Prof. De Mgttc's Lecturc.

To the Editor of tho Express. SIR:—I have carefully looked up the word "sound" in Webster, and nowhere, either as a noun, an adjective, a verb or an adverb, do I find any reference, director indirect, to Martin Luther or the Koman Catholic Church. In view oi Pi of. De Motte's lecture in the High school lecture course last Friday evening. I regard my discovery as being of more than common importance. I noticc the Gazette connects Luther with sound by the fact, undisputed I believe, tliat Luther had a voice. One of the definitions

VVeOBter gives of sound is "to make a noise." When Luther used his voice he made a noise. Noise is sound, therefore, a lecture on sound and a lecture on Luther are synonymous terms and there can be no mistafee about it.

The Roman Catholic Church is connected with 8«und by indisputable and incontrovertible ties. The Church has a peculiarity of filling its priesthood with men who have voices and when they make noise, which is sound. They also use organs as part of their religious exercises. These organs make noise, which Webster again converts into "sound."

The people of Terre Haut 'should felicitate themselves oo having their attention called to this most Fpeculiar phenomenon by Prof. De Motte. It was worth the price of a whole series of lectures to have this question demonstrated so clearly and with such convincing logic by an eloquent and a learned gentleman.

I presume Prof. Byere himself is satisfied now that sound is not a scientific question but a religious question. The text books in use to-day are all wrong. What wonderful strides "progress" is really making in this nineteenth century of enlightenment pnd liberalism.

I await the next High school lecture with keen anticipation. My interest will be anxiously aroused until I discover, as the lecturer nnfo'.ds his argument, whether a lecture on "Oliver Cromwell" ir going to be a review of the progress of the colored race since the war or a summary of arguments against protective tariff. SITA.

TERRE HACTE, December 6.

PBOF. JOHN B. DtMOTTE ON CATAKRH. In his lecture, "The Path Between Mind and Matter," at the Congregational Church in this city on Friday evening last, referring to the impairment of the voice by catarrh o* the resonant passages of the head, gave some timely hints to our yc ung people on the importance of guarding themselves against the disease by seasonable protection and the observance of proper hygiene. We hope his kindly suggestions will be adopted by those who heard thee. To some, however, the advise comes too late to avoid the disease, they already have it* presence ud are, per*

PROMPT PAYMENT.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.. Dec. 6, 1S8S. Received from the Equitable Life Insurance Society of New York—through the local agency of said company Riddle, Hamilton & Company—six thousand nine hundred and twenty two 84-100 doll irs, in payment of a policy issued to my late brother Robert S. Cox, by the Equitable a few years since. The original policy was for $5 000, and $1,922 84-100 added as dividends. The large dividends paid, and the prompt settlement of ali claime—the proofs of death in this case were forwarded only one week ago,—demonstrates fully the claim for the Equitable to be the leading Life Insurance Company in the world.

slight ailment and will never become serious. Do not be deceived. Give it prompt attention. Seek the best advice obtainable. Carefully investigate for yourselves the nature, cause, and treatment of diseate, and do /iot rely on the specious statements and claims of some tramp theorist, or patent medicine humbug. ID this connection it is but just to our fellow-townsman, Dr. Hollingsworth, to say, that in our judgement, no more scientific and constitutional treatment of the subject has ever been published than that contained in his treatise.

Attention of our readers is directed to the advertisement of the Security Corset elsewhere in our columns. This corset has become immensely popular with the ladies wherever introduced, and is having a very extensive sale. This corset— Style W.—is bound with genuine whalehone of the finest quality, cut in small strips, each strip having a Woven or braided covering. These strips are inserted in sections, etch scction having the security device, as shown in cut, which prevents the bone from pushing through. The Security Corset requires no "breaking in," and adapts itself to tbe form of the wearer in the most trying position. Style W is made in fine sateen, silk stitched in the most approved shape, and can be furnished in various colors For stout ladies a genuine whalebone corset is far preferable to any other Etyle. Style is made in best- contil, white or drab, boned with superior horn stripe?, each section having the security device.
