NOVELS.
4
&
TH* BEV* B* OE BR^CDDII'F LWIITFT OB mad NOT«1 Beading."
The Bev. H. O. Breeden, pastor of the Christian church, delivered his lecture on "Novels and Novel Read ing," last evening, to a good audience. He took his text from Phil. iv.-8, and said in substance:
It is said that all literature is a picture of the soul, and as one may sit for several pictures so literature presents the human mind in various attitudes. Beligious works represent the soul looking upward towards its Creator history represents it looking back over the ages, and romance looking toward the beautiful. There are five fine arts, having for thciir mission the beautifnl alone architecture, painting, sculpture, musie and literature, and of the latter the novel is an important branch. What 1s the novel? Webster says: "a fictitious tale or narrative intended to exhibit the operations of the passions, and particularly of love." But as the subject now stands, this is not so much a definition of. the novel in its beet and broadest sense as of a particular branch of it, and that the east praiseworthy.
In its highest ranges the novel is ornamented truth—beautiful thoughtornamented with the imagination and fancy. As one has said, the philosophy of the novel is human thought, ornamented by a beautiful woman. Indeed, she is the essence, the reason, the inspiration of the novel. That this is true is demonstrated by the fact that during the dark ages, for 1,600 years, there were no novels because the women were in the back ground. In the revival of letters, however, back came woman, also the novel. Becall and review the standard novels—Richter's, Thackery, McDonald, George Eliot, Bulwer and others, and yon will find that these gather up the truthB of this world, and fasten them together in a beautiful package. Love is the string that binda them and a beautiful woman usually holds string.
tactical question about we read them?" As
well ask, shall we read literature of any character. I would as readily advise one not to read facts as to avoid fiction.
It is not enough to recommend a thing to say "it is a fact" It mast be a worthy fact. "A true story" may be the most exact statement of a crime and very bad reading. The most fanciful biography of a fairy, or mermaid, may be good reading. If you find yourself readinst the "Life of the James Boys," or "Younger Brothers," and will lay it down and begin on "jEsop's Fables" you will make a' happy exchange, both for yourself and neighbor, an exchange of fool facts for fair fiction. There are novels that are pure, good, christian, elevating and ennobling to the heart and life. The world can never repay the debt of gratitude it ones to Jean Fane Richter's, who wanted the Countess Linda to throw a beautiful light over philosophy and science to Dickens, the friend of the children and the apostle of philanthrophy to [cDonald, who restated Chris-
George Mc. tianity for us in his novels to Miss Edgeworthand Thackery, who so faithfully exposed, the follies of society. Nor should the world ever forget the walk through the galleries of fine arts with Hawthorne or how faithfully the memories of the past have been embalmed by Walter Scott. These and others read at right times and in proper proportion with other Dooks, ean not help but be elevating and purifying. The test cf a book to, "does it help?" Doee the boy lay it down, feeling a little braver for the battle of life, and resolved to pitch his life higher? This is the effect of reading Walter Scott on boys and girls. Another test of a novel is what ideas are offered by it, and how many of them? No book is absolutely harmless. If it is not positively good it is a thief of time. And the indiseriminate reading of novels is ruinious. I counsel the young not only to stand aloof from the novel that gives a false picture of life and corrupts the immag[nation while it inflames the passions, but to avoid reading, even good novels to excess. One- can take any good and enlarge it into a curse. He can go orasv after music or buy cats until he is a maniac. So one can read bad novels until the desperado spirit takes possession of him and he goes forth a bandit to rapine and cruelty murder. And he mav read
novels in such excess that he wil* unfit for the duties of life. The novel—not the debilitating, but the bracingly good novel—properly used, is a means of culture, and no man can lay claim to liberality of thought or breadth of education who has not read novels somewhat.
