A Fast Cattle Train.

A train of ten cars of cattle was sent over the Milwaukee Road from Omaha to Chicago recently, in twenty-one hours. This is two hours better than the passenger trains do. It was the first effort on the part of the Milwaukee to show its competitors that it could beat the best time yet made by stock trains fully nine hours. The cattle was loaded in the American Cattle Company's cars, so that there was no stopping to feed and,water along the road.

J. A. Weed, of the train dispatcher's office, spent Sunday in Clay City. The Van shops will close at 4 o'clock this evening to allow the men to vote.

John Tolbert, a Terre Haute boy, is here from Kansas City, where ne is Continental Line agent.

The crew of No. 5 will be held over at Indianapolis until 8 o'clock this morning, to allow the men to vote.

The annual meeting of the Train Dispatchers' association will be held at Indianapolis the second Sunday in this month.

The Chicago & Eastern Illinois earnings for the third week in October were $39,623, against $43,593 for '83 decrease $3,955.

All Vandalia local trains and No. 24 will be held over until 8 o'clock this morning, giving all crews an opportunity to vote early.

J. B. Blinerick, former agent of the Vandalia at Jewett, has been promoted to the agency at Tentopolis, to be succeeded by H. Huston.

No. 166 switch engine will be run out of the shops to day. The boys call it th.e "Blaine" engine because it goes out the same -day that Blaine comes in.

Quite a pleasant party was given last Wednesday night at the residence of John Wall", foreman of the Van blacksmith shops, in honor of hid goa^Ecf"die. About sixty-five young people were present.

Our evening contemporary may want to know why the Express publishes the above without comment. "Walls of Corn" is the title of a neat little pamphlet received from the department of immigration of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe R. R., which goes to show that Kansas raises poetry as well aa corn, and a high grade tide, too. Mrs. Ellen P. Allerton, Kansas former's wife, wrote a charm ing little poem entitled "Walls Corn," which has been handsomely illustrated, with full page colored plates.

New Poisons.

Two new poisons are described in the Progres Medical. Both, it saya, cause death by arresting the heart's actios. One of them comes from Borneo, and is an arrow poison. Almost all that scientists yet know of it lies in the number of unfortunate dogs they have destroyed suddenly with it. Of the other poison, it is stated that an animal of medium Bize, wounded with an arrow whose point had been imbued with it, would make one bound and then fall back dead. Even an elephant will succumb to its effects after running half a mile or so. The composition of the poison is not yet known, as it is kept secret by the Moris, from whom a I specimen was obtained by a subterfuge. The substance is said to be innocuous when taken into the stomach.

A Japanese Superstition.

New York Commercial Advertiser. The pet aversion of a Japanese is the fate of being buried at sea. The other day, Kido, an attache of the Japanese legation at Berlin, embarked at Maroeiles for Yokohoma. To make sure that if he died at sea his body should not be consigned to the deep, he took on board with him a handsome coffin and everything necessary for embalmment. Political excitement has almost entirely banished speculative trading on 'change. Instead of watching the ticker as usual, all the bulls and bears are eagerly waiting for election bulletins and betting on results in doubtful states. This leaves the markets pretty well neglected, and with the exception of some buying by parties who figure on a bulge when dealers settle down to business again few transactions.

Wheat is dull but steady. Receipts aDd shipments are liberal, and notwithstanding the continued crv of "no demand," exports are more than fair. Cables report spot wheat and cargoes off coast steadily on the down grade. This, to say the least, is rather remarkable. It is strange that the very heavy arrivals of the past two weeks should be taken care of at firm and unchanged figures but "wind" that is not pressing, or something that the seller has 60090 days to deliver, and the buyer to provide for, should be the only thing to show a decline. Many experienced men here claim the secret of this is that some of the bears are endeavoring to check any disposition to advance by cabling offers to sell at slightly reduced prices. Imports into Great Britain, however, are large and their farmers' deliveries heavy, both together giving them supplies beyond their requirements, so that for the first time in over a year they are adding to their stocks in store. Still, now that the harvests of Europe are almost completed the latest estimates do not indicate any super-abundance. Stocks in Chicago are slowly increasing, bat are considerably less than at this time a year ago, and while the charges obtained by those who carry the wheat in store against sales for future delivery are not specially attractive they are sufficient to relieve the market from the pressure of,, any cash offerings. It' is' reported too from Kansas and Dakota that the acreage of fall sowing shows a big decrease, and knowing ones say that Adams, "Old Hutch" and Kent, who are known to be heavily long, propone on the strength of this to attempt an advance before the close of the week.

Corn is without special interest There is a good steady consumptive demand for corn at almost all seasons of the year, and while receipts continue as light as they are now, prices are not likely to suffer any serious jde-

Provisions are more active than any thing else just now. Transactions are confined to future delivery, stocks being unusually light, and all articles except lard commanding a premium for spot stuff. Now that the new packing season has opened, it is thought that prices of raw material and of product will undergo some important readjustments.
