CITY IN BRIEF.

Bern ember this is the opening day of Her*' special sale of parasols and sun umbrellas.

The stockholders of the pleasure steamer Juniatta are having anew boiler made at Clift & Sons' and will soon have their boat ready far pleasure trips.

Business about the court house is very quiet. The Circuit court is not in session, the Superior court is grinding away at unimportant oases, and the county officers have very little to do.

The work of rebuilding the fence on the north, south and west sides of the fair grounds began yesterday. A new judge's stand, anew distance stand and a stand for the reporters will also be erected.

The police arrested a large number of tramps last night, thinking, perhaps, to find several men who brutally treated a boy in a box car Monday night. They succeeded in finding two who were with the ruffians, but not those who committed the deed.

a hoop factory. They are looking for a location to establish works, and to that end Mr. Beck will visit Terre Haute in a few days. They desire to form a stock company.

Among the tramps arrested last night was one who had a pair of gold-plated bracelets, several pins and a watch in his possession, evidently stolen from some house where he afoppad to beg. He has been placed in jail, and will be held several days and the matter investigated.

Fifty-eight names have been secured for the new military company. A meeting will be held Monday night, at which officers will be elected, and the company organized. On Tuesday night the com pany will be mustered into service. It is thought that about seventy will be sworn in.

A constable from Shelbyville, Ind., is in the city looking for Press Cochran, who is wanted for the murder of F. M. Ander son. The murder was committed ii saloon in that town Tuesday noon, grew out of a game of billards. Cochran escaped into the woods. Officers have been sent in every direction to search for him, and they are stimulated by a large reward.

At Indianapolis the fire department has a man stationed in the tower of the court house. By the aid of a glass he is able to locale fires and "key-in" alarms from his elevated position. It is said that he turns in half the fire alarms. Councilman Somes, chairman of the fire committee, is of the opinion that it would be a good idea for Terre Haute to have a look-out station in the tower of the new court hoase.

The case of Geo. Hobmeyer vs. the E T. H. railway, damages, on trial in the Superior court, has resulted in a Verdict for defendant. The plaintiff brought suit before Justice Lockman to Tecover the value of a cow killed on the railway. The defendant rested at the conclusion of the plaintiffs testimony in the justice's court, and a verdict for the plaintiff was returned, awarding liim $50. An appeal was taken to the Superior court by defendent, with the above result.

The fire committee of the council visited "Rotten Sow," on north Third street, yesterday. Mrs. Biley refuses to tear her house down. She says she has worked hard for the property, and cannot afford to have it destroyed. The committee argued with her, but she would not yield. The committee is also having trouble with Mrs. Lundy, who owns the bouse north of Mrs. Biley's. Both houses will probably be rased, the latter build ing to-morrow.

The council committee on public improvements, to whom was referred the matter of new police headquarters, imported at the meeting Tuesday night that Clift, Williams & Co., were at work on plans and would submit them at the next meeting. Further time was granted the committee. It is proposed to tear away the old fire traps west of the market house, and erect a substantial building to be used exclusively by the police. The entire second floor of the market house will be dovoted to offices.

RAILROAD NOTES.

Chief Engineer Gibbons Moves to thW City—Railroad Employes at Indianapolis.

Mr. John Dowling, Vandalia agent at Greenqastle, was in the city yesterday. Mr. A. J. Gibbons, chief engineer of theVandalia, has removed his family from Indianapolis to this city, and has gone to housekeeping at the corner of fourteenth and Locust streets.

The track of the Indiana A Illinois narrow gauge between Palestine and Switz City, is undergoing extensive repain. It will probably, in the near future, be made a standard gauge. Several new coaches and locomotives have been ordered.

The Excursion the 10th of May to Culloman, Ala., where the land owned by Messrs. Hnlinan, Duenweg and Eshman is located, is being extensively advertised. A large number of pamphletF, printed in English and German, describing the land, will be circulated.

The Indianapolis Journal contains the following, which can be aa well applied to Terre Haute: Railway employes at this point are doing themselves credit All are quietly doing their work, and trains are handled as promptly as usual. Strikes at other points are deprecated by a majority of the employes in the yards, about the depots, and by the trainmen as well. Indianajiolis is fortunate in one respect, a considerable per cent, of the men owning little homes that make them interested in the welfare of the city.

OLD COBWEB KAIJEm

Like the sweet lute like notes from farborne, the lost Atlantic come To quiet the youthful ear with mystic days of pleasure yet to rum, Where no mocking siren lingers along the polished wall, To mar the pleasure of old Cobweb hall Where no tinsled glory gleams itsshat'red ravs from a paper sun, Who's nigh-priced gilded frame fortells its low-priced rum, Where polished marble gleams its halow from the burnished wall, Is no place seen in old Cobweb hall.
