THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
State Superintendent Holoombe Interviewed About tbe School Enumeration.
There has been much discussion of late in regard to the distribution of the state school fund. State Superintendent Hoicombe being in attendance on the meeting the Normal trustees, an Express reporter sought an interview. "The enumeration of the school census," said Mr. Holcombe, "which is at present in progress, will prospectively show something over the average yearly increase in school population of the state. I regard the present system of apportionment of the school fund—that is, according to the actual school population—as effective, although it is possible that under the existing law frauds may be committed. For instance, Terre Haute, or Fort Wayne, or any other school district, might return a much larger school population than was actually possessed and derive ah unjust share of the public school fund. Still, those making the returns do so under oath and would, in case of fraudulent representations be prosecuted for perjury. The state auditor is a strong advocate a change in the existini law. He would have create law under which the school fund should be distributed upon a basis of the actual voting population. He thinks this would stimulate the citizens of the state to exercise their right of franchise and cut off all opportunities to commit fraud. If the law now in force is to be changed, I would like to see enacted in its place a law providing for an apportionment of the school fund on a basis of tbe average attendance on the school for each year. This I believe to be the coming law. It is the only system that will tend' to increase the attendance. on the schools. Parents and uardians will be stimulated to place heir children and wards in school and keep them there. Every community will be benefitted by such a law for it is a fact suscepta^le of proof that in those communities when the average attend ance at the schools is largest, there is greater intelligence among the masses, ess pauperism and I may say, less crime.
The public, school fund is intended through the schools, for the intellectual and moral—and consequently for the social welfare of the people. I believe this can best be reached by such a legislative enactment as I have named."
Mr. Holcombe left yesterday afternoon for Lafayette.

Easter.
Easter Sunday this year comes on the 25th of April. Easter is observed among all Christian people as the anniversary of the great event of the resurrection of Chiist He was dead, but returned te life. The egg is taken as emblematical of a return to life. It is to all appearances dead/but we know that if placed under proper conditions life will come forth from it The use of eggs for Easter was adopted for an usage older than our era. It was the custom in very early times to celebrate the return of spring by making presents of eggs. "Why does not Easter fall on a fixed day? Christmas is always on December 25th why. should not Easter be fixed with equal certainty It is not a particular date that is observed, but a particular Sunday. How to decide upon the Sunday gave the very churches much trouble, and there were differences on that account, but the matter was settled at a council held at Nice in the year 326. The rule was adopted that "Eister day was the first Sunday after the full moen, which happens on a Sunday. Easter day is the next Sunday after." This gives Easter day a wide range of dates, as it mav occur on any Sunday from March 22d to April 25th. Easter has not come as late as April 25 before in 192 years, and it will be as long again before it falls that late in the year.

Rev. S. H. Troyer, of New Albany, Ind., Ues as follows how he saved himself from an attack which threatened serious results:
On the 7th of June, 1884,1 was taken with rheumatic fever, and for five weeks was not free from it. It then settled in my left foot, where it remained for about four weeks. Then it moved to mf hips, shoulders, neck and cJllar bone, where it stayed until driven out by Athlophoros. Previous to the use of that remedy I had tried the skill of five physicians, from whom I obtained no relief. Then I resorted to the use of different remedies external and internal, but I continued to grow worse all the time' until the 1st of October, when my druggist recommended Athlophoros. I had but little faith when I took the first bottle. At this time was so helpless that my wife had to dress me, wash my face and assist me out of bed. I could not sleep more than from thirty to forty-five miifutea at a time, so intense was my pain. "My first dose of Athlophoros was taken at two o'clock in the afternoon, and I took two more soon after. The first dose gave me much relief, and the second eased me so greatly that I was enabled to talk freely and with comfort to my family and friends. The third dose enabled me to sleep four and a half hours without waking. I continued the use of Athlophoros until fourteen bottles in all had been taken. By this time my health was so much improved that I left off the medicine. That was in December, 1884, and I am .now quite well." ,i
Rev. Wm. Cool, of Denver, Ind., says I used only one bottle of Athlophoros, and I think it a good medicine. I consider that I derived much benefit from it."
Athlophoros," says Mr. D. P. Sheets, of Mooresville, Ind., "gave me great satisfaction in a case of neuralgia, and I can heartily recommend it to others as doing all that is claimed for it."
Mr. J. A. Wilson, the photographer of New Albany, I&d., whose offices are at Nos. 6 and 8 Main street, tells of one of these cases. His story follows: "I had rheumatism but it disappeared after using only pe bottle of Athlophoros. It was in my arms and I had sharp, shooting pains. I was suffering and complaining a good deal when a friend, coming into my gallery one morning, asked me what the trouble was. I said it was rheumatism. He told me of Athlophoros as a cure for neuralgia and rheumatism, and it struck me very forcibly, as it did not^ claim to cure every complaint that flesh is heir to. I bought a bottle on the strength of what he said. That was all I needed. I used the one bottle over six months ago, and have not had one ache or pain from rheumatism since."
Mr. Hiram F. Sides, of Fort Branch, Ind., says of his wife's cure: "Her suffering from neuralgia was intense, and we concluded to trv Athlophoros. Almost from the first dose I could see that she was improving, and two bottles effected a permanent cure, so that she feels no effects of her once dreaded disease. I tried it for rheumatism and soon found relief, one bottle curing me. I shall take great pleasure in recommending Athlophoros to my neighbors."
