THE RAILROADS.

Hero aal Therr, of InttrrsUag Hema.

Mr. J. E. Kendall at C.-awfonlsville. President W. McKeen was in Indianapolis yesterday, looking after the Vandalia iatfrasls in the depot. —'Most of the freight trains throughout the Vandalia Bjsiem are running "double." This indicates verj marked increase in business.

Mr. H. W. Davy, engineer on the Vsndalia, is visiting friends in Knightstown while his engine is undergoing repairs in the sbops here.

Colonel Woolsey, oi tb? Van, has frequent applications from various roads in the West for employes in the train dispatching depaitment. This may be taken as an evidence of Colonel Wooiuey's popularity.

The Vandi-.lia people are now handling immense quantities of coal—probably the greatest business io that direction in the history of the road. It is said that 400 cars of coal, daily, are being handled by the company.

Bee line, says that the road will this year handle more live ttoek than a.iy year cince 1881. On the entire system he says fully 25,000 cars of live stcck have been handled, and at no time in the last three months haa the company had cars sufficent to supply the demand for this class of traffic. Within the last week, at the Indianapolis stock yards, stock for shipment east has been turned over to their competitors.

Says tho Indianapolis Journal: "Recent developments show that the Chicago iS Eistern Illinois is moving to secure a road inta St. Louis. The building of an ext&nsion from Slidell to Tuscola and then later on to Mattoon does not by any means cover the programme. The Journal has information that the C. & E. I. have parties quietly looking after a charter for right, of way from Mattoon to St. Louis, which has practically dropped out of sight, and further it is intimated that the I., B. & W.,"or the Ccrbin syndicate are interested in this enterprise, and that after the I., B. A W. is reorganized they will show their hinds. It is stated that the I., & W., in connection with the C. & E. I., could, through the proposed extension, secure shorter lines between Chicago and St. Louis and between Indianapolis and St. Louis, than are some of the lines now in existence. The proposition is to ma^e the road as near an air line from Mattoon to St. Louis as possible, and it is said that such a road can be built at a

cost per mile to make the bonded debt, first days use. Marvelous cures resting on the extension from Slidell to Trea'ise and $2 00 trial bottle free St. Louis quite small as compared with Fit cases. For the relief and cure of the inflammation and congestion called "a cold in the head" there is more potency in Eiy]s Cream Balm than in anything else it is possible to prescribe. This preparation has for years past been making a brilliant success as a remedy-for cold in the head, catarrh and hay fever. Used in the initial stages of these complaints Cream Balm prevents any serious development of the symptoms, while almost numberless cases are on record of radical cures of chronic catarrh and hay fever after all other modes of treatment have proved of no avail.
