Complaints are frequently made of the amount of switching done at the Poplar 'street crossing of the E. & T. H. A prominent citizen stated yesterday that it injured the sale of property on east Poplar.

Paris Times: Several members of the Terre Haute bicycle club were in the city Sunday, having made the trip overland from their native burg. They have handsome machines and make a fine appearance.

At the pronouncing and spelling match at Centenary church to-night, Professors M. Seiler and W. W. Byers will act as judgeB, Bev. A. Kummer as master, ana W. S. Koney and J. W. Landrum as captains.

Tim Mulverhill and Harry Taylor were arrested yesterday on a Van freight train, near the river, and slated suspicion. Taylor had $25.15 in his possession, and Mulverhill a package of handkerchiefs, which he claimed were for sale.

Xhe Helping Hand Society. The ladies of the Congregational church have revived the society known as the Helping Hand, which did so much good in this city last winter. The ladies wish it understood that the society is not for the benefit of their own flock, but for the poor in general. considerable amount was raised. A large number of applications have been made, and at a recent meeting the ladies decided not to advertise the society too much. The society will meet every Thursday afternoon, commencing in a few weeks. Those who attend will be furnished with materials, which will be made up into garments. Readings will be given by the ladies while the work is progressing. The ladies have also made arrangements for music. This society has done much charitable work, and is destined to do more this winter.

St. Patrick's Pair.

St. Patrick's fair was well attended last evening. The stage exercises were an excellent feature. The tables were well patronized. The following have charge of the tables. Dinner and sup per will be served to-day and to-mor-row:
