The Faneritl of tbo Mnrdewd Operator at Marshall Ye.terday. Special to the Express.

Marshall,

111., September 14.—The

funeral of'Powers occurred this morning at 9 o'clock. It was undoubtedly the largest ever in Marshall. Nearly all the business houses closed their doors on account of the funeral. There is nothing new in regard to the murderers- The bloodhounds proved of no service, owing to the fact that the tracks were old and it had rained after they were made. The hounds were sent back" to Olney. Detectives are still at work on the case, and are following several clues.

was oruelly assassinated'while at his poBt of duty* It is hard to realize that this simple yet terrible announcement involves an iternal earthly separation from this most gehial companion and gentleman, our beloved friend and member of this clnb. Yet, 'tis too true and while language is powerless to express our horror and amazement at his untimely fate, yefc we deem it but meet and fitting to bear humble testimony to his worth and goodness. We knew him well as a member, a friend and an associate. We knew him bb a sunny-natured gentleman—happy in temper, sparkling in art, brilliant in repartee, a genial companion, an earnest friend, kindly and generous in impulse, pure in heart, irreproachable in morals, an ornament to manhood, his life as spotless as a s.ar, and it is unspeakably sad that in the early morning of his manhood, with life^ all before him, the future roseate with promise, he should be so ruthlessly removed. And while we folly appreciate that empty words will not gild a griei like this, yet to his sorrowing relatives we extend onr earnest sympathy, and hope that as the shadow of his familiar form receceds into the infinite reaches of eternity, they may see him, though with strained and tearful eyes, pass, through th*1 gates ajar and hear the last faint sounds of a happy "good bye" as it fades on the echeless shore.
