OoTtrnor Gr undoubtedly repre f-.pnid ihe respectability of the Indiana Dtancriiry, and has (he support cf the Dtruccritic press which is not dominated by the Coy element. The evidence against Dr. Hirruon proved that he wa« unGtled in every way for the position to which he had been appointed, and which he used dishonestly for his personal aggrandizement. The thin coat of white wash which he received frrm the Democratic committee of the eenate was too •hit! to conceal the real character the man and the governor had no choice but to make the removal which wes ciamoronsly demanded. This of course has given deadly effense to the followers of Harrison and it remains to be keen which will come out of the contest victorious. By some mysterious law the policy of the party has always been shaped by its worst representatives and not by its worthiest, and the management of its affairs, whatevet tke opposition is eventually monopolizsd by them. In the present conflict it will b6 interesting to learn whether the result is destined to be an illustration of the law, of the survival of the fittest, or a plain, old fashioned Kilkenny cat fight.

There is not a mere useless creature upon the earth than a worn out politi cinn for whom bis party has no further use, and who fails to comprehend the sad fact that he has become superanuated. It is the fate of all flesh to wear out, neither mind nor body being proof against the protracted strain of sixty or seventy years, without giving evidence that strength and ability aie failing. It is strange that men cannot realize this, without waiting to have it impressed upon their minds by being forcibly set aside for younger and 1'bler men. The transaction of. public business differs from the management of private business ody in its greater extent and intricacy. COFFEE DRINKERS-GAMBLERS
Why the Cop Will Cost 91X0,000,000 Horn This fear Than Ever Before. NEW
YOBK, June
1.—Coffee
is higher
than it has ever been before for any considerable period. The cofiee situation, therefore, is interesting, not to say serious. Gambling in it just now is wilder than in any other produce. The p:ice has advanced 100 per cent, in a year, and, if the lowest and highest prices sre taken, 150 per cent. If the present situation continnes the cofiee drinkers in the United States wili pay $50,000,000 more for it than they paid in 1882 The rise in price i.a, therefore, equal to tbe imposition of about $1 on every man, woman and child (whether coffee drinkers or not), in the country. And if the movement upward continues, cofiee will psts out of the daily use of the people aud become a luxury. The cause of this startling advance in prica is three fold. The consumption has increased much more rapidly than the supply. In 1867 the consumption per capita was 4 77 pounds in 1873, ths first year after it was put on tbe free list, it was 9.67 in 1884, it was 9 50, and it has since in creased. The range cf prices has been for fsir Eio in 1860,13 cents in 1870, 10 to 11J csnts in 1880, 14 to 14J cerjts. May of last year, 9J cents. Now it is about 20 cents.
Another ciuse is the chance given for gambling by the necessary lack of trustworthy crop repoits. There is no concerted news gatherirg in inland Brazil.
The third canee is the estimated short neus of the crcp in Brazil, which has now just been gathered and wi'l begin to arrive about July 1. The Brazil crop is estimated at from 2,250,000 to 4,500,000 bafs The expectation a year ago was of a crop of from 5,000,000 to 6,000,000 bags. A shortage of 1,000,000 bags from Brazil will kepp prices where they now are. The crop in Java also is short. In Ceylon the ler disease baB reduced the production by at least one half. Thus the mpply of the very best coffee is sure to be smalle* for thh year than it has been for a generation.
To-day the highest figures are paid for Mysore coffee, and it is considered the best grown. Mysore is a part of upper British India, and the cultivation of the berry is entirely under European control. Thus far the leaf disease, which has spread such havoc in Java and Ceylon, has left British India alone but how long it will do so ia hard to say, All attempts to grapple with this disease have proved fruitless, and if it ever puts in an appearance in Brazil the day^ of coffee drinking will be numbered. There are those who believe that unless the leaf disease can he grappled with successfully it is only a question of time when a cup of coffee will he as great a luxury as a bottle of champagne.
Whether or not tbe price wi'l be maintained at so high a figuie will depend much on the future of speculation. The only coffee exchange in the country ia that in New York, which now has a great boom. The fever is higher than ever before in tbe history of the trade. There is more gambling in it than in any other grocery staple. The present uncertain outlook of the eupply has brought outsiders into the, speculation. Syndicates have be.-n often formed to bull the market, but in the majority of esses they have failed. The syndicate of 1885, after costing the consumer of coffee over $8/00,000, lost more than it made, an I brought down several large houses. The principal membors of that syndicate were Havre
luai uyuuiva'.c WCAC A_I.inc KUU Rio houses, with some Naw York firms jvo add^d. The present syndicate which is STATK NEWS booming prices is composed of New York,
they have made in tie ordinary run_ of
more attractive than etthor c-i'ton or
ttcue, the conaumeis in the chicf coffeedrinking countries will have to pay this year about $120,000,000 more lor the cup than they have ever paid in any previous year.

Gardens are now in a nice state of advancement to make them attractive to the cows, and about as much labor has been expended on them as to make a "Chrirtian, honest man" swear when they are destroyed. Complaints are still heard on all hands. A reporter was informed that about a half dozen cows were seen taking in Fourteenth street at an early hour theother morning. Where was Cow Catcher Kolsem and his order to enforce the o:dinance about that time? The cqwa that bnve been impounded and released switch their tails to the following parody:

MR. BLAINE.'
Hli Trip to Europe—Why He Wae Defeated in 1884. In bis talk with a New York World correspondent Mr. Blaine said, among otf.er things: "I am going abroad, and expect to be away abont a year. Mrs. Bla:neand my two daughters, Margaret and Hattie, will make up the party. I have engaged state-rooms on the German Lloyds' snip Ems, which sails June 8. We intend to speud considerable time in traveling through Great Britain. After traveling in England, we wili probably go to Scotland and Ireland. Then, I think, we shall spend a time in Germany, and after that take in France. By this time it will probably be getting so late in the year that Spain and I aly v. ill be comfortable. We intend ta make a tour through both of th-.-e countries, and
spend next winter aWg tie Mediterranean. We will prc bah:y make long visits in Rome and Gret'c, perhaps stop a brief time at Couitsnt'.-.opls, and visit the scenes of the rec- earthquakes in the Soulh of France Mid djoining portions of Italy. A year is sufficient to cover a great deal of ground without hurrying."
The correspondent asked. "How about tbe report, Mr. Blaine, that you contemplate, in some way, assisting Mr. Gladstone and the home rule party?" "That stol-y is pnrely imaginative, never had sach an idea in my mind. No, indee 1 I shall do nothing of the kind." "It has been widely published that your trip to Europe is for the benefit of your health Is that the case?" "It is very curious about that report I have been made sick by various news' papers at various times, and first and last have been made to have nearly every malady that I know of. I have had Bright's disease, a torpid liver, affection of the heart, paralysis, nervous debility, and, well, I don't know now, but, at any rate, a good many other diseases. As I said, it is curious ho™ these'stories start. I have, in fact, been singularly free from sickness. I have had hardly a sick day in my life—never any time serious and never had an organic trouble of any kind."
Mr. Blaise positively declined to talk about politics, except that while in conversation with the correspondent in his cottage at Bar Harbor, he said, In regard to the Burchard incident in 1S84. "I did not hear what he said. But the reporters heard it, and next day every paper in the country had it, of course. But as a matter of fact, I did not hear it myself. Way out in Indiana they had it that I had sr.id it. Oh, yes it went ail over the state that wsy. In a good many places in the West they had slips of paper printed, with 'Read What Mr. Blame Says' oa them, and distributed in front of the churches on Sunday. That is what loot me the election. You know, of comte, how close it was. Well, in New York city citjr alone it lost me several thousand votM—a good deal more than enough to h»« carried the state. I have never feii eare that I was not elected. Ii was assaiter of less than 600 votes to have turc®d New York theother way. Wben it is as close as that therecan be no certainty of the count.
