For a day oi two during the past week the weather put in an appearance of winter, and the people hurried along th$ streets in a vigorous" sort of way as though they meant to enjoy the bracing atmosphere. Many who were upon the streets availed themselves of the opportunity to drop into the "White Front" grocery and give their orders for supplies from the oceans of fruits, vegetables and fancy goods there on display.

Goodman & Co. report bigger sales in all kinds of overcoats this winter than they ever have experienced before. They attriW a-their large sales in that particular ifaaS to the large stock and very nobbi*^jfc"les they are able to show at lower prr Qkhan some small dealers can buy suc/^^ods for.

VIGO AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A Statement of the Financial Condition uf the A-soci .tion. At the annual meeting of the Vigo Agricultural society the secret try, Mr. C. C. Oakey, submitted a report of the condition of the society of which a synopsis is here given. The board of di rectors at the beginning of the year, had no money in the treasury, but had a debt of $2,825.80 to pay or refund, beside a number of bills amounting to $700. The opening of a new road west of the fair ground made it necessary to tear down and rebuild the fences an4 st ills. The county commissioners built the fence around the grounds (^hicb belong to the county) and loaned the society $3,500 for five years which paid off th overdue notes and bills. The socitty also borrowed $1,000 from the trustees of Rose Orphan Home to build the new stalls required. Since the spring thi directors have made improvement? and repairs amounting to $3,500, but the total improvements by the Agricultural Society, Trot'inv Association and County aggregate $10,246.00, a summary of which is as follows Twelve thousand feet of fence....$ 2,464 98 Judges'and distance stands 265 00 Ninety box stalls 1,725 00 One hondred open stalls 940 00 Ladies' wale 250 00 Dining room and kitoben 151 07 Three ticket offices 100 00 Pens, painting, whitewashing, and sundry repairs 700 00 Track machine 150 00 Alile track 8,500 00

Total improvements for 1886... $10,246 00 ihe annual fair had flattering p.ospects. There were more exhibitors and exhibits, and a finer exhibition than at the previous very fine fair, but stormy weather cut off the attendance and profit. The receipts and credits for 1886 were $12,272 58 the disbursements and debits, $12,446.51 the deficit is $177.03.

ington special to the San s»ys: One of the most striking passages in tho annual report of Commissioner J. D. O. Atkins, which has just been printed, shows the working* of an Indian landed aristocracy under the present tribal system of holding reservations. It appears that the chief cultivation of the tribal lands is done by a few rich and enterprising red men, who pocket all the proceeds ana pay no rent to the tribe as a whole. Of, coarse, their plea is that if any other members of the tribe choose to till their lands, they are at liberty to do so bat it appears thatin thelndian territory, where some very large aggregate crops are raised on landis held in common by partly civilized tribes, the wealthier ana more influential Indians have monopolized the best lands, and much more than would be their t-hare under an equal division in severalty. Commissioner AkiLS, accordingly, points ont the present system of land tenure among the red men is working veay badly, and that the government ought to intervene and divide the land held in the Indian Territory •into lots of 160 acres for. each head of a family and half as much for ench minor child. The present system of Indian land holding is very imperfect and unwise, and that congress should promptly substitute one which would be better for both the red men and the white.

Total 2,07i The number of exhibitors was 272, of whom 184 wer. from Vigo county, thirtyone from Edgar county, and fifty-seven from Parke, wullivan and other counties, again of thirty-three exhibitors and 170 exhibits over the preceding year. The totsl receipts at the fair were $4,345.25, and the disbursements for premiums and expenses, S4.5S5.45, showing a deficit en the fair of $240.20.

Police or Burglars.

Queer communications often times find their way to the editorial tables of. a newspaper office. Ac an example the following which was received yesterday may be offered:

Home borglar was prowling aronnd P. C. Pogh's houM lata night before last. Ha mad* three vain attempts to enter, bat was seared away three tiaes. The polios will do well to keep oa the lookout dowa in that neighoorhood for they have bees esen several times.

Much Adoo Abont Nothing. About 7:15 o'clock last evening a telephone message was received at police headquarters, as follows:

Send the wagon to 1007 Elm street. A fight is going on and there is liable to be riot, dend several officers.

The wagon, carrying Officers Fox, Hall, Rac'uglen, Reisman and Butler, was sent at once to the locality named. Nothing was found, other than a_ report that one John Beard and a certain Mr. James Cox had been fighiing around the whole neighborhood and creating a general furore. Beard had disappeared. It appears that Beard and his wife had been stopping at Cox's hoase and Cox had cor eluded that he could keep them no longer. He accordingly took Mrs. Beard to her father-in-law's residence in the neighborhood. Beard had, in the meanwhile, failed to put in an appearance for |several days, having had a fight with his wife. When he found that his family had been evicted from Cox's premises he went hunting for Cox, and found him, with the above-stated results. He was found lxte last evening, by Officers Fox and Rinehart, at Sam Brown's dive, in the west end, and sent to jail.

Home Circle.

T11 Home Circle met at the Gazette counting room last evening and electsd officers for the ensuing year. All of the old officers were el.ected with the exception of Mr. M. A. Smith, of the ex ecutive committee, who will not be here this winter. Several new names were added to the list of members. The first dance will probably be given Thanksgiving eve. Mr. G. A. Pugh was elected in place of Mr. M. A. Smith.

His plan of working was to collect debts, put the money in his pocket, and report totbefirm that he had granted the debtor an extension of credit.
