General

Black in his speech last Thursday night, addressed to an audience of three hundred, according to the

Times,

the Democratic organ of this city, said Mr. Blaine had abandoned his tariff speeches as a means of arousing the north, and was moving to anew base under fire, a movement condemned by all good generals! (including General Black.) This, too, in face of the ringing tariff speech at Terre Haute that very afternoon. If General Black's statements were all on a par with that they certainly should be heavily discounted as guides to political meas-

enthusiasm with which the cam

paign commenced here has steadily increased and now is at a high point. The Republicans are confident They expect to carry the county for a portion of their county ticket, for the senatorial, state and national tickets, also,

A notable meeting will occur in the Academv of Music next Friday night. This will be an extra, and is held to give Mr. Oscar S. Merkle, of this city, student at DePauw university, a chance to publicly state his reasons for leaving the Democracy and coming over to the Republican camp. All of Mr. Merkle's relativw gnd antecedents are Dosto-

yoang man of fine and a brilliant

crate. He is a ability, an orator scholar.

Col. Van Sellar, Edgar county's fa

Can vorite of all favorite Bons, who came to this county a poor boy, carrying all his earthly possessions in a grip sack, who enlisted as a private under the first call for soldiers, came home after the war closed a colonel, will close this campaign here next Monday night by a speech in the Academy of Music.

Fair weather or foul, that hall will be packed to its utmost capacity to hear the colonel. The next night his friends expect to barn all their brown plug hats and a thousand old ones in honor of his 500 majority in Edgar coudty, Stick a pin there!

Since the Terre Haute meeting Blaine's boom here has been rolling like bounding billowB. The Republican craft rideB the waves dashingly, and all the crew are hilarious. Everywhere, in the stores, on the streets, in the workshops, around the family circle, it is Blaine, Blaine, Blaine! Even the babes in trundling carts wear Blaine caps and wave Blaine flags! The Democrats say, "The whole blamed country has gone crazy about Blaine!" For once they correctly state the diagnosis of the disease. They Bhould add, it is contagious.

The clique regularly take care of all the cash stuff, and although they deliver out a little, occasionally, it is all readily taken and paid for by shippers. Hence many operators cling to their old faith in a big bulge at the close of the month and that it would have been very foolish to have pushed up the market heretofore, as it would only have invited the enormous rush of corn which characterized the close of September and is this time avoided. There is also considerable buying by those who consider that as the price of I corn will largely depend on the weather for the balance of the year, and the chances are against its gtading freely, it is now low enough to purchase. From the winter wheat belt two reports indicate that up to the present there is a decrease in acreage of fully 15 per cent., but the seeding is not yet completed, and later advices mav modify this. It is said that some French dealers and speculators have been buying quite a good deal of wheat recently, fearing that an import tariff is about to be imposed on wheat by the French congress, and wishing to load np pretty well before such a measure is passed.

Provisions are quiet. Receipts of hogs show a falling off both in quantity and quality. Shippers are not buying freely, and as there are only eleven Mtcfeing houses running prices for the ive animals are pretty slumpy. A larger run is expected before the week closes, when the packers will doubtless endeavor to force a lower range, as at the current quotations for November or January product the present price of hogs is said to leave the packers a serious loss, so that hogs must either go lower or the prices of provisions materially advance.
