W?hh the levival of business and the attendent building beosn, laboring men ought to be coining money. Yet there are strikes everywhere, enforced idleness, the miseries of poverty, most of which had originated in soiall Iritling dilliculiy that could have been surmounted by ether mear.s, and which is not worth what it cost?.

Rota, of geological taste?, when in the flesh, has indicated a locality known as Kaufman's hill. Where are all the spirits that used to congregate nightly at Pence's hall Now is a chacc? for them to convert the whole of Terre Haute. A little reliable instruction in regard to boring for gas in this region will do the work.

The Buffalo Express says that the president has always hated newspaper men. This feeling he loses no opportunity to display, both in ontright snubbing and rudeness, and in the fres expression of his opinions. Certain romantic correspondents are attempting to account for his animosity by manufecturing a story setting forth that Mrs. Cleveland's first and oniy love was a newspaper man. This would naturally exasperate Mr. Cleveland who has none of the airy grace, the versatility, the gaiety and brilliancy that are natural to the newspaper man. But he does not hate the quill drivers from jealousy, but on account of the truth they have told at his expense. And he never remembers that he furnished the facts himself, which, with nothing extenuated and naught set down in malice, did not present bim to the American people an ideal hc'.o, a knight without blame and above reproach. Ihe comments upon Mr. Cleveland have had a solid basis of truth, and it is the truth that hurts.

The comments of the Terre Haute papeie, except the Mail, on the shooting of Jesse Harmon by Callahan, have been in an apologetic tone. Xhey tell how Callahan has been greatly annoyed and exasperated by teamsters carrying off his baokets that Harmon and the boy Fisher jeered at him when he called on them to stop, eto. And recently the Express intimated that Mr. Harmon was a trifling, good-for-nothing sort of a man, as though it would not be much loss if he did [die. In that paper of Tuesday there is a paragraph repre een'irg Harmon as declaring before hie death that he and Callahan were the best of friends that he would not prosecute Callahan in case he' got well, and that "Callahan must have been in a fit of temper w' en he did tbe shooting." We presume the ante-mortem itatement of Mr. Harmon was taken before is death, and will bo used as evidence at the trial.

A man subject to such fits of tempor is dangerous to be a: large.—[Sullivan Demo cr&t.

The Express believes in the severest punishment of the law for crime of all kinds, and it has so frequently expressed its abhorenee of the free use of the pistol that it is thought by many to be "cranky" on that score. It has such a horror of this thing ot taking a humfln life that it doubts the right of twelve mcu on a jury to stop the breathing of a fellow man. But, as our Sullivan contemporary in (he above extract,as well as in other paragraphs in the same issue, intimates its fear that justice will not be rendered in this particular case, the Exprcts would assure it that were Callahan tiicd in its own county, at the home of Harmon, he could not be more fairly tried than ha will be here.

Terre Haute, if she is still undecided as her course in regard to gambling, in Sr,d plenty of sound precedents which more important cities have luroisl.fd. In New York Mayor Hewitt has declared war on tbe sporting fraternity •inr1- in Chicago Mayor Rache has already begun the work of shutting up the div-PS and enforcing the law. Even in Lafiyette, a city less important than Terre Heute, the good work has begun, aud the first official act tf the newly elected maycr was to give notice to the police that the laws against gambling must be enforced, and that all persons who engage in that business, or rent or uss or occupy rooms or buildings for that purpose, rr permit their premises to be so used, must be arreeted and brought to trial. This is plain and unmistakable English, in which there is no chance for mieunder ing or misconstruction. It also indicates that th9 newly elected mayor is no demagogue, seeking to curry favor by conciliating and shielding a class who thrive by violations of the law, which are quite as reprehensible as others that send offenders to jail and to the penitentiary. Mayor Kolsem objects to the title, "the Carter Harrison, of Terre Haute," and we!! may he co so. In the long incumbency of Harrison Chicago approached Sodom in the enormity of its iniquities. Low gamblinghelis increased and Multiplied, tbe larger and mors "reputable" onta carried on business with no cflort at concealment, find vice in other forms grew correspondingly bold. The reputation of the city became infamous throughout the couutry, and its disgrace was con jentrated in the person of its mayor. No .reputable man could afford or desire to b»r such a character unless he was willing to sacrifice it to greed for mosey and tho usurpation of power. If Mr. Roche, his successor, goes on as be has begun he will achieve a reputation the reverse of that borne by his predecessor.

In rome particulars the medical profession has kept pace with the rest of tho world. In other respects it i3 a long way behind it. Its recent investigation in microscopy and other branches relating to it 'are wanting the age c-f electricity and of general education the beliefs, in other directions, are a survival of the time when medicine was purely theoretical and largely mixed up with the black art, when heroic treatment prevailed and gruesome do6es were administered after which the patriot died or recovered as Heaven willed. Its prejudice in regard to advertising is tbe most marked remnant of the old regime, and this is determined by the construction which the code puts upon the term. Whitney and One of His LadyClerks. After several weeks' deliberation Secretary Whitney has decided that one of his lady clerks, who married during the usual thirty days' leave of absence granted government employes, is not legally entitled to pay after the date on which she changed her name. This decision saves the government the raagnifir cent sura of eleven dollsr?, which is the salary das tbe clerk frem the 26th of April, the day she got married.

The fAct that tbe young ia.iy had presumption enough to sen'i the ureal secretary of the Davy a card of icvifstion to her wedding is supposed to hive had more to do with her punishment than the technical point of signing her new name. Mr. Whitney is wiiiir:g to patronize his "hiyids" by presenting thorn with tur keys, and allowing them to r.sa grounds in the country, but he could not stand an attempt to establish any degree of social equality.

There is a great deal of whispering between official", and much that is not clear ana plain in the alleged crusade on thp cow. The policeman aro notentiiled to fees the marshal is, but the police take up the cows. The first night they were ciedited to the marshal the second night

says the owner can recover his cow any lime time before its sale at tbe expiration of a cer'ain time "by the order of th= maycr," oil* payment of the costs. In tjie cases of the first fotHj cows the mayor did not grant permission. Marshal Thompson states that be did not post the three notices as require:! by the ordinance. The marshal also states that hereafter these requirements Wili followed, so far as he is concerned.

This is then the culmination of the negotiation wbich began about six months ago, when Captain Btirke, through the department ot state, sought Minister Pbelpe' aid in secto-ing p« mission of the English government t?3 parade that country in arms. Tha reply of Mr. Phelps was that he had not pre sented the application because there was no precedent upon which sucli applies? tion could be granted in fact if there was a precedent at all it w*s to the contrary, because in 1884 Captaifc- Mike Whelan, of Detroit, had UisurceB8fnlly sought the same permissio n. To tho chairman of the management of that aSai r, Mayor Cooper of this city wrote, and succeeded in securing that interest. Col. 'i"hotoas P. Upon the receipt of this information. Captain Burke again wrote Minister Phelps, narrating the progrees of events and asking him to call upon the foreign secretary. The reply to this was tbe receipt yesterday morniDg of the following letter, which was the occasion of the cablegram above quoted:

Legation United States, London,Eng., April 27, 1837.—Captain J. F. I have the honor to be, sir, your obedient servaDt, IIknm White, tteoretriry of Legation "That," said Captain C'B^ke, "is an insult to every volunteer soldier of the Unitfd States. France, ^Belgium, Germany and Italy have agriied to receive us and when we approach the shores of Great Britain, it is demanded that we should cast off our unifoi me, hide the American flag, and creep tl trough Entr land like tramps. The refucal was because of American sympathy towards the Irish, it is the universal opirdon."

There is an angry and excited meeting of the Guard to-night, who aie in any thing but a pleasant mood. Tickets have been- sold to a large number otf excur sionist0, upon which tbe trip to ISngland is the stipulation. The trip will have to be abandoned unless something unforeseen turns up, and the temp?r of the company at the meeting seems to be to give not only England, *but Europ I, the shake.

PRINCIPAL AND AGENT— CONTRACT—

SIDERATIOK—SERVICES.

12S50. The United States Mortgage company vs. William Henderson et at. Marion 8. C. Affirmed. Mitchell, J.— When an agreement between a mortgage company and its agent authoriz-s it to require the agent to take up and personally pay to tbe company any defaulted interest coupons on any loan made by tbe sgent, and a mortgage taken by snch agent stipulated that if the mortgsgeor should fail to pay any interest coupon, the company might elect to declare the whole debt due and foreclose, if iteleclslo pursue the latter course, it must abide by such election, and cannot hold tbe agent liable. {2.) Nor can such company in snch case recover from the agent interest accruing subsequent to the' decree of foreclosure. (3) In a suit by such sgent against the company for services, the company, by way of set-ofl alleging that in settlement with the agent be had executed notes, in order that snch a compromise may constitute a sufficient consideration for the notes, there must have been actusl bona fHe claim founded upon a colorable right about which there was room for honest doubt and actual dispute. (4.) Where the contract, between such agent and the company relates exclusively to losing money on bonds and mortgage*, and collecting moneys payable on loans made, the agent ia entitled to compensation for legal services in foreclosures, leoking after repairs, rents, taxes and insurance, vWi done at the instance and request of tha company.
