A HORRIBLE DEATH.

A Widow Rt Marshall, 111., Burned to Death.,,,, Special to the Express. •,.

Marshall,111., January 6.- ^.ast evening at about 6 o'clock the rcf*. cir-, culated that Mi's. Murty Murphy, an Irish widow, had been found bnrned to death in her house, in the south part of town. It was stated that some of th^. neighbors becoming alarmed at not se ing any smoke coming from the chimney all day yesterday, had gone over to see what was the matter. Finding all the doors locked they raised, a window, and there saw her dead body- Your correspondent went down to the house immediately, and found quite a large crowd there. On entering the house a horrible sight met his view. Lying on «he floor across a large burned plade. in the floe was the dead and charred body of"*' a hapless woman. A coroaer's jury was

with blood. This led to the belief by some that she had- been murdered for what money she was known to have. The doctor stated positively that lie could find no marks ,of violence, and that the bruise was from the fall. An overturned chair was lying off to one side of the body. The feet were near the fire place. THP^pfcnerally accepted theory is that she had been sitting by the fire and fallen asleep.. A spark may then have ign.^d her dress. This soon awoke her and she sprang to her feet, overturning the chair. Probably she wa6 then instantly overcome with theheat and smoke, as she was old and feeble, and fell forward on her face, making the bruise mentioned. The floOr was burned in all directions around her. It is sortiewhat of a mystery how the fire went out, but this may be explained by the fact that the house sat very low on the ground and therefore the joists and floor *ere full of frost. The accident evidently occurred Sunday night after dark, as she was last seen that evening. She lived all alone in the house, her only child, a son, being in the insane asylum. Mrs. Murphy was a scrupulously honest woman and was "respected by her friends and acquaintances. Her awful death has caused a thrill of horror to run through the community. The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery this morning. A large number of her friends followed the body to its last resting place.

The January Term at Court—Judge C6ffey Lecture# Administrators for Delaying the Settlement of Estates. Special to the"Espress.

Brazil, Ind., January 6.—The Presbyterian Sunday school Sunday elected the following officers W. P. Blair, superintendent J. C.' Gregg, assistant superintendent Will Eisher, secretary and treasurer Hugh Stevenson, librarian Will Payne, chorister May Bryson and Jennie Herr, organists. All the Protestant churches in the city commenced the observance of the week of prayer by folding a series of meetings each evening: to continue throughout the week. The January term of court opened Monday morning with quite a large number of litigants and witnesses in attendance. Before commencing the business of the term, Mr. George A.

Knight, as chairman of the committee, presented the resolutions passed by the bar concerning the death of Col. George D. Teter, which, in pursuance of a resolution passed at the bar meeting, were spread upon the records of the court. Mr. Knight supplemented the resolutions with a short address, which was read from manuscript, and listened to with marked attention by all present. The petition of several judgment creditors was presented, asking an order of the court authorising Receiver Riddle to sell the Wheeler coal shaft, to pay their judgments against the property. The board of commissioners met in called session to-day. They will probably only be in session for a few days.——— During the calling of the probate docket Judge Coffee remarked that he thought he observed a tendency upon the part of many administrators of estates to delay settlement in order 'to indulge creditors by giving them time to pay debts due on the-estate, thus keeping the estates in court at the expense of the heirs. The court peremporarily informed *he bar that sucli practice must tease, and that administrators must collect debts du,e the estates tliev represent as speedily as possible and bring the affairs to a close with as little delay and expense to heirs as possible. Earn Keith and his sister, Mrs J.

Mj.pHoskins, have returned from New (Means.5 G. W. Reed, sr., is "prostrated with a severe spell of sickness from which his recovery is said to be doubtful. C, H. Knight," J. A. Montgomery, W. R. Guthrie and perhaps quite a number of other Democrats of greater or less prominence will go to Indianapolis to attend the opening of the legislature.-—srThe city school teachers, most of whom have been absent during vacation, have returned home and the schools resumed thi» morning with a full attendance. Malk Wilson nas bought out the grocery store of Grinsdale Bros', and will run the business at the old stand,
