NEIGHBORHOOD POLITICS.

Johnston and Parke County Politics. Special to the Express. BOCKVILLE, Ind., October 21.—The joint discussion between the Hons. James T. JobnBton and John E. Let everybody come that can and hear the political issues discussed.

Edgar County llepubilcans. ISABEL, 111., October 21.—The Republican rally here Saturday night vas an eye-opener to the Democrats. The wigwam was beautifully decorated and was jammed with an enthusiastic crowd. Ool. Van Seller, of Paris, candidate for the state senate, and George E. Bacon, of the same city, were the orators of the occasion. The tide of enthusiasm in Edgar county is on the increase, and this staunch Democratic stronghold stands a good chance of being carried for Blaine and protection.

Cannon at Tuscola.*

TUSCOLA, 111., October 21.—The Republicans of this place held a rally here last night, which was attended by a large crowd. Hon. Joseph G. Gannon, candidate for congress, addressed an immense audience at the Opera house.

TO THE PEOPLE COUNTRY.

An Address From tbe National Republican Committee. The Republican national committee has issued an address to the country, in which it says: "The Republican national committee hails in the glorious victories already won, a sure omen of the greater victory that is close at hand. Vermont is still the star that never sets. Maine, captured in 1880, rebukes slander by a plurality of 20,000, a gain of 13 per cent, of its entire vote. West Virginia in place of 11,000 plorality for Hancock now fallB below 3,000, a Republican gain of 70 per cent., which kindles hope that the one hundred and fifty-three votes of the solid south may be broken in November. But the result in Ohio is a revolution and a prophecy. Only a year ago Democratic by 12,000, and two years ago by 19,000 pluialitv. Ohio now goes 12,000 plurality for the lowest Republican state candidate, and on_ national issues 18,000 for a Republican congress. This magnificent victory is a prophecy of 40,000 for Blaine and Logan in November. With the ratio of gain in other states it foreshadows an increase of 700,000 in the Republican national vote and the largest popular majority ever given to any candidate. "These victories show that the Republican party, which was the first to

REMARKABLE EXPERIMENT

Man's Peculiar Defenslveness

She lifted her eyebrows in simulated surprise, as though an impertiment fellow had unwarranted accosted her,

an?4

pointedly turned her face away from him. He understood her now, ar.d did not speak to her further. Next, she drew her shoulder away from contact with his. By this time the spectators were believing that he was annoying her dreadfully, and scornful glances were aimed'at him. Her final trick was conclusive. It consisted in suddenly pulling her eifcirts clear of his trousers, and deliberately setting her feet as far in the other direction as the end of tbs car would peimit. Nobody doubted that the dear, demure creature had been grossly iBsnlted. A man arose from the opposite side: "Will you^exchange seats with me?" he very gallantly and politely said, lifting his hat most deferentially.

Now, he had been foremost among the original oglers—the veriest simpleton of them all. 'Thank you, sir," she replied, aB bland as a white heifer, "but I prefer to sit beside my husband."

Thus with the Bame stone she killed that vulture-bird and the dove-mate whom

"The grandest part of any history ever made by any nation is the work of tbe Republican party. It rests with you, Republicans of the nation ,to carry forward the work which you and your fathers have begun, and to which so many brave and faithful have given precious lives—that government of the

ot Unpro

Clara Belle in Cincinnati Enquirer. I hold it to be a truth constantly self evident that every man will defend woman against all men except himself. If you haven't noticed it already, you have only to look for it an hour or so in any place of mixture of the sexes. Clap your eye on a pretty woman with out male escort, and two phenomena will become obvious. Firstly, there will be a large amount of open and covert staring at her, to all of which her oblivious ness is of course only assumed. Secondly, if one of the starers happens to realize that others are at the same game he will manifest plainly his disgust at Buch treatment of an unprotected beauty, utterly ignoring his own offense. A husband and wife got into street car. The man was somewhat dudish in dress. The woman was under 20 and as pretty as nature and art are in the habit of combining to produce. They were chatting on the very subject that I hare here introduced. "Percival, denr," said she, "I will prove that I am right, and take only two minutes to do it, if you'll promise not to set angry about it."

He closed the contract. Then she dtew herself up^, as though the husband sitting beside her was an entire stranger, and waited for the car to fill with passengers at Union Square. "Now," she 'whispered behind her fan, "observe how I am ogled when alone."

Within five minutes he saw that half dozen masculine passengers, from hoary age to callow youth, eyed his bride with more or less audacity, and several manifestly would not have needed the smallest beginning of a wink upon her part to seize upon her then and there. That part of the exhibition was a triumph for the wife, but the most curious feature of her experiment remained to be tried.

You certainly do not seem to attract a great deal of admiration," said the husband, supposing that the pretended strangeness was at an end.
