Elizabeth B. Whelan died at her tome near New Goshen, Ind., September 21. Deceased was a daughter of Thomas and Mary O'Hara, and was born in Maryland, February 2d, 1806. When 3 years old, Bhe Moved with her parents to Kentucky. There she was married to John N. Whelan. In 1831 they moved to Illinois, living in Randolph and Edgar eountiee. In 1838 they purchased a farm in Indiana, to which place they then removed, and where she lived until her" death. While yet young woman, she was left a widow with nine small children, the oldest being but 12 years old. Although in a new coun try and in very limited circumstances, she would not consent to be parted from sny of her children, but, with true motherly love and a will that would not despair, she brought them all up tc honorable manhood and womanhood, Through the mysterieB of Providence, two children remained in the home with her to lighten the cares and increase the comforts of her declining yeais. In early life she became a member of the Catholie Church, in which profession she was strong, faithful and devoted. Her Christian life shed its good influence upon all around her, and is worthy of imitation. Her kindness and attention to the sick and her many deeds of char ity will long be remembered. Her modest and eocial disposition drew her many friends who deeply mourn hw departure but nowhere will sKe ba missed like in the home circle. Death entered the home and took

A Glimpse of Heaven,

Boston Herald. Miss Melinda Bailey, a young unmarried lady, has been for some time a resident in the family of Ralph Sargent, at what is known as the "Lower Comer," nearly half way between Merrimac and Amesbury. Since her residence with Mr. Sargent,.Miss Bailey, who had just lost her mother, whose nurse she had been through a long and lingering sicks, has been very ill from complete nervous prostration, and has been under the charge of a physician in Ames bury, who considered her situation as extremely critical. Last Thursday, the Haverhill Gazette says, she appeared to grow rapidly woise, and at_ her request a clergyman was sent for, with whom she conversed for some time, appearing per fectly conscious of her critical condition Soon after she grew rapidly weaker, apd at last lay peacefully back on her bed, and to all appearances seemed to be dead. As the doctor lived nearly six miles off, and her dissolution wai somewhat expected, no attempt was made to summon medical aid. The litubs grew stiff, and except for the fact that the flesh retained its natural color to some extent, there was no unusual appearance. After the body had lain in this state for some time, neighbors coming in, the grave clothes were brought out and preparation made to prepare for the last sad rites. Soon a slight perspiration broke out on the body, and with a long-drawn respiration the vital spark, fchich seemingly had long been exhausted, flamed up once more, and, to the surprise^nd horror of those gathered there, the Supposed corpse sat up in her bed and surveyed with half-dazed eyes the moaners gathered around.

According to one of the neighbors the first word uttered by any of the party came from the dead-alive, who, with tremulous accents, said: "Ah! heaven is beautiful place, and I should have been so happy to have staid there, but I so longed to see my brother and sister once more."' As soon as possible the room was cleared of the wondering spectators and the doctor sopt for, who found his patient rather better than on his previous visit the day before, and since that time she* has, to all appearances, steadily im proved. During the last two or three days Miss Bailey has been somewh§f deranged. ... i.

Nearly all the stables at Lexington will be taken to St. Louis for the races next week, and from there many will come here. Messrs. Regan and Jeflers will be at the St. Louis meeting to look after the interests of the races at our track. Mr. Pepper, of Lexington, owner af Orm and, has promised to bring the stallieu here. The men with the excursion advertising bills are now ont along the lines of the railroads. ...

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Something Mysterious that 1b Und mining the Nation. A E-velation Importance.

There is no need in disguising the fact that we as people are growing weaker every day. Men and women whd were formerly stalwart rre becoming less strong and Iras active. An unaccountable feeling of lassitude, an uncertain appetite, bad breath, less vigor, occasional headaches, and above all inability to sleep well and rest well all these sod many more symptoms are the sure indications of absolute, physical breaking down. If does not come at once it is often- a slow process. Indeed, it is so gradual that it is often unnoticed until it becomes too late to arrest its couree. Then insomnia and nervous dibility set in, followed by softning of the brain, insanity or death. This is an exceedingly important subject and demands the

eu st

earnest and careful attention. But what causes this terrible state of affairs? Various things. The habits of life the competition of business, innumerable excesses. The nerve force becomes lost, the energy gone and disease and death set iB.

The presence of these evils being apparent the great and vital question is "How can they be. avoided or beingupon jis, how driven away By toning the system. By building up wht-re disease is tearing down. But how By using a pure, gentle, yet efficient mediciae and for this purpose nothing eqnals or has equaled Volina Cordial. This wonderful compound is fast making a revolution in the health and spirits of the community and is unquestionably in the front rank of modern medicines. It is a purely vegetable preparation, pleasant to the taste and wonderful in its results.

It is seldom that weadvke'any definite course of action, but the need of the hum£n race is so great its danger so imm nent and the relief so easy that we cai not refrain from directing careful atten tion to these solemn truths and urge th importance of avoiding impending disss ter at once.

A well-known public man at Washington, in conversation with the writer on this subject said. "Government sta tietica show a tremendous falling ofl'in the vital.force of the nation and a^spe cial increase of those diseases arising from nervous exhaustion. Whatever its canfes may be the fact remainH that debility and loss of energy are prevalent and increasing, and they must be checked if we 8ie to hope for long life or health as a people."

when you demand a Benson's Capcine Plaster of a druggist, to expect to receive one. Yet there art, we regret to say, a few druggists of the Cheap John variety who will tiy to persuade you to accept some worthless substitute with a similar •sounding name, such as "Capsicin," "Capsicum," "Capucin," "Capsicine," etc., perfixed sometimes with the name "Burton" or "Benton." Cheap John will offer you one of these wretched imitations for half the price of the genuine, as he can well afford to do it, its real value being nothing, and its cos.t but little more. Benson's are the only porous plasters that can be depended npon to cure every ailment subject to external treatement Thfey are prompt, sure and thorough.
