation to the rascals. We have many of that kind here in Terre Haute.
His plethoric excellency of the White House seems to have "tumbled," as the boys on the street sav—or may sit is Dan'l—and is trying to head off the invitation committees. He begins to re.l in that he is being used for advertising purposes and fears that the soap mea will be after him next.
Tne police think they at last have the "colored burglar" who has been seen by many startled residents of the city. With all due regard for that priociple of law wbi^h presumes the accused to be

innocent until the evidence establish** his guilt, we hope they bs.e. Anyhow, keep Bill looked up for a time.
The public debt statement for the first of the month shows a decrease of $4,844.894, and "total cash ia the treasury $456,304 36," which if distributed would give each Hoosier something more than $8. Mr. Hendricks will turn over in his grave on su^h an official statement from the first Democratic administration.
The tally sheela were fraudulently altered. No one disputes tiiat fact The alterations were without exception in favor of Democratic candidates for office. No one disputes thef. The men in whose possession they were when altered altered were Democrats. No one disputes that. Indeed, the great predominance of Democracy in the affair is w-hat seems to have prevented conviction by the jury.
The first Brooklyn bridga jumper was paid $200 or $300 a week b» a musuem «an aster. The supplyof bridge jumpers increased, and in compliance with the laws of supply end demand, th? price went down, until now we suppose the young fellow who accidentally fell off the bridge, yesterday, and was sent to the hospital comparatively unir jjred, woald be a drug en the museum market. It begins to look aa if Sam Pitch wasn't such a great fellow, after all.
McGarigle's plot to escape may prove to be -i paor one after all. While the extradition treaty provides for the mutual rendition of p?rso»3 accused of murder, assault with intent to commit mur der, piracy, arsoo, forgery or the utterance of forged paper, the Uniied States government has the right to demand his return on the ground that his tscape was secured by the conaivanc-! of officers of a Canadian veitel. Mcreover, thh government can demand the punishment of the Canadiin subjects who aided hi? escape.
Secretary F-iirchiid is Baid to be preparing a tariff revision bill that will satisfy both wings of the Democratic party. Mr. Fairchild is a novice. Ha will be a wiser in after he submits his measure. Whea John K. Tarbox, a smart young fellow from Massachusetts, ros? to engage Blaine in a meal rable debate, "Bill" Morrison walked to his side and asked if he knew what hell was like. No," said Tarbx. "Well, you will know in the next two hours," rejoined the Illinois politician. Mr. Fairohild will also have a vivid impression by the time the next session cf congress adjourns.
The Democratic press is charging that tbe prosecution of Coy was a bitter partisan persecution. Perhaps, there were no forgeries committed. The trouble with the average Democrat is that he looks at the prosecution of these rascals not as a means of administering jastice but as a proceeding aimed at his party. When the scoundrels were fi islly brought to trial and it looked as if cjnviction were csrtain every sncalled self-respecting Democrat regretted the aS*ir for its political effect not for the evil exposed. Now that his Indianapolis' idola are not Bent to the penitentiary he sneaks around to their side and patches up a story of political persecution with which he defends he
Over at Springfield, 111., en investigation of the affairs of the sheriff's c-ffice has brought out the f.-ict th^t for several terms the occupants cf that office have been collecting illegal fes. The Assoeiated Press dispatch says that "several of these ehsrifft have been in a scr of partnership with the city police to obtain money from the county by the manipulation of tramps arrested by the police" and that "in order to stimulate the policemen ti activity ia this line cf enterprise they were paid 50 cents ahead to be lodged over night." It a notorious fact that the &heriff of Vigo county has had a targe revenue from "boarding" tramps and the like, the county payirg the bill. By all means lets have a workhouse.
After one or two of the Chicago boodlers had "pquealed" and the testi-mony-for the prosecution was all in, the defense began the introduction of its testimony. The first witness put on the stand was a millionaire pork packer, who testified that "Buck" McCarihy was ii man of.good reputation. The same strange feature was the noticeable one in the tally-sheet forgers trial, that is the appearance cf men of high commercial standing swearing to the good cheracterof mea of notoriously bad character. The only way of accounting for this is in the supposition that these wit nefctes had re tived or hoped to receive commercial favors from the accused or the friends of the rccused. Last winter, during the legislative investigation of tbe management of the benevolent institutions, tbe sanae thing was noticed first class business men testifying to the good reputation of those officers who bought the supplies for the-institutions, when all the state knew that these officials were guilty of receiving maggoty meat and oleo-nargarine, while paying for the best. Perj iry is a harsh word te use in referring to this kind of testimony, but it is the one that expressi the conviction of all honest men as to the character of the testimony.

tertoD. The examination of the viscar^of Su3ie Beck, the victim of the Rv. William Thomas AbbottjWest, by Dr. Lue^eking, chemical analyist at St. Lmi?, disclosed the fact thtot large quantities of arsenic had been administered—enough to csuse the death of many persona. This fact was immediately communicated to tbe authorities and the chief of police telegraphed to all the principal cities of the United States and Canada to arrest West for murder, describing him as "31 years of age, five feet six inches high, with dark auburn hair, dark brown eyes, fall, rquare face and chin, clean shaven stoops slightly when walking wears wine colored Spectacles dietws like a e'ergy--man." Sisie Beck was the daughter of poor parents, living near Ches terton, and was employed as a servant in the fimily of the Rev. Thamss West. Tbe wifi became suspicious of 8asie an she was discharged. See went to Chicago cn June 21, to whith city West soon fol lowed under pretense of taking medical treatment. They went to Su Louis, en tirely penniless, and passed their firs' night in a wheat field in the outskirts. Caaritable persons assisted them and he got work ss an electro plater. He bought a package of over two pounds of arsenic at a manufactory, to be used in his trade. His wife was taken eics with all the symptoms of cholera morbus and died July 18, the doctor giving a burial certificate. She was buried, but when the body was exhumed it was discovered that she had given prematnre birth to a child, which h-d been pluc?d in the ccffia with her. The next day West disaipenred and went home to his wife. A letter was received purporting to be from SiF.ie Bees, dated at Chicago two days after her death. West appeared at Chesterton, drzed and ill, and he fled as soon as he teamed th't he had been identified as Abbott. He took away all photographs of himself but ore. West's suspicious actions in St. L-iuis alone led to his detection. He left Chesterton the 20th, having borrowed mojey from unsuspectiug friends. A letter was received at Chesterton on Saturday from Toronto. Canad', in a hsndwiitiug that remarkably resembles West's, purpoitine to be fci George E. Men express themselves as being rean'y for any duty. Prominent people express themselves as being ready to pull aropson West if the opportunity oc cars. Services in West's old c'mrch were held yesterday, but very few sitended. The church has recjived a terrible set-bsck here. Many people have already ordered their names erased from the church book. From morning until night throngs of excited people were to be seen, and nothing is heard but "West," "West." Deputy Prosecuting Attorney John H. Couler had decided to send to Michigan City and Valparaiso asking for at least 500 men to make a search for West. He has looked ov^ the ground and decided that a search on a grand scale should be commenced. There is no difficulty in raising men Business is suspended, and a stranger stepping into Chesertont would thirfk war times hnd returned.
