NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES.

Brazil.

Special to the Express. BRAZIL, Ind., October 27.—D. C. Falkner, recently of the clothing houae of Falkner & Long, of this city, went to Terre Haute to day, where he takes position in the clotLing establishment of Mr. Goodman. John Brownlee and wife were here Sunday visiting Mr. John Hendrix, the father

Mrs. Brownlee. An extensive robbery waB committed upon Philip Schlonse, a citizen of the east end, laet night. While the family were all asleep the robbers got in through a window and succeeded }n getting oat a trunk containing over $500. They got away with the booty without detection. No clue has been discovered as to who the parties were who perpetrated the crime, though the trunk was found some distance away. It still contained a $10 gold piece which had escaped their notice.

Testing a Smoke Consumer.

St. Louis Globe-Demnorat. At the MacDonald Forge and Iron works, at the foot of Miller street, yesterday, the first test was made of the smoke-consuming device which is inseparably connected with the name of Mike Kearney, the master mechanic of the Frisco road. The lire box of anew heating furnace was filled at 7 a. to. and at 11 a large quantity of fuel was still unconsumed. A pure white flame poured through the furnace from one end to the other, and thence to one of the boilers where the tail end of the flame kept up a pressure of onehundred pounds of Bterfm. The stack from this furnace gave no hint of smoke or vapor, something in marked contrast to the volumes of black clouds rolling out of the other stacks close ound. The device is good to save fuel, but still better to prevent smoke, and some of the city council members propose to visit the MacDonald works at an early day with a view of getting a little light on the subject of smoke consumption in large cities.

The receiver of a railway cannot give preference to a claim that originated prior to the appointment of the receivership for the property he iB asked to operate belongs to the bondholders. Millions upon millions of dollars are invested by capitalists in bonds of railways. It is tnis moneyed influence that is' interested in the action already taken by a portion of the West Shore bondholders to protect their property from being operated at a loss. The bondholders of every railway in the country are interested in the issue. None but desperate men would have forced the issue, and having done so should be held pecuniarly responsible for any breach of trust.

A course in railroading has been introduced in the curriculum of Yale college. During the current academic year a series of lectures will be given by Mr. Arthur T. Hadley upon topics embracing the history, business methods of railroads, and the social problems connected with them. These matters are of great importance, and the information furnished to young men studying for the pursuits of railroading, journalism or law, will be invaluable.

The engine named the Henry A. Whitney, on the Boston & Providence railroad, and built by the Mason Machine Works, Taunton, has made a fine showing in economical burning of coal, consuming thirty-five pounds of coal per mile. Taking into consideration the heavy grades at Canton and Sharon, the load and rapid transit, the above figures show the least amount burned per mil6 on record. The engine was built for the Short Line to New York. ____

A New York woman was en route for Boston on her first visit. "Can you tell me, please," Bhe said to a lady in the chair ahead, "If Springfield is where the trains stop for refreshments

No, madam," was the response "Springfield is where the passengers stop for refreshments."

She had run up against a Bostonian the very first thing.

The superintendents of the various divisions of the Pullman Palace Car company, from Maine to California, held a meeting Wednesday at Chicago, and discussed rules and regulations for the government of the Pullman service and such other general matters as related to the management of the Pullman lines.

The New York Post says: "We learn of specific transactions in regard to east-bound freights covering a period of six months to come, which indicate that the railioads are ofifering to make contracts for that time at about 15c. per hundred pounds from Chicago to New

..,.

York, which does not look much like peace." Short Lines.

A. E. Shrader, of the Midland, was called ont of town yesterday on railroad business.

H. A. Reed has been appointed freight and ticket agent of theVandalia at Montrose.

The I. & St. L. will sell tickets to Indianapolis, Friday, October 31st, onehalf fare the round trip. _jThe Van. ticketed thirty-two persons to Brazil yesterday on the occasion of the Johnston-Lamb debate.

A. C. Hartwell, car accountant for the Illinois Midland, at Decatur, is recovering from his recent illness.

E. J. McDole, of St. Louis, was here yesterday in the interest of the St. Louis, Minneapolis & St. Paul Short Line.

The trip over the I. & St. L. to-day will be the first one President Devereaux has made over this division for quite an extended period.

up for Richard the Third. I want some liquor. I have no money. Now, I propose to pledge my royal person for ten dollars, and you may lay me upon one of your shelves." The pawnbroker paid the $10, and Cook was laid up. Meanwhile a large audience had. assembled at the theater, and at 7 o'clock the manager was obliged to apolo ize to the audience for the absence of ooke, and asked permission to commence the performance with a farce. boy awaited him as he left the stage, and presented a note written in cipher, whicn he translated thus: "Mr DEAE JONES: I am pawned for ten dollars •end and redeem me, or it will be impossible for
