I., S. BRIGGS,
Thete its one thing that may be safoly set down as a certainty, and that is that lite within the natural gas belt. Although the recent effort did not result in a gas find, yet it demonstrated the fact that natural gas can be found right here.
The above is taken from an Indiana newspaper. The nams ol tbe town appea where the dash now is. It is a a 20cd form and the Express suggests that it be adopted by all Indiana exchanges.
The Express publishes the following from tho Indianapolis News and remarks that nothing more' p?rtinent to Tcrro Haute could be S3id:
With otrergera coming ir.te the city, as they will come this summer, on bnsinese and pleasure bent, there should be special effort, if nocl be, for an enforcement of law. Nothing npfr.hs so well for a e'ty or offers such inducements to investors as the spectacle ot a rigid ard just onforcement of law. In Fuch communities poople williDgly bay property and make investments.
The Republican party in this city, in the selection of its candidates, has done its whole duty. Every man on the ticket is, in every wsj', worthy of the support of tlio voters who favor the enforcement of fie laws and are favorable to good government. The result of the ele lien will prove whether the demand f.ir bel'.pr government is the ill-tempered fault, finding of chronic growlers, who mn?t have a bane of contention, or the bom-el protest of honest men. Words are lo be emphasized to-day by hard work in a good cause.

hind those in which the law is appealed to, and its decisions accepted, and they will need many decades of educating and enlightening before they can stand upon an equality with others that have outstripped them.
I want to say to thoss citizens I have not seen'in this campaign, and to those who do not know me, that as the question of pnblio gambling has become a prominent one, I desire it to be distinctly understood that so far as in the power of the mayor the law will be rigidly enforced to put an end to it in this city if am elected,
S. BEIGGS.
It is a .'-ratifying fact that in nearly every city where an effort is made to suppress gambling that the Republican party is en the right side. The new mayor of Chicago i3 engaged in it and has the hearty support of the newspapers of all parties. In Indianapolis gambling was brought to an end the day the Republicans were put in the majority on tho police board. In Cincinnati the Republican mayor and police board are doing the game thing. The Commercial Gazette says:
A surprising lininber of persons do not teem to know what to rrake of a police board and mayor and chief of police who do not make secret arrangements to tolerate some of tbe forms of gambling that ere not lawful.
One would suppose from the monrnful disturbance going on that one of the customs of the country was being ruthlessly tremp'.ed npon by those who are clothed in a little brief authority. However, as we understand the position of the authorities, it is clear and clean, and will Btand a hard rub and high polish.
Now, as the campaign is about over, the Express with pride refers to the fact that it has engaged in no personal attacks. It has justly opposed certain candidates whose public relations and official acts declared their unfitness to hold office. The Express was urged to make certain charges, well sustained too, that were calculated to create opposition among classes of our citiians, such as knew-nothingism, rebel sympathy, etc. bnt it has not sought to develop race or other prejudices. If could have shown that one candidate plead guilty to whipping his aged fother-in-law, another's bad faith with a tenant. The Express is aware that such onslaughts often prove to be boomerangs and that the man who caters to prejudice rather than reason, is the loEer in the long run as he should be. The fact is that the people of this city know which men ought to be elected and if there is a fnll vote the best men will be elected. The only danger is that the voters who believe in clean things will not be out in force, whereas the gamblers and boodlers will struggle all day becacse their livelihood depends on tbe success of the Democratic ticket.
The extent of the impetus which the Indiana boom will give to the business'cf the entire country can hardly be estimated. In towns where gas has bsen struck there has already been a demand for hundreds of tone of iroiMpiping, thirteen miles of mains hp.ve bson ordered for Anderson alone, and in other towns there will be a proportionate supply required. This will stimulate the mining interest of the country, blast furnaces and foundrys everywhere will be crowded to fill orders. There will bs employment and good wages for every man and boy who wants to work, not only in the mining and manufacturing centers but in the smaller towns where the gas supply is yet to be utilized. Manufactories will ba removed to the West, where many corporations have already effsred free land as an additional inducement. For several years Indiana has been a pivotal state in poliitics. She will henceforth be •f equal importance as a manufacturing state. Her coal fields are inexhaustible, and is believed that her gas supply will prove equally rich and lasting. Then a3 if the uncoined wealth that lies below tho surface were not enough, her agricultural products are of themselves sufficient to enrich her people. Above the coal fields are wheat fields and corn fields, equally prolific, and destined to reward the industrious farmer a hundred fold. Indiana wheat brings the highest prices in the Eastern markets. In the manufacture of flour the cheap fuel of Torro Haute makes her already able to compete with Minneapolis and her great water power. Indiana horses are already in demand and in raising the finer breeds the grezing regions of the state are but little behind tho finnans blue-grass districts of Kentucky. Real estate every where has advanced greatly. In Marion, Kokomo and other towns where ticre are gas wells it has quadrupled in value. Millions of Eastern capita! has been airer.dy invested by men who are too shrewd and far-sighted to be deceived by external indications. The state has within the past three months made &n unparalleled advance toward greatness and prosperity, and its citizsns, now, have only to make the utmost of their opportunity.
Never were the cranky notions of the Indianapolis News more imphatically pronounced, than when it asserts that the fully exposed shirt front of masculina fnll dress adds to the beauty of an audience. To!the thoughtful mind it is infiuitoly more snggeitivs of an array of tombstones.
Gum chewing is on the increase among Indianapolis womec, and is not on tho decline is Terre Haute. One devout worshiper in anew spring bonnet, chewed all daring the evening service at cne of the city churchw, last Bunday, not stopping long enough to say "amen."

A PROFESSOR'S OPiNION.
Tlie
logliib Tiew of Why Ireland Should Not Kuve Home Rale. ITHACA, N. Y., April 30.—In his lecture before the professors and students at Cornell university, yesterday, on "Kscent Changes of English Polity," Professor Goldwin Smith, the English historian, replied to tho question, "Why should not Ireland have home rule?" as follows: "We English are not a confederation, and you cannot make us a confederation without totally altering the British constitution, without doing away with the sovereign power of parliament, and without making Scotland, Ireland and Wales each a state. Even if so fundamental a revolution (should be thought of, the component parts of the United Kingdom would not be fit/for federal union. That requires a group of equally powerful states, and by suf.li confederation yon would have Ireland, Scotland and Wales in cabal s^ainst England." Prof. Smith advised his hearers to guard against the tone and tendency of the American press, which, he said, wss not eo impartial as the liberal press in Europe. He regarded the outlook for tlio British cation as not very bright. People begin tu talk of terrible things ioafmueii ts the English nation has sliddeii unconseionaly into democracy without revising her constitution, and with no safeguards. Political wisdom seems now at low ebb and the traditional good sense of tbe English people can only bo looked to for tiding the ship of state through the present crisis.

HERE AND THERE.
The Salvation Army l«It their barracks on east Main street Sunday and marcked wst to Sixth street where they turned and retraced their steps to the barracks. At Sixth street a large crowd collected. Some indulged in jeers while others quietly took in the situation. As they were returning Mrs. Birington waa driving west on Main street. The flying flags and banners, tbe beating of tte drum, shaking of tambourines and general pandemonium frightened Mrs. Biviogton'a horse. It became unmanageable and ran away. The lady was thrown from the carriage into the street. She received a severe fall but fortunately was but hlightly injured. The horse ran a number of squares and was finally stopped without any injury to itself or to the carriage.
The Salvationists did not attempt to return to their south Fourth street barracks «3 thev had intended. The board of health's order put an end to the move. Had they attempted to reopen, they would promptly have been *j?cted from tho building by a patrolman who was detailed for that duty. Three boards nailed across the front gateway are lettered ia chalk: "Closed. The devil has been cast out, Hallelujah." The barracks were disinfected by order of the board of health. Mrs. Wahler, who owns the building, disclaims all knowledge of the persons who put the-inscriptions on the door.
There was a panorama on exhibition for a short space of lime Sunday evening in a room in the Beach block on Sixth and Main streets. The curtains were drawn down and with the light within -formed good BCieen upon which shadows were projected. Between the light and window sat a lady and gentleman. Every movement wes portrayed on the curtain. Some passer by made the dir. covery, and stopped lo look at the pantocaine performance. Others stopped and it was but a short time until the assemblage that lined the opposite side of the street numbered fully fifty, and was increasing constantly. A patrolman happened along and perceiving at a glance the situation, stepped across the street into the bnilding and informed the performers that their movements could be seen by a large crowd in the^ street. The light was turned lower at which the crowd gave a campaign veil, which broke the stillness of the Sabbath even irg and the amusing performance came to an abrupt ending.
Loud complaints are being heard from lot owners in the old cemetery, Wood' lawn. There are many forest trees gr-wing in the grounds, among them be inp the c-aks which ara the most conspicuous. Of late a very large number of these for some reason or other have be?a cut down, and the stumps remain to mark the plsce where they stood The pines and cedars are given tbe preference and the forest trees are disap* pearing quite rapidly. Il is well known that the evergreen species trees do not thrive well in our sandy soil. The gi ants of the forest are more beautiful than the evergreens of st tin led growth that are succeeding them.
Sanitary Officer Bodewin has been re inforced by two assistants, Messrs. Hall and Pierce. These officers were em ployed by the police board at the recommendation of the board of health. The time for thorough cleaning up of yards, alleys and streets has arrived, and the health board are desirous that it shall take place at once. A thorough examination lies bsen entered upon and wherever netded notices will be left to clean up and that it should take place immediately. If uot complaints will ba filed against the persons notified for failure to eoinply with the order.
Contractors when notified that lights are not kept burning on obstructions dur iug the entire night, complain that boys ooniinually break the globes out of the lanterns and put out the lights. They state that this is frequently the case and that tht-y are put lo considerable expense to replace toe globes. In many instances the lanterns are stolen and have to be replaced with new ones. Red lights on obetructions in the street are good targets upon which to practioe marksmanship and tho arrest of some of the mischievous youths would be a good example by which to put stop to the practice. ..iunday it was discovered that all the plate glass windows on the north side of Main street, between Third and Fifth streets, had beeu scratched. It is supposed it was done during Saturday night by some miscreant who either nsed a giaes cutter or a diamond. Some of the windows are quite badly scratched, and all are more or less damaged. There is no clue to the vandal and should he be detected he wonld be severely dealt with. No motive can be assigned for the act except pure deviltry.
Yesterday waa the time set for hearing further arguments in lha Rigler will case upon tho motion made by the dt fenso for a new trial. Judge Allen, however, was not on the bench and there was nothing done in the matter. It is staled by the attorneys in tbe case that argument will ba proceeded with as soou as Judge Allen can arrange to hear it. it is stated that there is strong indications that the judee will grant a new trial.
