In the present congress there are but' nine, yet Speaker Carlisle did not diminish the number— three—of chairmanships. Even the Republicans have fared well in the distribution of places. Yet the Democrats of New York nominated Jones for lieutenant governor on the strength of the fact that he was colonel of this Massachusetts' regiment, although he was not in the street with it when the alleged attack was made and shortly afterwards resigned from the service.

There is a class of government positions which are not within the letter of the civileervice statute, but which are so disconnected with the policy of an administration that the removal therefrom of present incumbents, in my opinion, should not be made during the terms for which they were appointed solely on partisan grounds and for the purpose of putting in their places those who are in politioftl aocord with the appointing power.

It seems hardly credible that the above is an extract from the letter written by Mr. Cleveland to George Wm. Curtis one year ago Christmas, but such it is. Since it jras written thousands of postmasters and internal revenue officials, ''disconnected wiih the policy of an administration" have been removed on partisan grounds, in truth on that ground stated in formal communications filed in the departments by other partisans. The sham and humbug of this administration do not even have the merit of being well enough devised to deceive anybody..,,.

Those loyalist members of parliament elected in Ireland who are giving to the public such incendiary remarks as this from one of them, "If home rule granted Ireland loyalists must arm them selves else their throats will be cut," should be suppressed by wiser ones of their party. Such talk is more treasonable, at least to the welfare of the people in general, than much that has been said by home rulers for which punishment his been inflicted. We do not believe there is any ground for thq, warning. The Irishman is not vindictive arid does not bear malice. He has grown desperate under oppression, but when the fetters are removed his nature will be joyful and buoyant. If home rule brings any disturbance at all in Ireland the chances are that it will grow out of quarrels among the home rulers themselves. In fact, that is the only consideration of danger in the proposition to give Ireland a parliament of its own.

another named James Voorhees, that he died the following day. The murderer disappeared, and the matter had almost faded from the minds of all. Recently, however, facta came to light which warranted the last grand jury in finding an indictment against Voorhees, for murder in the first degree. On Saturday last Prosecuting Attorney DeHart made anew examination of such of the witnesses to the affair he could get hold of, in an informal w»y. This was brought about by a letter received on the 31st of December, asking if Voorhees was wanted for the murder of O'Brian, and asking what reward would be paid for his production here, A second letter was received on Monday from a Terre Haute detective agency, making the same inquiry. A reply was to-day sent offering a satisfactory reward, which will probably result in Voorheesbeing apprehended and sent here for trial. It is understood that the murderer has, at some point in another state, made a confession of this murder, and it has come to the knowledge of some of the detectives, with the result, thus far, as stated. The affair at the time crected a great deal of excitement, and had the murderer been caught then he would undoubtedly have been lynched. Further developments will be looked for with interest.

«5*i A Singular Spit. The most singular spit in the world, says Hone, is that of the Count de Castel Maria, an opulent lord ofTreviso. This spit turns 130 diffeient roasts at once, and piays twenty four tunes and whatever it plays corresponds to a certain degree of cooking, which is perfectly understood by the cook. Thus, if "Yankee Doodle" is played, it signifies that the pork and beans are done. "Di quel la pira" would intimate that the macaroni was ready, and "God Save the Queen" would rescue the beef from being overdone.

HE WORSHIPED HIS WIFp 1 And Refused to Live Without H?er—

Tragic Suicide of Richard Bailey. CHICAGO, 111., January 7.—Richard Bailey died at the county hospital yesterday morning. Mr. Bailey was the original producer of Gilbert & Sullivan's comic opera "Patience" in America. He obtained the manuscript and score and put it on in a little town outside of Boston, his wife, Amy Goodrich, appearing in the title role. He has been in Chicago about a year and a half. He worshiped his wife, but they became estranged in some way. I He told his friend she crme to Chicago, and, although there was nothing in common between them, he came here to breathe the same atmosphere with her. While he never sought her, nor saw her, but kept knowledge of her whereabouts. Despondency gained the mastery of an otherwise energetic, bul otherwise too sensitive nature, and he lost all ambition.

About two weeks ago he went to, the Madson house, on Madison street, near Lasalle, and the chambermaid knocked on his door next morning, but no answer coming, and thinking he had been out late, paid no attention after knocking vigorously. Late in the afternoon1 the smell of gas was faintly discovered in the hall. Finally the key of the room Bailey occupied being absent from the rack in the office, they broke open the door and the occupant was found unconscious, while the room was full of gas.. He was alive and that was all. Medical attendance was obtained and after a day's care it was concluded to send him to the county hospital. There he has lain in a comatose condition since. The asphyxia was partially reduced when brain /ever set it and he has been lying on abed and pillows of ice for the past week. The hospital authorities state that he died of pneumonia.

The coroner will investigate the matter to morrow. In the minds of those who understand the man and his circumstances there is little if any doubt that he attempted suicide.

INDIANA'S SHARE.'•

The Hoosler Delegation Fares Better Than IT mtl at the Speakers' Hands. Special to the Indianapolis Journal.

WASHINGTON, D. C., January 7.— Indiana received her due portion of consideration by Speaker Carlisle in forming his committees. Altogether, the Hoosier delegation fared better than that of any other state. It has more prominence and more positions than any other delegation the same numbers of men. General Browne was returned to the ways and means committee, with an advancement of position. This is what the general has wanted, and he will be very well satisfied with it. Mr. Cobb, who is retained as chairman of the public lands committee, is delighted, as he has won quite a reputation in public land matten, and expects to figure more irominently in congress than ever be ore. Colonel Mateon goes back to the chairmanship ot invalid pensions, a prominent committee, and one for the duties of which he is well adapted. Mr. Holm an takes third rank on appropriations, where he has been heretofore, and is given second place on American shipibuilding, which may have important deities to perform, since subsidies for the establishment of American lines of steamships are talked of. Mr. Howard, of the New Albany district, is given positions en two prominent committer which is unusual for a new member. He goes on the banking and currency and claims committee. Mr. Bynum is on the coinage, weights and measures conimittee, which, since the agitation ot the silver question, is one of the most important committees in™*he house, and on the commerce committee, which has always takeD high rank among the committee.

Judge Lowry is second on the elections committee, which is about the fourth committee of importance in the house, and is made chairman of the committee on expenditures in the treasury department—a committee of no importance whatever, as it seldom meets and has no duties to perform worth mentioning, but which gives him a clerkship to dispose of. Major Steele stands at the head of the republicans on the .mili tary affairs committee, the choipe of positions to him. He did not want any other place, and is therefore snited perfectly. He is one of the best posted men on military affair in the house, and is taken .as authority in such matters. Judge Ward is second on post offices and post roads, a committee which, since it will have the formation of an appropriation committe, is one of the most prominent and one having the most far-reach ing influence of any in the house. Judge Ward does not need any more committee duties, but he is given a place on ex penditures in the postoffice department. Mr.' Kleiner ranks fourth on the Mississippi river and third on war claims, on which committee is Mr. Johnston, who is also on Judge Lowry'e committee on expenditures in ihe treasury department. Mr. Owen desired to go just-where he was assigned— on public buildings and grounds, where he can best serve his constituents, and especially in looking after the interests of his bill providing for a public building at Logansport. He also has a position on the military committee. Mr. Ford is at the end of the committee on the District of Columbia, where he can not serve his constituents, and has a place on revision of laws, an inconsequential committee.

5 YOUNG LEE,' .... -"v' }.

More Abont His Appointment as Janitor of the Court House. When Henry Tate, the old colored janitor of the court house, died, his duties were assumed by his two sons. Tate received $30 a month, and when his sons took the place they applied $20 every mouth to their father's debts. They performed the work to the satisfac tion of all, and no word of complaint iwas made against them. It will be remem bered mat the appointment of younj Lee was made after Mr. Roedel refusec to act with the commissioners, and was made by Commissioner Lee. father of young Lee, and Commissioner Wilson, Mr. Lee held over. Nothing was said about the change to Mr. Black and: Mr, Dickerson when they became members of the board, and they were surprised when Lee took the position. Besides giving the position to the son of Commissioner Lee,

the salary was raised from $30 to $37.50 a month. The action has caused considerable comment about the county offices. Said an employee of one ofi the county offices, and a'democrat: "I think the Tate bovs ought to have been given a show, arid I understand Commissioners Black and Dickerson think so, too.".

J. ALBERT WILLIAMS, M. D., jf

Graduatefrom.two of the leading medical colleges in this country, attendant of the best hospitals--4, and Woman hospital, New York city late physician to the Detroit Head, Throat and Chest

institute, and Physician to Diseases of Women, has opened a permanent office on Sixth street, os it to re a or the cure of aU the various diseases THBOAT, CHEST and aiseases of WOMEN. In the treatment'of CATARRH, THROAT DISEASES ABTTTMA, BRONCHITIS, .CONSUMPTION, and LOSS OF VOICE, W adopt the most improved system of medicated inhalation and .• other appliances which bring the remedies into direct contact with the organs diseased. It is conceded by all learned physicians to be the only system by which those diseases can be cured. It has established their entire curability, and has rescued thousands. from the grave. There is a cure for any and all afflictions of the Throat and Lungs—a enra that may be safely relied upon with all oonfidsnce and hope. It is reliable, certain, direct. and permanent in its effects. Improvement seen and felt from ihe first hour of treatment, I care not how much you are suffering. I wish it to be clearly understood that when I advocate inhalation as a method of treatment I do not mean any one, two or a do%en specific medicine. Inhalation rightfullyapplied must be thoroughly understood and medicine prepared for each individual oase. ..

CATARRH

That early and dwgusting malady with its multiplicity of symptons: the sore throat. :v enlarged or ulcerated tonsils, the remarkable tendency to contract a cold, hoarseness, hacking cough, hard and dry coughs, profuse expectoration, hacking, suoking and drawing. ..... down the palate. All this train of evils is controlled by the new remedies without resorting to the barbarous practice of burning, blistering-or stupifying the senses with opium. I have fie best treatment and appliances that ever csme to this city.
