of forty-eight lodges of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen in New England, the middle and Atlantic states, held a grand union meeting yesterday afternoon in Temmany hall. Mavor Hewitt, being called upon for an address, expressed surprise at the invitation, as he had been led to believe, sinch the last mayoralty campaign, that the laboring classes were prejudiced against him ia a measure. H» was glad to learn differently. He was also surprised that he had been saked to address them on 8.mday, but had then reflected that the day was made for man, aid not man for the day further, that the nature of their employment precluded tbem from using other days.

Hon, Charles A. Dana spoke on the relations of capital end labor and against the indiscriminate importation of foreign labor. The time had come when tlis character of immigration to this counsry bad attracted the attention of the government with a view to restriction.

The grand maste: of the older, F. P. Saigent, gave a hietory of Iht order for fourteen years of its existence. It has a membership of nearly (seventeen thousand, ar.d has never engaged in a strike. Robbed Br Highwaymen.

Sunday night Frank AnthoDy was robbed of 3100 by highwaymen while near Staunton, in Clay county. He was drivin his buggy several miles west of Staunton when he was stopped by two men

who were mounted. One of them asked him what time it was. He took out his watch and while looking at it one of the men grabbed him and palled him out of the baggy. He fell to the ground and the two men began beating him. They went through his pockets and took all the valuables he possessed. He estimates his low at $100. He has no idea of the ideatity of the highwaymen, Anthony was formerly a deputy constable in this county and is well known in the city.

Unconsidered Trifles Ptck«! From the Wabaah Valley Exchange*. The jury at Vincennea acquitted exCity Treasuier Henry B. Duesterberg of tbe charge of embezzlement. The verdict was something of a surprise, bnt Duesterberg has the sympathy of a large part ol the community.

A fifteen-vear old boy, named A rby Hewitt, was kicked to death by a farm horse, which he tried to moant, at Danville, Ind. The boy had, two days before, come to live with Thomas Hewitt, bis uncle, three miles west of town, his father having died in Illinois only two weeks ago.

An epidemic of measles is prevalent in every township in day county, there being from 200 to 300 cases in Brszil. in localities the epidemic has been viru lent, though few, if any deaths have resulted therafrcm. Perry township, in the vicinity of Cory, hss also been seriously scourged with tcarlet fever, several deaths having occurred.

George E. Murray, alias Prof. George W. Nelson, formerly of Vincennes, where he got the better of many citizens, has been heard from at Paris, Ky., where he has just left that place with considerable money dishonestly gained. His motherin law, a Mrs. Matheny, who has been residing in Vincennes with her fami'y, and will leave with them on Monday for Paducah, her former home.

Chicago News: "The latest advices from Vermillion county are to the effect that those two distinguished statesmen, Joe Mann and Eugene Kiiabrough, have started a new daily Demccratic paper in Danville. This paper is to revolutionize Illinois politics and appreciate the mar ket value of frog saddles 50 per cent. We have great faith in the journalistic abilities of Mann & Kimbrough. The former is the liveliest stump speaker in the 31st district, and as for Kimbrough, he has the finest suit of red hair in Illinois."

Two young girls, members of prominent families in Vincennes, ran away from home and were met by two members of the Wilber Dramatic company. They were taken to a hotel and their night's lodging was paid for by tbe young men. They were arrested and sent to their homes, and confessed that they became acquainted with the young men while the company was playing in Vin cenrea. They were good looking and neatly dressed, seemed to realize what a rash step they had taken and willingly returned to their homes.

Special to the Ex press. Rockvii.le, May 10,—The wool season has come. Farmers come to town with their wagons well loaded and get good prices. Rockviile is one of the best wool markets in western Indiana. The Rev. O. Bebee and family will go to Colorsdo for the divine's health. A crowd of fishermen, J. H. Lindley, J. M. Nichols, H. B. Cord and Dr. W. H. Gillum, left this morning for Wite's Mill, fully equipped to have a good time and catch fish. They will be gone several days. What a struggle the finny t'ibe will have 1 Bella Moore has secured the opera house for fair week. She has appeared here numerous times and will be greeted by large audiences. —Nest week the driving park will favor with two day6 racing. The purses are .51,500 and some good horses will be present to make the amusement unusually interesting. Geo. Grimes will have his entire lot of horses here to take part, ar.d he has some good ones. Fast driving will be stopped by the police of Evansville, and the law piohibiting cruelty to animals will be strictly enforced.

Michael Rooney, aged 10 years, was drowned at the dam near Cr.iwfordsville yesterday morning, while bathing. His parents reside near Linden.

Judge D. P. Baldwin, of Logansport, has offered two prizes of $25 and £15 to the s'lidents of State university for the best two essays on Our State and Her Needs."

Saturday evening Al. Emerson, a well known citizen of Fort Wayne, attempted suicide by driving a pocket knife into his throat, partially severing his windpipe and gullet.

Superintendent Wyman, cf the Crawftudsville water works, has been sent to Kaneas, and E- S, Simpson has been as signed to bis poai ion. Xbe coroner was summor.cd and an inquest was held. The post nioriem examination showed that his lungs were completely decayed. While out diiving yesterday afternoon, the horse that Mrs. F. P. Yergin was driving became frightened and ran away. Mrs. Wczencraft was in the buggy with Mrs. Yergin, and both were thrown out, and badly bruised. The buggy was nearly demolished. The meetings at the Christian Church, conducted by Prof. Black, are still drawing large crowds. The church is hardly lane enough to accommodate the people. Neurly one hundred persons have united with the church. The Paris Reds and Clinton (Ind.) base ball clubs will play ball to-morrow afternoon at the base ball park in this city.

When the new ten dollar silver certificate first csme into circulation, M. D. 1'. MacClement*, of Evansville, wrote his name and address in full on one which passed through his hands, also addiner the date, October 30,1885. Oo Saturday he received a postal frcm Ferd. C. Archer, 08 West Twenty third street, New York, saying the $10 silver certificate had come into his hands.

At the recent meeting of the state board of health, it was shown that 25 to 30 per cent, of the poor houses of the state are in bad condition,:without ventilation and that the insane paupers are the greatest sufferers. Randolph county makes the best report and Montgomery the worst. It is without any modern conveniences, there are no bath tuba on the premises, no cisterns and all the laundry work is done with hard water.

Row Over Beecher Biographic.'. The anticipated row has broken ont over the biographies oi Henry Ward Beecher. Tbe closest friends of the dead pastor, even his relatives, are at odds in the matter. Rival armies of canvassing agents will soon spread themselves over the country, and the lives of listeners will be made miserable by tbe opposing talk.

Catholic Support of Temperance. The pastors of the Catholic churches throughout New England have strenuously endeavored of late to suppress intemperance and to promote the opposite virtue.
