The crop of hay was large in this county this year, and the pnee is low. Good nay can be had for $6 and $7 per ton.

The news from the small-pox district southwest of Prairieton is to the effect that the disease continues to spread.

John Snack, a saloonkeeper of Macks ville, was fined $10 and costs in the circuit court, yesterday, for selling on Sunday.

The city has been buying screened travel of late for street repairs because "t was cheaper than taking it from the city's pit.

Tuesday night there were over forty prisoners in jail, about as many as can comfortably accommodated at that institution.

The prospects are that winter potatoes will command a good price. Farmers say that they will command 65 cents a bushel.

Meyers Bros, sold on Barnum's show day twenty one dozen Blaine and Cleveland caps, about two-thirds being Blaine cape.

A farmer thought some one had stolen a horse from him at tbe Bhow grounds Tuesday. He stormed around and was only quieted when the police found the horse where he left it

The river remains at a very low stage. This is pleasing to the many farmers who have good corn in the bottoms. A few weeks more of good weather, and the corn harvest will begin.

Tbecounty commissioners, it is un derstood, will grant the city permission to erect a shed at ttie rear of the jail under which to work prisoners. Such a place will be very convenient, and will lessen the chanceB of prisoners to escape.

The Shamrock base ball club of Indianapolis will play a local team at the park Sunday. The home nine will be as follow: Hendrich p. Snider c., Nelson 1st, Stump 2nd, Hurst s. s., Wolf 3rd, Hess r., Smith 1., Halbriter m.

There seems to be a great deal of complaint in regard to the gasoline lamps. Last month there were 244 re ported not lighted. The city

Supervising Architect Bell is adver Using for- sealed proposals for supplying and setting all stone werk and furnishing and laying all brick work for the basement and superstructure of the new government building. The drawings and specifications may be seen at the office of Superintendent Fitch.

The resolution of Councilman Poths in regard to the indexing of the records in the city clerk's office referred to records previous to 1873. The rec ords from 1853 to that year were never indexed. Many of them are the records filed in the loft of the city building. The city is badly in need of a vault for the preservation of records, as afire would make sad havoc.

At the last session of the council in September the police committee recommended that the horse used by the sanitary police be traded for a heavier animal, so as to be used as ex tra horse for the patrol wagon. Yesterday a trade was made with Dexter Higgins, of Bobinson, 111., $25 "boot" being given. The new animal is a good one, and will answer admirably for the use intended.

An Epidemic of Typhoid. An epidemic of typhoid fever has broken out at Marshall, Parke county. Five deaths have occurred, and twenty I cases are reported to the state health board. The reason is attributed to a foul pond near the I., B. & W. railway, and a citizens' committee has been appointed to appeal to the railway people to abate the nuisance.
