LOW BRIDGES.

rho Government Engineer Looking After tbe Lotr Bridges oa the Wabasli.

It seems that corporations and others "ontroilfng bridges across the Wabash I'ual are in any way a hindrance to navigation have received notice from A. M. Miller, major of corps of United States engineers, notifying them of the fact, and that I he obstructions must br. removed. The Lafayette Courier mentions that the county clerk, of Tippecanoe county haf been notified that the two wagon bridge*

I that point are obstructions to navigation, and that they must he raised or suitable draws put in. There are quite a number of wagon and railroad bridges between Terre Haute and Lafayette that have no draws and are too low for boats so pass under. The controllers of the bridges have been notified that the Wabash is a navigable stream, and that the structures are obstructions to navigation, The following is the act on which the government engineers base their orders:

SEO. 8. That whenever the secretary of war shall have good reason to believe that any railroad or other bridge now or to be hereafter constructed over any of the navigable waters of tiie United States, tinder authority of the United States, or of any state or terrritory, is an obstruction to the free navigation of such waters, by reason of difficulty in passing the draw-opening or the raft-span of said bridge, by rafts, steamboats or other water-craft, it ahall be the duty of the said secretary, on satisfactory proof thereof, to require the company or persons owning, controling or operating said bridve, to cause such adds to the passage of Said draw-opening or said raft-span, or of both said draw-opening and raft-span to be constructed, placed and maintained, at their own cost and expense, in the form of booms, dikes, piers, or other suitable and proper structures for the niding of said rafts, steamboats, and other water-craft, safely through said opening or span, or both said opening or span, as shall be specified in his order in that behalf and upon failure of the company or person aforesaid to make and establish such additional structures within a reasonable time, the said secretary will proceed to cause the same to be bailt or made at the expense of the United States, and shall refer the matter without delay to the attorney general of the United States, whose duty it shall be to institute, in the name of the United States, proceedings in any Circuit or District court of the United StateB in whioh such bridge, or any part thereof, is located, for recovery of tbe ooet thereof and all moneys accruing from such proceedings shall be covered into the United States treasury. Provided, That no greater sum than $15,000 shall be required to be expended upon any one bridge in a single year provided, further, That snoh sum of money as may be necessary to execute the provisions of this act is hereby appropriated out of any money in the treasury of the United States not otherwise appropriated, to be paid on the requisition of the secretary of war.

The council of Mattooa ha? passed an ordinance prohibiting the burning of pil ar gasoline lamps in places of busii after the same have been closed for the night The city fas had two narrow escapes from fire lllely, due to the explo sion of lighted lapips left in business houses over night.

This great benefaction, however, is not one which rejoices this particular Lafayette alone, but it has been given to other Lafayettes as well, and to the world. Athlophoros ia the magic remedy which drives away rheumatism and neuralgia, atid Lafayette- has only shown its characteristic enterprise in recognizing the new cure's many virtues. Among those whom it has benefited is Mrs. Francis Heath, of No. 79 Ferry street, an old resident and the mother of banker Heath. In answer to one who recently called on her to learn' the facts in the case she gave this account:

I have had rheumaticpaina in my feet for a number of years. They affected me at times so that it was with much difficulty that I could walk, especially in going down stairs. Athlophoros was first recommended to me by Bishop Bowman. I did not get it at that time, but kept trying other medicines. It was again recommended to me by a lady. I then sent for and bought a bottle. I took a dose, and it seemed to me as if I could feel it go through my system until it came directly to the sore spot. It felt just aa a little stream of water looks when during its course it comes in contact with a pebble. One or the other must give way. The water may run around the stone, but that was not the way Athlophoros did. It did not go around the pain, but drove it away. The relief was almost instantaneous. While I am getting along in years and cannot expect to get rid entirely of these pains at once, yet a small dose of Athlo-

phoros in a little cream—the way in which I find most pleasant to take it—relieves the pain immediately."

Mr. Baldridge, who is in the real estate and insurance business at No. 9J South Third street, and who lives at No. 17 North Sixth street, happening to be .passing while Mrs. Heath was speaking, she called him in and he gladly told how he had been cured of rheumatism by Athlo phoros. "I was just about to start down to nv office one morning last winter," he saic, when a terrible pain took me right in the hip and then ran down the sciatic nerve as quick as lightning. It was with much lain amd distress'that I managed to get iown to my office at all. My business being Buch that it was necessary for me to be at the office every day, I was obliged to hobble along and get there the Best I "Could. I suffered for some time in this way, trying all kinds of remedies, but nothing seemed to check the disease until I commenced using Athlophoros. The first four doses gave me relief. I only used one bottle, and am perfectly well, as you see me now. I have never had any return of the pain since I took the Athlophoros."
