NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES.

BlarsbaU Matters.

Special to the Express. Marshall, 111., October 9.—Bar nam's show proved quite a magnet to the people here, the Yandalia agent selling one hundred and twenty-six tickets to Terre Haute that day. Rev. Hamill and wife, of Pana, who, with their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ohal rners Hamill, of Alabama, have been visiting relatives here for a few days, went to Terre Haute Tuesday. They went from there home yesterday. Mrs. Chalmers Hamill also started for her Home the same day.—Twenty-nine persons in all bought tickets at the van. office here to St. Louis, to attend the fair and exposition and to see the Veiled Prophets. Among those who went were Jarhes "Dfrake, Geo. Powers, Will Shipe and wife, Koss Holler, 0. W. Dulaney and wife, tat Tierney, Misses Lida Dulaney and Cora Holler, Darius Legore and others. Miss Myrtle Prewett is now in Mt. Vernon visiting friends. Mrs. William Hillibert, a sister of Mrs. Wash Cox, was buried,Monday, at Walnut Prairie cemetery. She lived across the river from Darwin, biit come up about three weeks ago to visit her sister and died there.——J. N. Farr and Cy Harlan, sheriff and deputy sheriff, went to Anna, on Tuesday, taking Jehn Devers, destined for the insane asylum there. They intended stopping at St. Louis on their way back. The residence of James Moore, about ten miles west of town, was entered by a burglar a few 'days ago and $10.60 in silver taken. A bag of gold amounting to $525 was saved by the presence of mind of a little girl who worked there, she taking the money from its hiding place and tunning to the house of a neighbor with it. It is thought the burglar was a tramp.

Rookvllle Ripples.

Rockville, Ind., October 9.— 01. Mahan has returned home from Southwestern Kansas. He is visiting his many friends and acquaintances in Rockville and will leave for his home, in Leabanon, Saturday. The Building Association sold $300 to Lew Morris at 45 cents premium, and $200 to Frank Anaway at 35 cents, Monday night. These premiums are the largest ever received by the association. Mi pa (Jarrie Stevenson, of Terre Haute, is visiting Mrs. John F. Meacham.—— Barnum's show passed through this place Wednesday moming. It took four trains to move the great curiosity. William N. Aikins. candidate for representative, and Dr. George W. McCune, of Montezuma, were here Wednesday night and listened to the' eloquent John F. Scanlan's speech. They returned home highly pleased. White's opera band furnished music for the Lamb rally at Montezuma Wednesday evening. Likewise the Parke band for the Scanlan speaking at Rockville the same evening. thro Fauver is no more in Pat Thomas' barber shop. He will open a shop of his own. Jerre Kinney, Jr., local editor of the Crawfordsville Star, visited Rockville Tuesday.-—The town board met in regular session Monday night. They ordered some new walks, which are badly needed in various parts of town. C. W. Brown, of the Globe printing office, Terre Haute, was in town to-day.

NEIGHBORHOOD POI1ITIO8.

Tbn Hon. John F. Scanlan Meets

Great Favor at Kockvllle.

Special to the Express. Rockville, Ind., October 9.—The Hon. John F. Scanlan, the Irish Qrator and statesman of Chicago, made the moBt masterly speech of the campaign Wednesday night. For two hours he held the crowded court room silent in the closest attention save only the irrepressible cheers by which the great audienco shouted their approval of his sledge hammer arguments, or the uproar of merriment at anecdotes which sparkled with all the bright wit of tl

„£e Green Island. He began with a tribute to the honesty and sincerity of all the people, and without further prelude dashed at the. Democratic leaders, viz., the the Democratic party. He showed the field in 1S60 and longer ago. He swept before the audience a panorama in which the principal events of a quarter of a century gone by appeared and vanished in regular order, until the auditor felt the presence ol the past almost as though it were brought visibly, tangibly into view*

Starting from this point he examined the tariff and free trade issnes.as now presented. His comparison of the two, should have been heard by every workingman, farmer and patriot of Indiana. Here was a man, who born poor, anda mechanic by trade, coming from the ranks of labor and standing befere a great audience as one 01 the most finished and effective orators of our time, was holding his fellow countrymen breathless and^ spell* hound with a power and a sincerity l.oru of truth, experience and conviction. He knew that he was right as the universal verdict voices popular

opinion—better than any man who has spoken for years past to our people. Reports of his speeches are daily given. It is almost wrong to try to put the man on paper. We strongly urge the citizens everywhere to go and see and hear him. A number of our Irish fellow citizens were out. It is needless to say they were most proud of an effort which recalls memories ofBurk for statesmanship, of Curran for wit and poetic eloquence and Henry Grattan in sincerity 9f conviction.

cleverness and abilily his effort was

hard to excelL His speech was a com*

plete history of the tariff controversy

from the foundation of thegovernment1 up to the present time. The doctor's logic clearly convinced every one that protection to home industry was the I true and only successful policy of this nation. It is useless to add the Democracy think the doctor is a very bad and mischevious individual.
